Vizio on screen keyboard

Vizio on screen keyboard DEFAULT

Your smart TV comes with an onscreen keyboard that you can control with your remote, and while it works okay when you’re searching for a show by title, it can be a hassle when you’re trying to find extended content. Being able to use your keyboard would make it easier if you could connect it.

How do you connect a keyboard to a smart tv? To connect a wireless or wired keyboard to a TV, plug in the keyboard into the TV’s USB port, and follow the onscreen steps, however, not all keyboards are compatible so make sure you read more on the subject before trying.

It is possible to use a keyboard with a smart TV, however, you may find it’s a little more difficult than you initially thought. Not all keyboards work with certain TVs, and there’s not always a USB passthrough. By reading through this article and understanding your keyboard better, you’ll learn what to do if you encounter any problems.

Why Would You Need to Connect a Keyboard to a TV?

Logitech K600 TV - TV Keyboard with Integrated Touchpad and D-Pad Compatible with Smart TV - Graphite Black

The primary reason why it makes sense to connect a keyboard to a TV is for convenience and efficiency, not unlike connecting your soundbar to your remote which we have a guide on here. It’s frustrating to use the keys on your remote to search for shows and browse websites because you have to scroll through every letter of the alphabet to choose the one you want.

It’s even worse if you want to type out a message to a friend or use your smart TV to compose an email. Your smart TV also comes with a web browser that can be difficult to operate with the TV’s remote control. When you connect a keyboard, you can type search commands, browse websites, and compose messages the same way you do on your laptop or PC.

Some Keyboards May Not Work on Certain TVs

TCL 40S325 40 Inch 1080p Smart LED Roku TV (2019)

Not all keyboards work with every TV, because manufacturer specifications do vary. Your keyboard may work perfectly with a Samsung Smart TV, for instance, the Samsung Q60 (on Amazon), but not with one from Sony. The same also applies to TVs; not all models allow you to connect a keyboard. If you were lucky enough to purchase a smart TV that came with a keyboard, you shouldn’t have any problems.

If you’re connecting a keyboard you already have, it’s best to refer to your user’s manual. There should be a listing of Smart TV models and other devices – (by the way, we have a list of some of the most popular smart devices to use) – that the keyboard is compatible with. You also want to read through your TV owner’s guide to find out which keyboard brands will work with the device.

In most cases, whether you’re using a wired or wireless keyboard, you should be able to connect it to your TV’s USB port. It is standard on most Smart TVs, though it is less common on Android models. Even if your Android TV has a USB port, the technology between the two devices might not be compatible.

There’s Likely No USB Passthrough

Regardless of whether you’re connecting a wired or wireless keyboard to a smart TV, there must be a USB port. If the TV does not have a USB port, you cannot try and bypass it by using an HDMI connection. The television will not recognize the connected device and you will still have to use the remote control to search and browse through content.

Obviously, the keyboard must be connected to the device it’s controlling and if you want to use it with the TV, it must be plugged into the television’s USB port. In the case where you want the keyboard hooked up to another device, you’ll have to disconnect it from the TV and plug it into that device’s port.

Sometimes, there can still be problems getting the TV to recognize the keyboard or vice-versa. If you’re using the USB port and everything is connected properly, it might be an issue with the setup steps. You may need to disconnect the keyboard and follow the onscreen prompts again.

Recommended Keyboards for TVs

Logitech K830 Illuminated Living-Room Keyboard with Built-in Touchpad – Easy-access Media Keys and Shortcut Keys for Windows or Android

If you don’t have a keyboard that is compatible with your TV there are some that are affordable and compatible with most televisions. Before you do purchase a new keyboard, you’ll want to decide between getting a wired or wireless one. Both will perform the same functions, the only difference is convenience.

A wired keyboard does need to remain close to the TV, while a wireless one will allow you to move around as long as you are still receiving the signal from the television. If you want to surf channels and browse the web from your couch, a wireless keyboard might be the best option.

Fosman Mini Bluetooth Keyboard

You’re not limited to only using this wireless keyboard with your TV, it also works with smartphones, PS4, and other devices. The Fosman Mini Bluetooth Keyboard (on Amazon) is lightweight and comfortable to use, even when you’re relaxing on the couch. Along with all of the keys you’d expect to find on a keyboard, it also comes with a touchpad for easy navigating.

It comes with a long-lasting battery, for instance, it can work for ten days before needing to be recharged. There’s also a handy LED light that indicates when battery power is running low. In addition to coming with a limited warranty, the keyboard is also backlit so you can use it in dark rooms.

Logitech K600 TV Keyboard

Compatible with most smart TVs, the Logitech K600 TV Keyboard (on Amazon) makes it easy to browse the web, scroll through entertainment content, and compose messages. Along with the standard keys, it also comes with a D-pad and touchpad so you won’t have any problems navigating the TV’s on-screen layout.

Media keys make it easy for you to stop, play, and pause movies. It will also allow you to switch which device it controls, as long as each one is connected to the same source. You only need to tap a button on the keyboard to switch from the TV to a laptop, or iOS device.

Conclusion

There’s no question that using your keyboard to scroll through content and navigate the web is easier than using the TV’s remote control, especially if you need to look for a specific movie or television show. Thankfully, they’re not overly difficult to connect either. Whether it’s a wired or wireless keyboard, you just need to have a TV with a USB port.

While there’s nothing wrong with using a wired keyboard, you do have to remain close to the TV. A wireless one does give you more freedom and is often compatible with other connected devices. Regardless of the model, including whether it’s wired or wireless, it’s going to be a lot easier than using the TV’s remote control.

How To: Use Your Smartphone as a Keyboard for Your Smart TV

With more digital content than ever, the search feature on smart TVs is essential. But typing is such a terrible experience when you're forced to use voice dictation or peck around with the remote control. Thankfully, there's a better way.

Most smart TVs support using your phone's keyboard as an input method. This makes it so much easier to enter your user name and password or just type in the name of an app or show. Even if your television doesn't include this feature, thanks to set-top boxes like Apple TV and Roku, you can add this functionality to any TV.

Need Vizio Smart TV Help - where's the keyboard so we can surf the web?

We have a Vizio smart tv, model D43-D2. It used to have a keyboard screen so you could surf the web. We never used it past the first couple of weeks. Now, we can't find it anywhere and neither could the internet/cable repair guy.

Yes, it is set up for wireless. Yes, I tested it and it's getting a good signal. All the silly pre-installed apps (yahoo, youtube, etc.) are working fine. But that isn't want I need. I need to find the keyboard (yes, slow going to type anything on the screen from the tiny remote) so we can get online.

Yes, I've looked at the manual but it doesn't mention a keyboard.

Once you go into the “Smart Hub” - wherever your Netflix, Amazon and Hulu apps are etc... there should be an icon for the Internet.

Navigate to and click on that. Then you should be able to see the keyboard or use your remote as the keyboard.

I’ve got a Vizio “smart TV”, but I’ve never connected it to the web, don’t see the need. We’ve got smartphones, and computers (plus an iPad), so I don’t see the need for it.

Following because I just bought a new Vizio Smart TV last week.

Walmart has a 70 inch 4K Vizio for $859.00 today, $500.00 less than I gave for a 1080p model couple years ago. Not complaining but it is beginning to show up dim bands on screen, guess LEDs are failing.

FWIW, I have found that I get higher quality picture on streaming video using the latest Roku device than through the smart TV hub. The latest Amazon Fire is not quite as good as the Roku, but is better than the TV hub. Of course all connect to the same content, including YouTube, Netflix, Prime, and the internet.

Four years back, we bought 3 Vizio 55” Smart TVs over the course of a week. All had trouble connecting to our WiFi...all continuously locked up. Salesperson said our house was haunted. Returned all of them, bought a Samsung dumb TV...never looked back. Did hookup Prime and it rocks.

How to Enable or Disable the Onscreen Keyboard in Windows 10/7/8

Nowadays, HDTVs are becoming more and more popular. And if your choice is Vizio, you probably want to get the most out of it.

How to Change Input on a Vizio TV

Using additional audio and video devices can enhance your HDTV experience by improving the sound or by offering you a wide variety of content to enjoy on your Vizio TV.

Whether you want to connect a Roku device to watch the latest movie hits, or play games on your PS4, you need to know how to set the inputs for them to work properly.

Changing the Input on Your Vizio TV

There are two simple ways to change the input source on your Vizio TV. This is a necessary step to complete if you want to connect and use different devices with your HDTV.

If you want to change the input using your remote and the Input menu, this is what you should do:

  1. Look for the INPUT button on the remote. It’s in the top left corner.
    How to Change Input
  2. Press the button and wait for the Input menu to open on the screen.
  3. Use the arrow buttons (Up and Down) to select the input you want to use.
  4. Press OK to confirm your choice.
  5. The input is now changed.

The other way is to simply use the button at the back side of your TV. The button is in the bottom right corner. Pressing it changes the input source. Make sure you don’t hold it because this is how you turn your TV off or on.

Note that you are able to change the input names to recognize them more easily. This is how:

  1. Look for the MENU button on your remote and wait for the on-screen menu to appear.
  2. Use arrows to navigate and select Devices.
  3. From the Devices menu, choose the input you want to rename. Press OK.
  4. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter a new name for the input.
  5. Select OK and press OK on the remote.
  6. When you’re done, press EXIT on your remote.

Volume and Image Changes

After you change the input source, some other changes might follow.

For example, the volume or the display image can change as well. This happens because your smart TV remembers the settings for each input individually. If the volume or the aspect ratio are too different, you may want to adjust them.

As for the volume, it’s pretty simple – just use the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons to adjust the sound to the new input source.

If the screen aspect ratio is no longer appropriate when you change the input source, do the following to adjust it:

  1. Find the WIDE button on your remote and press it.
  2. You will see a number of options so use the arrow buttons to select the one that suits you. Note that not all the options are available all the time. For example, you can select the Stretch mode only if you’re watching a 720p/1080i source.
    How to Change Input

What Devices Can You Use the Vizio TV with?

Vizio smart TVs are compatible with most devices, such as Roku sticks or gaming consoles. But before you try to connect them, make sure they have matching ports.

The best way to connect any device is to use an HDMI cable. It allows you to stream HD audio and video content on your Vizio TV. Both the image and the sound transmitted this way are clear and in most cases automatically adjust to your TV’s properties to maximize the enjoyment.

Vizio TV Change Input

You should establish the connection while both your TV and the other device are turned off. When you’re done setting the cable, turn the Vizio and the device on.

When using another device to stream on your Vizio TV, make sure that the input source is set to HDMI.

Exploring the Possibilities

Knowing how to change the input is a necessary condition for pairing your Vizio TV with different devices. This gives you a chance to explore numerous possibilities when it comes to watching high-quality content on your TV and enjoying it to the full. All you need is a compatible device and an HDMI cable.

Does anyone at Vizio use this app?

Okay, I like the concept of the way this works. I love technology and I am all about reducing the number of things I need to carry and keep track of in life. Very forward-thinking. However, why do I have to go through so many steps when I open the app to get to the spot I need to turn on the TV and sound bar??? Opening the app should default to the TV controls, not to the “discover” section. You have to open the app, click on “control”, then click in the upper right hand corner on devices, wait for your devices to load up, then choose the device, then wait for the buttons to load up (when it works right). Not a smooth process....especially for tech in 2019. I could lose my remote, find it, and turn on the TV in the same amount of time it takes me to use this app. Overall, disappointed, and my next TV will not be a Vizio SmartCast unless this is improved. Customer service seems to think this is a non-issue...maybe this review will inspire some change for a more streamlined process?? Please?!??

Hello Zach2992, thank you for your feedback on the application it is appreciated.

Update believed to screw tv up

I had bought a vizio 65” E-series 4K smart tv 2years old and for some reason as soon as the update was pushed out the tv started to power on and off by itself never had any problem till now didn’t buy the extended warranty because I have 2 other vizio TVs that are 8-9 years old never had any issues with them. I believe they are getting ahead of there selves with there software updates. Until today I was nothing but vizio, Now not so sure unless they prove there selfs to take care of loyal customers like me! I called vizio and they said there was nothing they can do for me so there is nothing I can do for you but let other people know what I’m dealing with after spending a lot of money on your brand all these years!!! And still I went and bought the 2018 version with a 4 year warranty because that’s how loyal I am another 800 so if something happens I will never ever buy a vizio tv again we’ll see how it goes this time please know what your doing with these updates before you push them out! Also it’s Christmas and I have 3 kids so this is a really bad time for me! I thinking twice about giving you another chance and taking this new one back and going with someone else!

Please urgently fix!!!!

Latest update broke the pairing cannot pair same problems as all other latest reviews

Update: just now (about 5 min from writing this review) I decided to use my old iPod running iOS 9 and my iPhone 5s running iOS 10 and download the Vizio app which of course is not supported until you go to your purchase history and download it there. It then asked me if I wanted to instal most recent version compatible to the device. BAM it worked perfect in fact as soon as i opened the app it instantly worked better than it ever has and recognized device instantly. So clearly this latest update is to blame.

Response to developer: My issue? I stated my issue and it’s exactly the same as all the tons of latest reviews…. Your latest update broke the connection and communication with app and soundbar. Meanwhile, previous version immediately connects and works without issue. And yes I’ve reset, removed device on app, attempted re establishing connection, I’ve tried everything possible and no go. I’ve looked at your responses at “solutions” on other reviews and it seems they are all the same a typical cut and copy response to everyone telling you that latest update broke the connection and communication. It’s not an issue with soundbar or network otherwise previous app version wouldn’t connect instantly and work like a charm. But rather, with this latest version of the app you get a message indicating unable to connect.

I'm sorry that our app wasn't working as you expected. We'd love to hear more about what problems you were having so that we can work on adding features- and suggest steps to fix any issue that you were experiencing.

On Screen Keyboard In Windows 10 and Changing the Keyboard Language

Virtual Keyboard

webOS TV includes an on-screen virtual keyboard. The virtual keyboard has the following characteristics:

  • Transitions from the bottom of the screen

  • Covers 100% of the screen width

  • Covers 1/3 of the screen height

  • Be able to accommodate up to 58 language-specific keys.

The virtual keyboard supports various layouts:

  • Standard QWERTY

  • Alpha-numeric

  • Standard numeric with numbers 0-9

  • Standard numeric with alternate characters  %, +, etc

Virtual keyboard image that shows the layout

  1. Left column keys: Fixed width, non-language specific, affects keyboard layout and content.

  2. Right column keys: Fixed width, non-language-specific, affects the active text box.

  3. Center column keys: Varying width, 15 x 4 character keys, language-specific characters.

The virtual keyboard is the primary text input method for webOS TV apps, and you can customize the virtual keyboard for specific input types. For example, if you are asking your user for an email address or a URL, you can provide the keyboard that includes special characters for such purpose (e.g., @, full stop, and others). Similarly, if the user needs to type numbers, the standard numeric type can be provided. If you do not specify the input type, your user will be presented with a standard keyboard layout.

When an input field is focused, the virtual keyboard is automatically loaded. However, if the system detects a keypress from a USB keyboard, the virtual keyboard disappears from the screen. To relaunch the virtual keyboard, you need to select an input field with a remote controller.

The virtual keyboard is always enabled and cannot be disabled; When an input field is focused, the virtual keyboard appears on the screen at all times.

Standard Virtual Keyboard Layout Transition

Input Type

The virtual keyboard is automatically invoked as one of the following types when an input field is active.

  • text
    Text type of virtual keyboard

  • number
    Number type of virtual keyboard

  • url

  • URL type of virtual keyboard

To use a virtual keyboard in a general web app, set the input type attribute in HTML below. Depending on the input type, a specific type of virtual keyboard will appear.

<form> <input type = "url" ...> </form>

View Area

If the active text field is above the virtual keyboard area when selected, the virtual keyboard's transition on the screen does not shift the content below.

If the text input field of a web app is in the lower section of the screen, it will be moved up when the virtual keyboard is displayed. The web app is not resized, but the app content is moved up to allow the text input field to be visible for users to enter content.

All text fields must be followed by a space with a minimum of 1/3 screen height to accommodate the virtual keyboard without being obscured.

The area that is shown the text field and the virtual keyboard on the screen

Virtual Keyboard Language Switching

webOS TV enables users to select up to five languages, including the current locale language for the virtual keyboard in the webOS TV Settings.

The language button of the virtual keyboard

When the user selects the language button, the virtual keyboard switches between the languages specified in the webOS TV Settings app.

webOS TV handles the language switch, as a web developer, you do not need to write any code in your app to support such behavior. In fact, apps cannot specify the language of the virtual keyboard. webOS TV will display a virtual keyboard based on the language users have specified using the language button on the virtual keyboard.

For how to use the virtual keyboard, refer to the Virtual Keyboard sample.

Secure Input

You can define whether to show or hide the characters the user enters. For example, if a user needs to input characters masked like a password or sensitive information, you can provide secure input.

The following code is a sample of secure input for a general web app.

<form> <input type = "password", ...> </form>
