We’re open and excited to welcome you back for a much-needed escape along the Colorado River, without restrictions involving capacity limits and large gatherings.

In an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Laughlin, the State of Nevada has mandated that everyone, including fully vaccinated individuals, wear a mask in public indoor settings, including resorts and casinos, restaurants, bars, showrooms and meeting spaces. The directive aligns with the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance related to mask requirements.

As of Aug. 16, alllarge indoor events with 4,000 or more attendees are able to show proof of vaccination as an exception to the indoor mask requirement. Individual event organizers are able to choose between requiring masks indoors for all attendees or ensuring that all attendees are vaccinated (in which case they can remove their masks). Event operators may admit attendees who are only partially vaccinated, however attendees who are only partially vaccinated MUST continue to wear a mask during the event. This is not a requirement to show proof of vaccination to attend a large event, it is an optional exception should vendors choose.

Masks are also still required on all public transportation and transportation hubs per CDC guidance.

Those planning to visit Laughlin should regularly check this page as well as Nevada Health Response for updates on state and county requirement changes.  Many of the destination’s resorts have put together a thorough health and wellness plan based on the advice of health and government officials. Below you can find a link to those plans.

Like Las Vegas and Southern California, the gambling destination of Laughlin, Nevada, was hit hard by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Casinos in the Colorado River-adjacent city shuttered for months in the early part of the pandemic and long-term projects that the casinos and other businesses started were put on the back burner.

But those businesses are hoping that 2021 will be the year that they can either resume or complete those projects. Here’s a look at what’s coming to two casinos and a river tour company in the near future.

Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino

The casino resort property that was started by Don Laughlin, (which is where the city of Laughlin draws its name), has grown immensely since opening in 1966.

The resort started a $22 million hotel room renovation of its 1,350 rooms in spring 2020. Even as the casino closed last March for 77 days, it tried to continue the upgrades in the hopes of finishing ahead of schedule, Matt Laughlin, chief operating officer for the resort, said in an email.

However, the pandemic affected many companies the resort that provided items such as furniture and carpet, so speeding up the timeline did not work as planned Laughlin wrote.

He said the resort is on schedule to complete its hotel renovation in April 2021 and that the every room has been “practically gutted,” with wallpaper and popcorn ceilings removed and new texture and paint on walls. The rooms will have new carpet, new furniture, new mattresses, new pillows, new linens, new artwork, new TVs and new refrigerators in every room.

The resort also plans to install new elevators and escalators by July 2021.

The New Pioneer Casino and Hotel

The New Pioneer Casino and Hotel has renovations for its hotel rooms and a makeover of its grand ballroom is in the works.

General Manager Jason Adimoolah said the casino recently finished renovating the rooms in one building and will be complete with furniture in about a month. Rooms will have new desks, dressers, nightstands and wall-mounted 40-inch TVs.

Casino officials planned to move from that to renovating the casino’s grand ballroom followed by the rooms in the two remaining buildings, but those projects are on hold for now due to coronavirus restrictions that limit capacity to about 25% in Laughlin’s casinos, Adimoolah said.

“Until that’s lifted and until we can have large gatherings of at least 250 people again is when we are going to pick it back up,” he said.

Adimoolah said the plan for the ballroom is to give it a facelift with updated walls, flooring and ceiling tiles and decor to reflect the surrounding area.

“The design element is going to match our region that we’re in,” Adimoolah said. “It’s going to feel light, bright; it’s going to match the desert and the mountains and the river.”

Adimoolah said The New Pioneer is hopeful that restrictions will ease in a month or two and that as soon as they do, renovations will resume.

Laughlin River Tours

Laughlin River Tours, which docks at the Aquarius Casino Resort and offers cocktail, dinner and scenic cruises and special events, plans to replace its aging steam boat replica, Celebration, with a new $2 million-plus yacht, said Brea Chiodini, who owns the tour company with her husband.

Chiodini said Celebration, which has been in operation for roughly three decades, was getting older and reaching the point where it would need to be decommissioned.

While Celebration was 64 feet long and able to fit about 112 passengers, the yacht will be 90 feet long and able to fit 149 passengers.

The kitchen space in the new boat will allow for more dining on board.

“Our galley is going to be triple the size of what’s existing with double the equipment so we’ll be able to serve dinner to 80 people over just 50,” Chiodini  said.

Chiodini said that though initially the plan was to have the boat completed in the first quarter of 2021, but that’s been somewhat delayed due to the pandemic.

“We’re hoping around April or May we should be done and have the boat here ready to go in the water,” she said.

Plan Your Trip to Laughlin

Comfortable accommodations, exciting attractions, riveting entertainment and adventurous day trips are just a few reasons Laughlin is a great getaway.

LAUGHLIN, Nev. – Laughlin, Nevada is scheduled to make a comeback next week with a planned Thursday, June 4 opening.

“Laughlin has long been a popular destination for summer getaways to take in watersports on the Colorado River and the excitement of the casinos,” said Sean Hammond, vice president and general manager of Laughlin’s popular Aquarius and Edgewater casino venues. “We look forward to reopening in time for people to enjoy their trips to Laughlin while providing a safe, healthy atmosphere.”

According to Hammond, the crisis has had a significant impact on the organization’s first-quarter revenues, and with a total loss of earnings during the months of April and May, the crisis will be reflected in the casinos’ earnings for 2020.

“Every destination is a little different,” Hammond said. “Las Vegas isn’t as reliant on gaming as an industry (as Laughlin is), with its other businesses and entertainment. But when you look across the board, I think the crisis has had a negative impact for everyone.”

According to casino officials, the reopening will come with discounts as much as 45% on hotel reservations at the casinos as customers make their return in June. Under order from Nevada authorities, those hotels will be limited to 50% capacity to mitigate the potential spread of coronavirus infection.

The Aquarius, Edgewater and other casinos owned by Golden Entertainment, Inc, announced that broad safety measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of employees and patrons during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Enhanced sanitation protocols will be adopted at each location’s casino floors, restaurants, bars, elevators and hotel rooms.

“It won’t be a normal casino operation, as it was before,” Hammond said. “But we’re slowly easing into the new normal, as far as what the Nevada Gaming Control Board will allow, and what customers are willing to accept. I’m optimistic. I know there’s a lot of doom and gloom out there, but people want to get back.”

According to Golden Entertainment, some areas of the Aquarius and Edgewater facilities will be closed during the initial reopening phase, but most of those locations’ restaurants and casino floors will reopen next week.

“The entire country has never been shut down for anything like this in its history, and people are done with it,” Hammond said. “There’s a growing demand. We’ll have to be smart, and we’ll have to be careful, but things should get back to a new normal.”
