One-Fourth of KISS

wordplay, the crossword column

Robyn Weintraub turns our T.G.I.F. into T.G.I.W.

FRIDAY PUZZLE — It is always a pleasure to open a puzzle and see Robyn Weintraub’s byline. She sets such a high bar for herself and, by extension, for other constructors. Her puzzles contain little to no junk, lots of terrific entries and very clever cluing.

In this puzzle alone, Ms. Weintraub debuts CASE DISMISSED, LET THAT SINK IN, POKER CHIP, EATING FOR TWO and LEFT TOWN. That’s a lively puzzle, and as a wise person once said, wait — there’s more. She has brought back GENERATION GAP and EXPRESS TRAIN. Her grid contains NAIL POLISH, GO ON STRIKE, TAKES A SIP, HORSEMEN and ON ONE HAND.

A grid like this is reason enough to try a Friday puzzle. Go for it. I had a bit of trouble in the southeast, but it wasn’t enough to make me stop solving. Did you encounter any speed bumps in Ms. Weintraub’s puzzle? Let me know in the comments.

Tricky Clues

10A. The “Calendar heading named for a Norse deity: Abbr.” is Thursday, or THU, and is named for Thor.

16A. This is a great clue. “Digital color presentation?” calls to mind a Technicolor livestream or perhaps a particularly vibrant presentation, but that’s not where this is going. In this clue, “digital” refers to our fingers, and the color is NAIL POLISH.

18A. Speaking of fingers, the vegetable also known as “lady fingers” is OKRA. If you say so. Frankly, I don’t see the resemblance.

20A. The colon or semicolon in an emoji represents the EYES in a face. A colon signifies two open EYES, and a semicolon signifies a wink.

33A. This is a very clever way to bring back a phrase that has not appeared in the New York Times Crossword since 1979. A GENERATION GAP “might be found between X and Z”: Shout out to all millennials, also known as Generation Y.

35A. Let’s play “What Else Could It Mean?” The phrase “class cut-ups” can mean class clowns, but it may also refer to medical students, who actually do some cutting. The abbreviated course subject is ANAT, short for “anatomy.”

37A. We would like to issue a pre-emptive apology to the members of the rock group Kiss, on the small chance that this clue appears to be calling them stupid. The clue “One-fourth of KISS” really refers to the idiom “Keep It Simple, STUPID.” No, I’m not calling you stupid either.

44A. Please do not feed your cats POKER CHIPs. The clue “Kitty food?” refers to putting money into the “kitty,” or anteing up before a round of poker.

47A. Such an elegantly misdirected clue. “It covers a lot of ground” could mean that something goes into great detail, but don’t overthink this one. The answer is SOIL.

54A. I can hear you asking whether it’s appropriate for “They’re full of opinions” and its answer, OPEDS, to use the same word — but they don’t. The “op” in OPEDS does not stand for “opinion”; it stands for “opposite.” OPEDS were named for being opposite the editorial page.

12D. The U.S.A. was not part of the League of Nations for these reasons.

20D. EATING FOR TWO makes its New York Times Crossword debut. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to find out from my obstetrician that this was a falsehood. My babies did not need the same amount of nutrition that I did while carrying them.

25D. This may or may not be a commentary on royal marriages, but I’m going to take a wild guess here and say that a “problem for a king” is MATE because of the checkmate move.

Constructor Notes

A few things of interest in this puzzle (at least to me …). Clues for 28-Across and 12-Down are new knowledge I obtained while sharpening my trivia skills in the past few years. I find more and more that if I can’t come up with a clever misdirect or punny clue, my next preference will be to find some interesting bit of trivia.

Over the last decade, I debuted both POKER TABLE and POKER TABLES in the New York Times Crossword. Today I add POKER CHIP to my collection. One might think that I actually played poker for all the times I’ve introduced references to that card game.

And speaking of card games I don’t play, the clue to 31-Down clearly isn’t mine. In my 2018 constructor profile, I was asked about entries I’d never put in a puzzle, to which I responded, “I recently removed a common five-letter word used in the card game bridge.” Whether it’s a reference to bridge or SKAT, or anything else, I wouldn’t put it in my grid and I wouldn’t put it in my clues. Fortunately, this term never shows up in my game of choice, mahjong!

Happy solving!

#FunFact

This week’s #FunFact is in honor of “Squid Game”: SQUID has appeared in the daily Crossword six times in the Shortz era, clued as “Ika, at a sushi bar,” “Tentacled sea creature” and the devious “Ink dispenser.” GAME has appeared 63 times, and its clues have included “Up (or down) for something,” “Deer and fox, e.g.” and “Go, for one.”

Can no longer make in APP purchases

Now when I try to do a purchase there is no confirm button on the bottom half of the screen. On the top half on the right side it says double click to confirm. This banner is slightly moving but the item I am supposed to double click never appears on the screen. I have an iPhone X and have recently purchased Midi puzzles but now I can no longer purchase. I also looked at a annual subscription but the same screen issues.

Good News. I ended up googling my question and found the answer. That double click message: on the X phone on the upper right side there is a button one can push. So when it said to double click that’s the button they want you to push. So I ended up purchasing an annual subscription. Thought I’d have access to all the $2 - $4 Midi puzzles but that’s not the case. Of course you get access to the big Daily puzzle. But for the Midi’s you have to pay extra as if you had no subscription. BUT I do have access to the Midi archives and thus I have access to 28-31 puzzles for every month of archive.

You got a 5 star rating from me on my initial review when I was having technical problems. So no need to update that.

Hey cardsharky - please contact us via the Feedback button in the app so we can try to recreate your experience. Also be sure to update to the latest version of the app which supports iPhone X. Thanks for the feedback!

NY Times online crossword puzzle app

For $2 or $3, you get access to the archive of the daily puzzle in addition to all the Monday through Sunday puzzles as they come out. A gold star is available
for each new puzzle that you complete on the day of its issue. It’s an addictive feature that has kept me completing the puzzles each day now for the past two months and counting. Other collections of themed puzzles are available for nominal fees. The included archive alone looks to be enough to keep me occupied for several years to come, at least. These are fun puzzles to experiment with, since the technology allows for rapid, easy letter replacement. I frequently go with my gut on difficult and obscure answers, sometimes finding them surprisingly correct, sometimes transforming entire puzzle quadrants from one set of answers to a largely different set. The letter replacement feature makes this app a clear favorite over the old pen and paper technique. I use the app each day and highly recommend it.

Good puzzles and app, subscription terms are a bold-faced lie

I bought a subscription for the puzzles in the app, under the impression that the subscription works on the website as well for use on my MacBook. Where did I get that impression? Directly on the sign-up page in the app, where it states that this is possible. There is even a step-by-step guide on the NYT website on how to access your iTunes subscription by linking your account. When I did this, however, I discovered that it does not transfer any information at all to the web. I talked to a NYT customer service rep and was told that this is not possible, and the website just hasn’t been “updated” to remove the false information. So you pay 4 cents more a month for the iTunes subscription to get LESS access across your devices, and when you ask NYT about it, they tell you that it was never possible and claim that it’s Apple’s fault that the instructions it provides on its website are completely false. Needless to say, I will be getting a refund on my subscription and I doubt I will ever give it any more time or money. A real shame, as I love the daily puzzles and think the app has one of the better faces among the many crossword apps available. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE WITHIN THE APP IF YOU WANT TO USE THIS ON OTHER DEVICES.
