How to set pressure sensitivity in GIMP to control line thickness?

RE: Tablet not showing up in input devices Hi....Information from

Then I follow is work. But.. I Use Windows 10 my Gimp 2.6.9 Follow Below :

All, I know this is a bit outdated (the last post was in October), but I've stumbled on a different, although more troublesome, way to enable pressure sensitivity in GIMP 2.8:

  1. Plug tablet in.
  2. Launch 2.6 (in this case I was using 2.6.12)
  3. Go to File > Preferences > Input Devices > Configure Extended Input Devices... a. If you get an error saying no input devices found, close 2.6 and relaunch.
  4. Draw something on the canvas using the tablet.
  5. Close 2.6
  6. Launch 2.8

You should now be able to draw in 2.8 with full pressure sensitivity. I'm not sure why this works, but I've tried it, rebooted my computer and tried it again with success. I am using Windows 8, but I believe it should work on all versions of Windows. Because OSX used X11 for 2.6, but not for 2.8 I'm unsure if this process would work.

Using Ubuntu 12.04 I was able to get 2.8 to handle pressure sensitivity right out of the box--but it could have been because I had just launched & closed 2.6 and had both installed side-by-side.

Like I said, this is a bit more cumbersome than the solution 2blackbar suggested above but I figured it was worth sharing. Last edited by BnBGobo99; 28-May-13 at 15:13. Reason: Workflow was unnecessary.

How to make Gimp brush size pressure sensitive?

"Assets" that come with Gimp (brushes, gradients, patterns... and brush dynamics) and not editable by users (because they are assumed to be shared between users).

If you need to edit brush dynamics, you have to create them in your user assets, either by creating a new one from scratch in the Dynamics editor, or by copying an existing one (the copy will implicitly go in your own user assets). Use the Dynamics list dialog for this (Windows>Dockable dialogs>Paint Dynamics).

But the Dynamics you want already exists as .

Note: when you start using Gimp with a tablet, the first thing to do is to open Windows>Dockable dialog>Device status. If this only lists a single device (likely "Core pointer") then your tablet isn't seen like a tablet and you won't get pressure sensitivity.

wacom tablet not pressure sensitive in gimp

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I have a Wacom intuos 2 that works fine in photoshop but brush opacity doesn't change at all with pressure in gimp. In preferences, the pen and eraser show up as installed. How do I tell gimp to have a brush change opacity with pressure etc?

Did you click the little button at the bottom of the dynamics with the little pencil, edit dynamics? You might be able to set up your pressure and opacity there.

You have to configured your tablet using, Edit>Preferences>Input Devices>Configure Extended Input Devices>Configure Input Devices, and set the "Mode" to "Screen".

Once this is done.
You need to set the "Brush Dynamics" to "Basic Dynamics". "Pressure Opacity" should also work, as long as the configuration "Mode" is set to "Screen". As seen in the image above.
This should allow you to use your "Pressure Stylus/Wacom" as it's intended.

the brush is set to basic dynamics and mode is screen . but edit dynamics is grayed out . And the eraser end on the pen is working as a brush. any ideas?

I'm not sure why this is so, but my Gimp also has grayed-out brush dynamics. I'm thinking that if the pen-tablet is used, this may be why the brush-dynamics are grayed-out.
I use my mouse most of the time and don't use brush-dynamics with the mouse.

Ok, I opened Gimp. I clicked the Dynamics button. The first five down from the top are not grayed out, whether I use the mouse or the pen. All the ones from basic dynamics down to the bottom are grayed out. Strange or what.

Yes...
I'm not sure whats going on, but when I need to use my Wacom tablet all works well, and when I use my mouse everything's okay for me, with the dynamics turned off.
So I'm not sure what to do about this issue.

I am talking about the dynamics editor, Everything works fine for me except most of the editor except the top five are grayed out.
