Walmart order pickup

Walmart’s grocery pickup is free, but how is the service?

Walmart Black Friday

According to the Time Use Institute, the average grocery shopping trip takes 41 minutes. But this varies dramatically based on factors, like the day and time you visit the store and the number of items in your grocery basket. Services like Instacart and Walmart Grocery make it so you can avoid grocery shopping in a brick-and-mortar store by doing your shopping online via an app or website.

Walmart Grocery offers delivery, pickup, or both options, depending on the market where you live. Walmart’s grocery pickup service is free to use, which makes it rather attractive for those looking to save money and time meandering around a crowded grocery store. All you do is drive up to the store, get your groceries loaded by employees, and leave.

We decided to give Walmart’s grocery pickup service a try. Looking at factors like the quality of the groceries when compared to an in-store grocery trip, customer service, cost, and time savings, we aimed to find out if the service is as great as it sounds.

Ordering groceries on the app

Overall rating: good

We used the Walmart Grocery app to place our order, and found it to be, for the most part, user friendly and easy to navigate. To locate an item, you simply type it into the search box, and a variety of selections appear on the screen. It should be noted that some items require more extensive searching than others. For instance, it was more difficult to find specific brands of gluten-free items, even when typing the exact name and brand of the item into the search box. For some items, we had to try a few different searches like “gluten free granola bars,” “Annies gluten free,” and “gluten free Annies” to get the item we were looking for.

Our grocery order was substantial; the total for our order was $547.57, but this got us a lot of groceries (enough to feed a family of six for at least two weeks). We ordered a variety of items, ranging from produce and meats to foods for those with dietary restrictions (gluten free and lactose free). The available food selection was impressive, and ordering groceries via the app was relatively painless. It took us 58 minutes to input our order. However, you could input a smaller order in a few minutes (the app indicated the minimum order amount was $30).

You can reserve your pickup time in one-hour intervals either before or after you make your grocery selections. If you reserve your time beforehand, the app tells you a time period, and you have to check out to keep that time slot. Depending on when you order, there may be time slots available on the same day. There were no available time slots on the same day we were ordering, but there were many the following day and each day after. We selected 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the following day.

During checkout, you also indicate whether or not it’s OK for the store to make “substitutions.” This means, if the store is out of an item on your list, they can substitute it for a similar item. We marked no substitutions for our “dietary restriction” foods, but allowed substitutions for the remainder of our items.

Picking up groceries

Overall rating: fair

Our order was ready at approximately 2:15 p.m., which was right on time. An app alerted us and we also received an email that our items were ready. The email and the app instructed us to check in when we were on our way by pressing a button in the email or app notification. We checked in and headed to the store to pick up our order shortly thereafter.

When we arrived, we parked in the designated pickup area on the side of the Walmart store. The app told us it knew we were at the store, but we had to wait 18 minutes for someone to come out and greet us. The staff was friendly, but they didn’t say much to us. Overall, it took 33 minutes from the time we parked to the time we drove away with our groceries. According to the Walmart Grocery website, the associates cannot accept tips for pickup orders.

Grocery quality

Overall rating: fair

Upon unloading our order, we found out they had made several substitutions. Some of the substitutions made sense, like swapping different brand names, while others were a bit strange, like giving us fresh cauliflower instead of the fresh broccoli we ordered.

The produce and fresh food looked decent overall. The bananas were not overripe, the potatoes were fresh, and the green peppers weren’t damaged or dented. Two of our items were damaged, though. Our lactose-free milk was dented, and our leaf lettuce was badly wilted. One of our items — split chicken breast — was expiring the following day, but no items were past their expiration date.

Twelve items were missing from our grocery order. When we looked at the receipt, we noticed they did not charge us for two of the items, but they did charge us for the remaining 10 missing items — that’s $31.48 in groceries we were charged for.

Customer service

Overall rating: poor

We contacted the phone number provided in the email regarding the missing groceries, but getting the problem corrected was very difficult. It took us 10 calls back and forth to the Walmart store where we ordered to correct the issue. The store associates did not argue with us or deny the groceries were missing, but they sounded like they were too busy to handle the problem. We were asked to call back several times, or an associate would ask if they could call us back in five minutes and then 20 minutes would go by with no return call.

The associate hung up on us on two different occasions (we are unsure if this was an accident or not). The additional phone calls back and forth took us a total of 71 minutes from the first time we called to the time we had a resolution. To get the missing groceries, we had to make another trip to the same Walmart store to pick them up. On our second trip, the associate was friendly, but this time it took an additional 20 minutes for associates to bring the missing groceries to the pickup area.

So, is Walmart Grocery Pickup as convenient as it sounds?

When we added up the time it took to place our order, make two separate trips to Walmart, and make phone calls to correct the problems with our order, it took slightly more than three hours to complete the process. That seems like a lot of work, although hopefully not everyone will have to make a second trip to the store for missing goods.

Verdict? If you’re buying a large amount of groceries or you have very specific dietary needs, you may be better off going to a grocery store and purchasing your groceries or using another service.

This is not to say this service isn’t useful. With a few kinks worked out, this service could be valuable. For those with smaller grocery orders, the service may be a time saver.  So, is Walmart Grocery Pickup as great as it’s cracked up to be? That depends on what you value. You probably won’t get the same quality of groceries as you would if you were to search for the best dates on meats and the best looking produce when you pick them out yourself. You may not save a ton of time. But, this service does allow you to look in your fridge and pantry while you shop, preventing excess or impulse purchases. It also prevents having to actually grocery shop yourself, and to some people that’s priceless.

Editors’ Notes

Walmart’s app lets you browse thousands of products, search for items that have recently gone on sale and even refill your prescriptions. But the savings catcher is pure genius: scan a receipt for any purchase made in the last seven days, and if a competitor in your area is advertising a lower price, Walmart automatically gives you the difference. It’s a fantastic, hassle-free way to save money without the need to shop around.

Walmart App has made my life easier

So far my experience with this app has been the greatest. It’s so helpful, Fast, Accurate, It’s extremely orthodox easy to use, and navigate. No I’m not a paid customer. Just a satisfied customer. I Like the layout of the app. I love the scan & go setting. I adore Walmart pay for when I forget my wallet. I also love my delivery services that I pay for through my Walmart plus membership. They deliver right to my door step. I have become an avid shopper, more keen to my likes & dislikes because of this apps. If you never used to save your receipts, you should start filing them with this app, it will amaze you how much you can learn about yourself. I’ve learned how unhealthy we were eating. How much Sugar your consuming, how much alcohol we were purchasing. It teaches you how many unnecessary things you buy. Little by little you start to adjust your spending, as well as the way you view quality in products. Cheaper isnt always safest & expensive isn’t always better. I said before and I’ll say it again Walmart app has really helped me enhance my shopping experiences. I have nothing bad to say about it. The time I did have something to complain about, they fixed it right away ( I complained once of Safeway delivering alcohol through their delivery services while Walmart plus wasn’t doing so costing money).
Thanks Walmart app. I hope the technicians continue on bettering this app.

Together when apart

We have loved this service and app since the pandemic. Our family ended up being separated by three states when the COVID seized the nation. My husband and I had “dates” on the phone ordering his groceries. We would discuss his meals for the week including his lunches for work, I’d add what he needed into the cart through the app then I would place the order for him to pick up at the Walmart around the corner from our home in Wyoming where he was at. I would always add something special and extra; his favorite dessert, a snack I thought he like for his lunch. Then after he’s pick up his order, which was always easy quick and simple at our Laramie Wy Walmart, he’d call to tell me what he got elated by the special items I’d thrown in he didn’t know about.
It was so easy I’ve done it now for my kids too for those holidays we couldn’t be together I’d buy them a meal. When they were feeling down and I thought they could use a banana split night with friends I’d order up all the makings and have them pick up their order at their local Walmart. And never ever a problem with ordering or picking up ( outside of shortages during hoarding but that wasn’t a flaw in your system just our nations mentality)
Thank you Walmart for making it easy to continue loving my family through food even when I can’t be there next to them.

Walmart Grocery Pickup - How Does Pickup Work and Tips

Walmart Online Grocery Rebranded to Online Pickup & Delivery “OPD”

A quick update on Online Grocery’s rebrand to Online Pickup & Delivery

From Online Grocery to Online Pickup & Delivery

Walmart Online Pickup & Delivery or “OPD” recently replaced “Walmart Online Grocery” to reflect the efforts Walmart is making to rapidly adapt to the marketplace by investing in omnichannel technology. These changes aim to streamline the user’s experience on the Walmart app, and more accurately describe the breadth ofofferings. This rebrand is a result of integrating the Grocery Pickup app (orange) and app (blue) into one platform.

The updated “Walmart app” allows users to pick which hallway they’d like to shop in, offers more availability for pickup and delivery and each section has a similar interface in which the user navigates. This was planned to roll out later this year, but the release was moved up in order to capture the surge of new adopters from quarantine conditions. The combined experience encourages new users that might be used to shopping in one app, to explore also shopping in the other.

Grocery Pick Up (old orange app) is now referred to as Online Pickup and Delivery

Walmart has utilized a few different names for their pickup service since launch, as they’ve updated the capabilities and offerings within the platform.

  • Early 2019: Online Grocery Pickup (OGP)
  • Late 2019 Online Grocery (OG)
  • June 2020: Online Pickup and Delivery (OPD)

The most recent change to Online Pickup & Delivery was made in order to distance the service from being identified as solely for groceries/food and emphasize the diversity of products available for pickup and delivery with Walmart. For a while now, products from many departments beyond groceries have been offered on the Walmart Grocery app – but this change in name and language further emphasizes this. This is important for Walmart to boost profitability on the app. Going forward, if your product is in Walmart’s modular, it’s available for pickup.

Differentiating between Online Pickup & Delivery (OPD) and Pick Up Today (PUT) for Brands

PUT is declining as Walmart is pushing towards OPD. For brands, OPD sales and PUT sales are NOT the same, they are separate for P&L at this time.

Walmart on Monday said it's added a new pickup option to make returning online orders less of a hassle. The service, Carrier Pickup by FedEx, lets people return items without having to leave their home, Walmart said in a blog post.

Holiday shopping has looked different for many people in 2020 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Many stores opted to skip traditional door-busters deals that customers would line up for, instead rolling out some of their best sales online. In total for the holiday shopping season, Adobe predicts US online spending will hit $184 billion, a 30% increase over last year. With lots of online orders, comes lots of returns. Here's how to use Walmart's new service.

How to use Walmart's pickup option for returns

Carrier Pickup by FedEx is free for items shipped and sold by, and it's available in areas where FedEx offers small-parcel pickup service.

You can start the return process for online orders by going to the Walmart app or website and viewing your order history. Click on the item you want to return (or replace) and give a reason for the return. Then select "Carrier Pickup by FedEx" and choose a date for the pickup. You'll then be able to print a return label.

Box up the item along with all accessories in its original packaging, put the return label on the outside of the box and hand it over to FedEx when it comes to pick up the item.

If you purchased the item with a credit card, your refund will appear as credit back on that card in 7-10 business days, Walmart says. Refunds to debit cards should show up in 5-7 days. If you made the purchase using a gift card, Walmart says, the refund will be put back on the original gift card immediately once the item is received by the warehouse.

Drop off and in-store returns

Walmart customers can also choose to drop off returns at USPS or FedEx locations, using pretty much the same process. People who don't have a printer at home can still select "Drop off at FedEx" as the return method and receive a QR code. They can then take their return item and QR code to a FedEx location, and a staffer there will print out the return label for free.

Of course, you can still return items in store as well.  At many stores, Walmart said, it'll open alternative return locations to help maintain social distancing.

You can see all of Walmart's return policies and options here.
