Roost is a premier choice for most of the Pokemon that can learn it. This move restores the user's HP by half of its max HP, making it one of the stronger HP restoring moves in the game.

This also has the additional effect of removing the Flying-type on the Pokemon for that turn. Meaning, if the Pokemon is dual-typed it will only consider the non-Flying one until the end of the turn. Due to this, the Pokemon will be hit by Ground-type moves due to the lack of Flying-typing.

Roost can only be learned via Egg Move, Level Up, or by Default.

*User loses their Flying type

Roost is a health restoring Flying-type move. It is TM51 and found on Route 10 by surfing east from the EV trainer house in versions 1.04 and beyond.

Effect

Roost restores half of the user's maximum HP.
If a Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, it will lose its Flying type until the end of the turn:

  • If a pure Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, it will become Normal-type until the end of the turn.
  • If a Pokémon with another type besides Flying uses Roost, it will simply lose its Flying type until the end of the turn.

Losing Flying type is the only way Roost can make an ungrounded Pokémon grounded : i.e. using Roost does not negate the effects of Air Balloon, Levitate, Telekinesis and Magnet Rise, regardless of the user's typing.

Roost (move)

Roost (Japanese: はねやすめFeather Rest) is a non-damaging Flying-typemove introduced in Generation IV. It was TM51 in Generation IV, TM19 from Generation VI to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and TM50 in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Effect

Generation IV

Roost restores half of the user's maximum HP.

If a Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, until the end of the turn, its Flying type is ignored when it is hit by attacks: If the Pokémon has another type, only that type is considered; if the Pokémon is a pure Flying type, all attacks will be normally effective against it.

Generation V onward

If a Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, it will now lose its Flying type until the end of the turn:

  • If a pure Flying-type Pokémon successfully uses Roost, it will become Normal-type until the end of the turn. If a Pokémon is a Fire/Flying type that lost its Fire type due to Burn Up, using Roost causes it to become typeless until the end of the turn.
  • If a Pokémon with another type besides Flying uses Roost, it will lose its Flying type until the end of the turn (but will not have it replaced with the Normal type).
  • If a pure Flying-type Pokémon that has been affected by Forest's Curse/Trick-or-Treat successfully uses Roost, its Flying type will be replaced by Normal, in addition to retaining its Grass or Ghost type addition.

If a Pokémon is ungrounded only due to its Flying type, successfully using Roost will make it grounded until the end of the turn (and therefore susceptible to effects such as terrain and Rototiller).

If powered up by a Flyinium Z into Z-Roost, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.
