ADAMS — Despite what its name may imply, Adams Hometown Market is new in town.

But the grocery store's manager, Bob Pytko, is not.

"The hardworking and dedicated folks behind these doors have been tirelessly working morning, afternoon, [and] night to make sure this preparation could happen so everyone can have the supermarket they've been waiting for," said Pytko, a 10-year resident of Adams and the new market's first store manager.

Pytko's hiring is emblematic of Adams Hometown Market's efforts to ingratiate itself with the town of Adams, where the Connecticut-based company celebrated the opening of a new store on Friday morning.

In less than a month, Adams Hometown Market managed to close on the sale of the former Big Y market on Myrtle Street, hire more than 50 new employees, and prepare the store for a grand opening that drew dozens of Adams residents and local officials on Friday.

"This has been an overwhelming experience for us," said Russ Greenlaw, the company's vice president of operations.

Friday's grand opening rivaled any town parade or block party, with dozens of locals pouring into the parking lot to celebrate the opening of the town's only grocery store.

"I can't thank you enough for the way that you've inspired us," Greenlaw said, addressing Adams residents. "This is for you. Thank you for making it worthwhile for us, thank you for getting us out of bed in the morning."

As Adams Hometown Market opened its doors, Adams residents grabbed shopping carts and lined up to enter.

The new store features fresh produce, a butcher shop and deli, a bakery, fresh meals and prepared salads.

"It looks awesome, I'm very impressed so far" said town resident Anita Gutmann as she walked through the store on Friday morning.

When the Big Y announced it would lay off 90 employees and close its Adams location in February, the company said it was in negotiations with a not-yet-named buyer that would step in and provide the town with a grocery store. The closure sparked concern not only for the store's employees, but for town residents who lack access to transportation to alternatives in North Adams or Pittsfield.

Sandra Meczywor, a resident of Myrtle Street who walks to the market, was upset when Big Y closed. "I think it's great," Meczywor as she walked down an aisle of the new market. "We were upset when the Big Y went out."

But within weeks it was announced that Adams Hometown Market would purchase the Myrtle Street store. On March 11, they closed on the sale for $348,995.

Though it had no connection to the town it shares part of its name with, Adams Hometown Market is familiar with providing groceries in small towns. It now has 15 locations throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island and is independently owned under the larger IGA supermarket company umbrella. The stores are supplied by Bozzuto's, Inc.; the Adams Hometown Market takes its name from Bozzuto's founder Adam Bozzuto.

A better fit

It would seem to be a better fit for the space than Big Y, whose operating model has outgrown the 15,000-square-foot building Myrtle Street market it first purchased in 1984.

The Myrtle Street store was far smaller than the Big Y's typical supermarket, which includes offerings like pizza and sushi that could not be accommodated within the footprint of the Adams store.

Given the small size of the property, the building could not be expanded.

But for Adams Hometown Market, the space — and town — is familiar.

"This is right within our specialty. We operate smaller stores and hometown markets, and this is actually kind of our ideal store. We were very, very interested in coming here," Greenlaw said.

About 75 to 80 percent of the new store's employees previously worked at Big Y, Greenlaw estimated. The company interviewed 149 people in five hours and received another 80 online in order to hire rapidly enough to open by March 29.

To local officials, the arrival of Adams Hometown Market was nothing short of a miracle.

Select Board Chairman John Duval recalled his initial discussions with Greenlaw.

"He wanted to make sure that this community was a growing community, a progressive community, and a welcoming community. No question, we gave him some good information and when he left here I think he was very excited for him and his company," Duval said.

Greenlaw credited the town's leadership with inspiring Adams Hometown Market — a small company that is careful in its decision-making — to take on a new store in Adams.

"I've had the chance to do this on a few occasions, and I have never had a better welcome not only from the citizens and our future customers in Adams, but from your municipal leaders," Greenlaw said.

One of those local leaders was state Rep. John Barrett III, who called it "the most remarkable" projects he's seen in his decades of public service.

"Adams, I can say to you, is headed in the right direction and it's just the beginning of many more good things," Barrett said.

To new Town Administrator Jay Green, the new store "stands as a beacon that Adams is open for business."

"Today begins a new chapter in Adams' history, a chapter filled with positivity and optimism," Green said. "Working together, such as [with] this project, the future is only bright for this town."
