Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).

Open Source

Open Source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify or enhance. Programs released under this license can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. There are many different open source licenses but they all must comply with the Open Source Definition - in brief: the software can be freely used, modified and shared.

Free to Play

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.

Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program's interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.

Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations.

Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose.

Every time there is a Silhouette Studio update I get questions about how to update to the newest version of the software. This step by step guide applies to updating to any new Silhouette Studio Version...beta or otherwise.

I know it can be scary and intimidating to update...but the good news is I'm here to walk you through step by step.

Please note this tutorial applies to going from V4 to V4.1 and V4.1 to V4.2 and V4.2 to V4.3 and between versions of V4.4!

Backup Your Silhouette Studio Library

The first thing you want to do before updating to a new version of Silhouette Studio is to backup or export your existing Silhouette Studio library.

The process to export your library depends on the version of the software you are CURRENTLY using. With Silhouette Studio open go the library... below find the version you are using below and then follow the stepsThis will save a backup copy of your entire library on your desktop or wherever you direct it to save. The file will be an .EXEC file with a black preview icon and some green text. If you attempt to review this file it will open with a whole bunch of text jargon. Don't worry - that's to be expected.

Keep your library back up on your computer as insurance. I recommend you backup your library at least once a month if you use it to store your designs.

You do not need to export the Cloud folder from your library, but if you want to do so you can. The export steps are the same as for the Local User folder.

Find the Latest Version of Silhouette Studio

Despite the "Check for Updates" option under the Help menu of Silhouette Studio will almost always tell you there are no updates available. ERRR wrong.  Often times there is an just have to know where to look..and you have to know (or check) which version of Silhouette Studio are you currently running.

Downloading Beta Versions of Silhouette Studio

Sometimes there are open beta versions of the software. Open Beta means that version of the software remains in a testing mood and the software development team continues to work out bugs.  They're looking for a wider pool of users (than when in closed beta) to use the software and report (expected) bugs. The hope is to flush out the issues and fix them before that version of the software is moved into full release.

In a new change, Silhouette America is now listing the beta versions right under the Current Versions of the software.

Legacy or older versions of the software can be found by expanding the Heritage menu.

  • MAC users will have the option to overwrite the existing version of Silhouette Studio or "Keep Both." I suggest you keep both at least until you confirm a successful installation.
  • PC users should be aware that a newer version of the Silhouette Studio software will automatically overwrite any old versions.  For this reason, the only way to downgrade Silhouette Studio is to completely uninstall the software before re-installing a lower version.
Finish the installation process by following the on-screen prompts. For MAC users your will need to drag the Silhouette Studio icon into your Applications folder and then launch it from there.

Ratings and Reviews

This is so much better than the first silhouette for mobile.

I like this as I’m learning but, I’m have a hard time trying to put layers on top of each other in the right order. Also changing color of item. It hard for me to visualize it in the right colors. Maybe I haven’t explored enough and that is in the app. If not I hope the developers are reading reviews.

Thank you for your feedback! We are continually working to add functionality to Silhouette Go, and we think you will be pleased with many of the updates that come in the future! While changing colors is not currently a feature, you may find some helpful tips by watching our demo video on YouTube.

Super simple, great to use on the go!

I love this app for my Silhouette Portrait and Cameo! It’s great to just open a design and cut it, sketch, or print & cut with minimal effort. I appreciate all the helpful tips available, as well. If I want to make serious alterations or design from scratch, I’ll stick with the desktop version of Silhouette Studio, but for ease and mobility, this app is awesome! I also love that I can save custom designs to my library in Silhouette Studio and open them in the Silhouette Go app.

So frustrated!!!

I was working on an image for an hour. Since the app only allows a very basic editing feature, I had to covert several files, upload here and pull elements from each file to create the image I was looking for and.. then all of a sudden the app did some sort of reset and I LOST EVERYTHING!!! I’m on a timeline for a T-shirt order and now I have to start ALL OVER 🥺😭😤
There needs to be a way to save our work in the app to our library!!! This is ridiculous and a waste of time to have to start all over just because there isn’t a “save” feature!!!

We're sorry you had trouble with the app. Thank you very much for your feature suggestion. We are continually working to add functionality to Silhouette Go, and we think you will be pleased with many of the updates that come in the future! If you continue to experience crashing issues, please reach out to [email protected]
