Graduation and Commencement

Graduation is the official confirmation of the completion of all degree requirements, as maintained on your degree audit report, and is recorded on your official transcript, both of which are administered by the Registrar's Office.

Commencement is a formal event, held twice annually (spring and fall), to celebrate and recognize the milestone of completing (or the anticipated completion of) a program or degree for a respective group of students. Participation in commencement is optional and does not confirm completion of degree requirements. Commencement activities (Commencement Expo, President’s Outstanding Student Awards, and Commencement) are facilitated by Student Life & Leadership Development.

Applying to Graduate Requires Registration for the Graduation Requirements Workshop

In order to apply for graduation, you must register in eServices for the Graduation Requirements Workshop, WKSP GRAD, (along with your final courses within the semester in which you intend to graduate). WKSP GRAD is an online workshop through D2L Brightspace. It contains all the information concerning graduation and a quiz where you can select your intention regarding commencement participation.

If you missed the deadline to self-register for the Graduation Requirements Workshop, please complete the Appeal to Graduate Past Deadline form below.

Once you are enrolled in the workshop, your student account will be billed a $20 graduation fee, payable through eServices, which covers the cost of your original diploma.

If you are having difficulty accessing the Graduation Requirements workshop please contact the Graduation Office at [email protected]

Honors eligibility

The honors designations for undergraduate degrees and the respective cumulative GPA required for each are as follows:

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.900 or higher
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.800 to 3.899
  • Cum Laude: 3.700 to 3.799

To qualify for an honors designation, undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 30 upper division credits in graded (A–F courses) at Metropolitan State University. The cumulative GPA is calculated on the basis of all graded courses taken at Metropolitan State University.

For more information on graduation with honors, please view the University Procedure #252.

Your diploma

Diplomas are mailed to graduates’ permanent mailing address approximately 6 weeks after grades are posted. Any holds on any of your MN State accounts may delay receipt of your diploma package.

Commencement Activities

Student Life and Leadership Development, the Registrar's Office, and many other departments partner closely to provide graduates with a memorable and positive experience as they complete their academic journeys at Metropolitan State.

Commencement activities for undergraduate and graduate students include the Commencement Expo, President's Outstanding Student Awards Reception, and Commencement Ceremony.

Student Life and Leadership Development facilitates all Commencement activities events.

President's Outstanding Student Awards Reception

Each semester, academic units select one outstanding graduating student to be recognized as the President's Outstanding Student Awards Reception. Undergraduate students can be nominated by faculty, staff, other students, or self-nominate each semester. The President's Outstanding Student Awards reception is by invitation, and allows for each of the academic units to celebrate the academic and co-curricular achievements of the impeccable students at the university.

Graduating students (undergraduate and graduate) can self-nominate or communicate with their faculty or academic advisor for consideration to receive their college or school’s President’s Outstanding Student Award. The deadline for nomination will be available in the Commencement D2L workshop and on the Academic Calendar. For more information or questions regarding nomination and selection, please contact your academic college or school directly.

Metro State Graduation Rate & Retention Rates

Overall, 53.8% of Metro State Undergrads Finish Within Six Years

At Metro State , there were 3,131 bachelors degree candidates in the class of 2015 . By 2017 , six years after beginning their degree, 53.8% of these students had graduated. After an additional two years, 56.5% of this class eventually completed their degree.

We consider the "on-time" graduation rate for a bachelor's degree to be four years, but colleges typically report their graduation rates after six or even eight years.

Overall Metro State Six Year Graduation Rate  (53.8% )

Overall Metro State Eight Year Graduation Rate  (56.5% )

Metro StateUndergraduate Graduation Rate

This implies that 43.5% did not graduate within eight years. Of these 1,364 students, 47 were still working towards their degree, 556 had transferred to a different institution, and Metro State lost contact with the remaining 760 whom we assume dropped out.

Some Students Take More Time to Graduate

First-time, full-time students under the age of 25 are much more likely to graduate in four years (on-time). Some schools cater mostly to traditional students while others cater to “non-traditional” students who may be attending part time and thus are likely to take longer to graduate.

Comparing the graduation rates of specific cohorts shown below will be more revealing than the overall statistics shared above.

First-Time / Full-time Students at Metro State Represent 2.0% of the Class of 2015 and 1.0% of all Their Bachelor's Degree Graduations.

Nationwide, the average graduation rate for first-time undergraduates attending classes full-time is: 35.8% after four years, 46.4% after six years, and 47.8% after eight years.

Metro State is Graduating Students Slower Than we Expected

Graduation Information

The Office of the Registrar is located in the Student Success Building, Suite 160 (#3). They are responsible for making approved degree exceptions to students' Degree Progress reports, performing final degree checks, preparing for the fall and spring commencement ceremonies, conferring degrees and certificates, and distributing diplomas.

Degree Progress Report

The Degree Progress Report is an advising tool to be used by students and their advisors throughout the students' academic career at MSU Denver.  Reports can be viewed by logging on to the Student Hub, or printed/viewed in the student's Major department.

Graduation Procedures

All students formally declare their degree/certificate candidacy by submitting an Application for Graduation with the Office of the Registrar via the Student Hub just prior to their anticipated semester of graduation, but no later than the deadline stipulated on the Academic Calendar . Students who miss the deadline to apply for graduation must apply for a subsequent semester.

After submitting the Application for Graduation, students will have their academic records reviewed for completion of all degree requirements. All degree applicants will be notified their graduation status and any discrepancies that exist via their student email. Students will be given a deadline by which to explain these discrepancies to the Office of the Registrar. Students will not be eligible to remain a graduation candidate if they do not comply with this deadline. As candidates for graduation, students will receive information about the final steps in the graduation process and the commencement ceremony. Students should ensure that their current address is on file with the Office of the Registrar via the Student Hub.

Graduation Checklist

  • Review the Requirements for your degree/certificate program.
  • Review the Academic Policies and Procedures (pertaining to the Degree Progress Report, graduation, diplomas and commencement, and honors and awards).
  • Review your Degree Progress Report with your major department.
  • If necessary, correct any discrepancies on the Degree Progress Report in consultation with your major department advisor.

Commencement Ceremony

Commencement ceremonies are held at the end of the fall and spring semesters. Graduates are encouraged to attend one of the two ceremonies. The commencement program lists candidates and degree. Although there is no commencement ceremony in the summer, students can still graduate. Summer graduates are asked to attend the fall commencement ceremony. Their names and degree will appear only in the fall commencement program. Check MSU Denver's website for complete, up-to-date information about commencement at msudenver.edu/commencement, or call 303-556-6226.

Diplomas and Transcripts

Diplomas are mailed approximately six weeks after the semester ends. Students must update their mailing address if there has been a change.

Official transcripts with the posted degree will be available approximately four weeks after the semester ends. Students may request transcripts as early as the middle of their last semester and indicate that it is to be held until the degree is posted. Transcripts may be requested in person at the Office of the Registrar, Student Success Building, Suite 160 (#3), by fax at 303-556-3999, or via the web at the Registrar's homepage msudenver.edu/registrar under "Students," then "Transcripts."
