Columbia lawn tractor review

Columbia lawn tractor review DEFAULT

As the owner of a 10-acre property, I’ve owned Columbia mowers for more than 5 years. I’m happy to share my knowledge and experience with you. My property has both rough and smooth terrain, as well as obstacles like a pool, a pond, and several gardens. I have both a zero-turn mower and a push mower so I can get the cut I want in various sections of my property.

So, Are Columbia Mowers Any Good Really?

Yes, Columbia mowers offers great value for the price. Although a less well-known brand, Columbia will give you a great cut and manicured lawn for both small suburban lots, and  large country properties.

Table of Contents

How Do I Choose the Right Columbia Mower?

Choosing the right Columbia mower requires a bit of an analysis of your needs. If you have a small lot that you plan to cut once a week, the Columbia 21-inch 159cc OHV Gas 2-in-1 Push Lawn Mower is likely all you need. I have this model and it works great. I use it around the pool area and near my back patio, to get a nice clean cut where the kids play the most.

For bigger properties, you’ll want a lawn tractor or a zero-turn mower. If you have a lot of rough areas or gardens/ponds, as I do, a zero-turn will probably better suit your needs. I use the Columbia 50-inch 23 HP Kohler Dual Hydrostatic Zero-Turn and I’m quite happy with it.

Are Columbia Mowers Easy to Use?

As mowers go, Columbia is about as easy to use as any other brand. The zero-turn mowers take a bit of getting used to if you haven’t used one before. All it takes is an afternoon of cutting and you should be mowing like a pro! The controls are easily accessible and clearly labeled so you can get the job done in less time and get on with the rest of your day.

What Type of Warranty do Columbia Mowers Have?

The mowers come with a 3-year limited warranty. This is not the best warranty in the industry, but it’s not the worst either. Keep in mind this applies to new mowers only.

When you buy through an accredited Columbia dealer, they’ll help set up the warranty for you. I bought my Columbia mowers brand new and I haven’t had any issues with them that required a repair under warranty.

You can access this website for more information about Columbia Mowers Dealers.

Are Columbia Mowers Durable?

I’ve had my Columbia mowers for more than 5 years now, and I found them to be quite durable. I’m in Ontario, so winters can be pretty harsh. I keep mine under a tarp outside (my garage is full) and I have been able to rely on them year after year.

I spend about 30 minutes each week in the spring and summer, changing the oil and doing minor maintenance on both mowers, and this helps keep them in good running condition.

I’ve had to have the starter replaced on my zero-turn, and have minor repairs done to my push mower but that is to be expected with any mower that gets regular use.

Replacement parts can be purchased from your local dealer or from big box stores like Home Depot. They can also be found online at sites like Amazon.ca.

What Accessories Are Available with Columbia Mowers?

There are limited accessories that can be purchased with Columbia mowers. Bags for collection, cup holder kits for lawn tractors and zero turns, arm rest kits, fender kits, and a few more options.

I think other brands, like Cub Cadet and John Deere offer much more in the area of accessories, but if all you’re doing is your own lawn and not using it for business purposes, this is all you should need.

Accessories are not overpriced, they range in price from $30 – $100.

Are Columbia Mowers Comfortable to Ride?

My zero turn has a fully upholstered, high-back seat that gives me the comfort I need when mowing my property.  At 59, I have aches and pains that my 23 year old self never had. It takes me about 3 hours to do my entire property, and I am never sore or stiff once I’m finished.

Do Columbia Mowers Give a Good Cut?

Simply put, yes Columbia gives a good cut. If you’re picky about how manicured your lawn looks, then a Columbia mower is sure to please. Like anything, the better you keep your mower maintained, the better your mower will work; i.e. change the oil regularly, keep the blade sharpened, etc.

A Columbia mower will help your home become the best-looking one on the block! If you’re concerned about having the best lawn in the neighborhood, a Columbia mower can help. I’ve gotten compliments on the look of my front yard from friends and neighbors, although that is not the number one reason I like a nicely manicured lawn.

What Deck Sizes are Available?

Generally speaking, the larger the deck size, the faster you’ll get the job done. Columbia mowers come with deck sizes ranging from 34” to 60”. Be careful about choosing a bigger size just because you want to get done faster. A ½ acre lot will suit a 40” deck size, while a 3-acre lot will do better with a 60” deck size. Is your property one large area, or are there several pieces/parts you have to cover? If your property is broken up into smaller bits, a smaller deck size may be better suited and give you a better result.

There is a good article here about factors to consider when deciding on a deck size.

How Much do Columbia Mowers Cost?

The costs range from $699 for a push mower to about $6,000 for a zero-turn mower. Accessories and options will obviously increase the cost, as will extended warranty options.

That investment will do you well, though, in the long run. You’ll have a well-manicured lawn and a mower that is reliable and durable.

There are always used models for sale as well, usually for a fraction of the price of a new mower.

What are Some of the Features of a Columbia Mower?

The Zero turn mowers are equipped with Briggs & Stratton engines, with an average of 22HP.

Other standard features on the zero turn mowers include:

·         ZT 2200 transmission

·         High pressure deck wash system (patented)

·         50” stamped cutting deck w/triple blade

·         Electronic fingertip engagement PTO clutch

Standard features on push mowers include:

·         Honda or Briggs & Stratton engine

·         21” steel deck

·         Push button electric start (if electric)

·         3-in-1 options of side discharge, mulch, rear bag

·         Rear wheel drive system

Features on lawn tractor models include:

·         Hydrostatic transmission w/ foot control.

·         46″ heavy duty cutting deck w/twin blades & deck wash

·         22hp Columbia EFI twin cylinder engine or Koehler 22hp V-twin engine

Features may vary on various models within the same category, but generally I think you get a good set of standard options on all models.

What do the Reviews Say?

I looked at 3 different sites for buyer reviews:

Consumerreports.org

Bestproductlists.com

Popularmechanics.com

I didn’t find a lot of reviews compared to other brands. There were about 25 reviews, and Columbia received an average rating of 3 out of 5.

Most buyers like the quality of the cut Columbia mowers provide and the relatively reasonable price.

Some buyers were unhappy with the warranty length and the fact that they are not well suited for landscaping businesses, in the sense that they are not as durable as other brands.

Still other were not happy that Columbia seems to be more difficult to purchase in the U.S.

Who Makes Columbia Mowers?

Columbia mowers are made by a company called MTD. Founded in 1932, MTD manufactures other mower brands like Cub Cadet and Troy-Bilt. Their headquarters are in Ohio, but have manufacturing plants all over the globe.

Columbia mowers are available from dealers across the country, and from stores like Home Depot. These mowers are readily available in Canada, but less so in the U.S. I’m located in Ontario so I have never had an issue finding or purchasing Columbia products or replacement parts.

Although MTD is an American-owned company, Columbia mowers are made in Kitchener, Ontario Canada.

Is a Columbia Mower a Good Investment?

All in all, a Columbia mower is a good investment if you’re looking for a reliable and durable mower for your lawn. Whether you have a small lot that you plan on mowing Saturday mornings, or you have a large country property like I do, you’ll get good results with a Columbia mower.

If you’re looking for a mower that’s built for commercial or business use, you may want to look at other, better-known brands, with better warranties. If you’re going to use these mowers all day long on several different properties, it may not give you the results you’re looking for. These are not meant for business or commercial use, at least in my opinion.

Most and Least Reliable Gas Riding Mower Brands

To help you find a reliable riding mower, Consumer Reports incorporates ratings for brand reliability and owner satisfaction into its Overall Scores for lawn mowers and tractors. That's along with data collected during our extensive field testing, which covers everything from handling to how well a mower cuts in multiple modes to noise output at the user's ear and at 25 feet.

To calculate predicted reliability, we survey our members about the products they own and use the results to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time. Models from brands that rate Fair or Poor for predicted reliability aren't eligible for our recommended lists of products, regardless of their performance.

We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their mower to friends or family, and that question serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction rating.

These latest findings come from CR's exclusive member surveys, which leveraged data on more than 22,404 riding mowers that members purchased between 2010 and 2020.

Below is a detailed breakdown of the winners and losers across the three gas riding mower categories we test. This year, we also have performance results on battery riding mowers. But because battery riders are a relatively new product category, we don't have yet have reliability or owner satisfaction ratings for that group.

(For our reliability results on walk-behind mowers, check out our guide to the most and least reliable walk-behind mower brands.)

Horrible. This is probably the worst mower you could purchase. The mower I purchased is a 30” cut riding mower manufactured for Sears. I purchased this mower in 2018. It is a 2017 model so it was already at least a year old when purchased. At the end of the first year I had to replace the drive belt that shredded and left me in my front yard and in the past two years I have had to replace this belt every two to three uses. I replaced the pulley and belts back in June and today 8-21-2021 I just shredded another belt. These mowers are a headache from start to finish. I will never purchase anything that touched by the letters MTD. #MTDISJUNK

I would not recommend the Columbia lawn tractor. It has been in repair mode more often than it runs. I had it one week before it had to be picked up for repair. I hope to donate it while it is running.

Your company does not know what y’all are doing. I placed a order with y’all on 3/20/21 and paid extra for shipping on the first order for the lawnmower blade to have my money taken out of our bank account and NEVER RECEIVED THE PRODUCTS. Come to find out they NEVER SHIPPED THE LAWNMOWER BLADE OUT AFTER I CALLED TO INQUIRE ABOUT MY ORDER. The second order was on 3/20/21 also for the lawnmower air filter. We still have NEVER Received the air filter but y’all have taken my money out of my bank account. We were given our money back on the blade from 3/20/21. But I have called several times and no one can tell me why we can’t receive our orders. They continue telling me it’s waiting to be picked up by UPS. Then I ordered again for 2 lawnmower blades on 3/28/21 because I need these products to be able to run the lawnmower.

They have lied about everything telling me first that the products were shipped out and they were never shipped come to find out. I have never dealt with such a horrible company, that’s with everything down from to customers service and warehouse department. The sad thing is that I have called 3 times and got a case numbers in regards of the orders and nothing been done. All of this has been very disappointing on how a company like themselves treat their customers. Still nothing has been done on none of these orders. They just keep telling you that it’s waiting to be picked up by UPS. Susan is very unprofessional, very rude and has no compassion for the customers. I could go on but I think I have said enough. IF I WOULD HAVE READ THE OTHER REVIEWS I WOULD HAVE NEVER DEALT WITH THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!

The company has resolved the issue for mother mower.

Original review: March 24, 2021

My mother purchases a Troybilt self propel mower that came with a 2 yr manufactured warranty, used to cut a half an acre lot and did it 16-18 times a year. Start cutting grass in March wont stay cranked. Took carb off to clean and empty gas out and refilled and the mower would stop and not crank. After 30 min air filter was little dirty, the MTD finds theses independent shops, gives them video courses and all the sudden their train technician in my opinion not facts. Their china brand crap is invading the market . It's too poorly made to fix and cost more than buying the mower and only little under 2 yrs. Horrible company. Stay away. Buy Honda or Ariens. Not crap mtd products. Wont honor warranty.

I ordered a riding mower with the Stow Hauler attachment on July 1,2020. I have received the mower, but have received no communication from MTD regarding the hauler. I have tried to contact them on numerous occasions, but get put on hold for A VERY LONG TIME, and ultimately have not been able to find out anything. They are hiding from the public because their service is SO POOR! I will make it a point in the future to NOT BUY these products. This company's interest in helping customers is non-existent. NEVER AGAIN!!

I purchased a couple parts for my Huskee mower (MTD motor) on Sunday, 04/26 from mtdparts.com. I paid for the 2-4 day shipping option. Five days went by, and my order was still not shipped, so I finally attempted to contact MTD via phone and chat on Friday morning, 05/01. I waited on hold on the phone for an hour and a half, and kept trying the chat agent for two and a half hours (retrying when it said no agent was available), and got no contact with anyone. Finally, I received an email on Tuesday, 05/05, informing me my order shipped.

I understand things are tough with the COVID pandemic, but the utter lack of communication or announcements on any of MTD’s online presences (including MTDparts.com) is unacceptable. Even something like “all orders may be delayed” would have been fine. At least then, I’d know to go somewhere else if my needs were time-sensitive. It is absolutely infuriating that I cannot get anyone to give me an explanation, refund the extra shipping I paid, etc. I will never use MTDparts.com again.

First off I just have to say I absolutely love these negative reviews from people who bought one of these tractors and complain because it shuts off when they put it in reverse and they can't mow backwards, that is just hilarious, or they get out of the seat and the tractor dies so they go buy a new battery! LOL that is priceless! So anyway I have a 1997 Huskee GT and this thing has been the best garden tractor, mower, bulldozer, rototiller, snow plower oh, anything you can think of! I've pulled stumps with this thing!

MTD makes the absolute BEST yard equipment as far as I'm concerned and IF my 1997 ever gives up the ghost, I'll buy another one just like her, and if she outlives me I'll pass it down to my son who is almost the same exact age. Thanks MTD for years of hard work and producing tough, high quality machines (that are so thoughtful they shut off if you leave your seat).

I purchased an MTD lawn mower 7/30/2018 and used it 3 times before putting it up for the winter. It was stored under a protected carport. I used only gasoline that had been treated for ethanol. When I tried to start it in April 2019 it would not start. I took it to authorized service and paid $85 to have it diagnosed. Their evaluation was that it needed a new carburetor and that it was not covered by warranty. I called the MTD customer service and they said that "due to EPA requirements that the jets in the carburetor had been made smaller and that was probably the problem". They also said it was not covered by warranty. I've read many other reviews saying the same kind of thing. This company should not be allowed to sell a product that only lasts for 3 uses.

MTD is a good mower for it's age of (26) years. I can still get parts at local shops and online. Easy to work on not like a car can still find working support from MTD.
