Discover the complexities of the Cusp of Mystery and Imagination

This article's content is based on The Secret Language of Birthdays book by Gary Goldschneider & Thomas Rezek.

If you were born on the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp, from January 17 to 23, you possess some seriously contrasting energies that make you incredibly unique! You were born on the Cusp of Mystery and Imagination, and you are a hardworking idealist.

Capricorn and Aquarius are very different signs, yet this combination gives you the ability to view the world in a new and unparalleled way. Saturn, the planet of limits and lessons, is the ruling planet of Capricorn, encouraging you to take care of your real-world responsibilities and have a practical outlook on life. On the other hand, Uranus, Aquarius’ ruling planet, pushes you to think radically and open the minds of those around you. Together, these abilities can make you a powerfully brilliant, ambitious, and creative person.

The elements that influence you create a complex contradiction as well. The Earth side of you (Capricorn) is stable and determined, while the Air half (Aquarius) craves variety and spontaneity. You have the added challenge of learning to feed both these sides of your personality, but if you can channel these energies correctly, you’ll be able to thrive in any situation.

Born on the Cusp of Mystery and Imagination, you have a lot of excitement happening internally. Your mind is always churning out interesting thoughts and ideas, and you experience more breakthrough moments than others. However, the constant stream of fantasies and dreams flowing through your mind can sometimes make you seem detached or uninterested in the people and situations around you.

You’re all about stimulating conversation, and you’re a wiz to talk to. You see the world as it is and love to discuss its problems and ways to fix it. While this makes you an intriguing conversationalist, it can be intimidating and isolating when it comes to catching up with your friends and family. You are full of wisdom and opinions about worldly issues, but when was the last time you asked your loved ones how they’re doing? It’s a noble thing to strive for the future, but don’t forget to take a break every now and then to check in on the world that’s right in front of you.

Life will never be dull for those born on the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp. When you aren’t hard at work, your creative ideas and social connections fill your life with excitement and purpose. You’re capable of being a great leader and inspiring necessary change, if you’re willing to speak up. But remember, even the greatest ideas require support from those around you, so put extra effort into connecting with and appreciating the people in your life!

Determined, creative, entertaining, idealistic, witty, empathetic

Born on the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp, you are blessed with the drive for success and the gift of creativity. Normally these two traits might clash, but for you these traits allow you to dream big and envision positive change. You can easily put yourself in others’ shoes and see the world from different perspectives. This also makes you a kind and generous friend -- when you take the time to listen.

Detached, chaotic, selfish, aloof, critical, judgmental

Because you have your amazing imagination and creativity to keep you entertained, you may close yourself off in your own world and feel like you don’t need others to keep you company. You enjoy being alone with your thoughts, but this can make your loved ones feel unwanted -- which is a shame because they are your greatest supporters! Remember that teamwork makes the dream work and if you don’t put a little effort into your relationships every now and then, they may not be there anymore when you need them.

You enjoy your freedom, so you may find that committed and co-dependent relationships aren’t really your cup of tea. You thrive on your own, but you enjoy the support and friendship that a lover offers. It might take time until you’re ready to settle, but when you do, you’ll find that Fire signs keep things fun and light! They’ll dig your creative work ethic and can easily get behind your radical ideas. Air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius can also make good partners for you. They’ll be able to keep up with your constant flow of conversation, and be understanding of your not-so-emotional personality.

Pay attention! The inside of your own head may be entertaining, but it’s important to keep one foot in the real world. You don’t want to miss the important conversations and developments happening around you. Listen to others when they talk to you and don’t be judgmental if they’re not as quick or creative as you are. You’ll have sustainable, long lasting friendships if you’re willing to put in the work. Have fun in life and never let your sense of possibility and imagination fade!

5 Things Those Born On The Sagittarius-Capricorn Cusp Know To Be True

In astrology, a cusp is the imaginary line that separates a pair of consecutive signs in the zodiac.

Not all astrologers agree a person can be included in more than one sign. They say one sign may have a degree of another, but one cannot be part of both.

Yet, as someone who was born a few hours before the clock struck Capricorn, I feel like I'm teetering on the edge of two signs.

When I realized the dual nature of my birthday, I began reading the horoscopes for both Sagittarius and Capricorn. And I found myself feeling more like a Sagicorn.

Maybe I wanted more information to choose from, and maybe I liked picking the cream of each crop and ignoring the parts I didn't enjoy. But, I am always teetering between the two.

And whether it's astrologically accurate or not, I choose to live in both worlds. These are the things I've learned to be true:

1. A Sagittarius' optimism and fearlessness mixes well with a Capricorn's hardworking and practical nature,

I'm able to dream big, and then plan and sweat until that dream comes true. I love starting new projects, and I get really giddy about new adventures. (Thanks, Sag!)

The goat side of me then scouts out the best plan of attack and gets things done.

“Those born on the Sagittarius-Capricorn Cusp begin preparing themselves early for what life may bring. Their motto is 'Always be prepared,'” explains

2. The Sagittarius-Capricorn combination creates a balanced personality.

The strengths of this sign combination are friendliness, humor and loyalty. However, these traits are balanced by moodiness, intensity and a propensity for being closed off.

This means I am usually pretty content to spend the evening reading a book or watching "Project Runway." Yet, if I need to go to a party, I can crack some jokes and schmooze with the best of them.

Being able to turn on one's social switch is a great asset. It takes a lot of focus to maintain relationships, but it is doable.

After all, being responsible and reliable is in my nature.

3. Saying “I love you” is not the easiest, but when it finally comes out, it's said often.

It is said this cusp sign doesn't fall in love easily. I can confirm this, as I have spent years avoiding the casual “OMG, I love you," even with my closest friends.

However, when I find those special someones, I am faithful to the end. I will always stock the fridge with my loves' favorite things. I am always looking out for them and sending them heart-eyed emojis.

I hesitate to give people all of my love because I'm afraid I won't receive the same from them. As succinctly puts it, “Sagicorns need others to give their very best. Because they put forth the best themselves, they won't accept less from anyone else.”

4. Mental and physical athleticism is important.

“A personal challenge is always appreciated.” I get it. I run 30 to 40 miles a week, and I also do at least 50 minutes of planks. I rock climb and do YouTube fitness videos a few times a week.

And I still feel lazy because I don't have a six-pack. Clearly, it's important for me to vigorously compete with myself. This goat starts from the ocean and ascends to the highest mountaintops.

On top of reading, studying and writing for hours every day, I also solve crossword puzzles. For fun, I play with foreign language apps and strategy games.

My mind is one of my prizes.

The Archer (Sagittarius) is a centaur, a half-man and half-horse. It is the only sign of the zodiac that is half-man and half-beast. Centaurs were the great scholars and intellectuals of Greek and Roman myths.

It's reassuring to know I am equally invested in my body and mind.

5. Sagittarii and Capricorns tend to be lucky.

Sometimes, this comes in very literal forms. Take last year, for example.

I won six pairs of shoes, three books, a box of makeup, some koozies, nail decals, a gift card and a week's worth of gourmet food. Maybe I should go to Vegas?

All in all, I like learning about the complexities of my cusp birth, regardless of the accuracy or science behind them.

Each month with On the Cusp, we point our astrological magnifying glass on all the people born between two zodiac signs. Because when your birthday falls at either the tail end or the very beginning of your sun sign’s season, your personality may be influenced by your cosmic neighbor.

Now, fully in holiday mode, it's time to give those on the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp the dedicated astrological spotlight they deserve, and Stefanie Iris Weiss, astrologer and co-author of Surviving Saturn’s Return: Overcoming the Most Tumultuous Time of Your Life, is here to illuminate us. Below, Weiss explains what happens when the pleasant, sage traits of a Sagittarius (November 23 to December 21) meet and blend with expertly overachieving Capricorns (December 22 to January 19).

If you're born on the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp, let me begin with...sorry. We all know that December birthdays, especially those born between December 19 and December 24, get seriously lost in the holiday mix. There is an upside, though: Weiss says the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp is one of the most distinct and powerful of all cusp-crossings.

"It's marked by the deeply meditative and magical winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere," Weiss says. "This is when we’re at our darkest moment, but also when the universe reminds us that the light will return in a few months. That’s the perfect blend of Sagittarius and Capricorn energies—where hope and strength are in perfect balance."

And, on that note, it's worth reminding all that when you're born on the cusp, you're always one sign or the other, but sometimes energies of the neighboring sign factor into your cosmic being. So, let's first unpack these separate identities before we examine how they might merge.

As a refresher, here's what to expect from a Sagittarius:

It's hard not to get along with a Sagittarius—they're malleable and easygoing, and least likely of your friends to be stressed out. Honest and wise, they're happy sitting quietly, thinking and philosophizing. And when they do speak, everyone listens intently. While these words may not always be the, um, kindest, given that Sags are not about tact, you can expect to hear hard truths that are sharp and often hilarious.

And even though Sags don't command attention in a big, extroverted way, they do seek out adventure. Sagittarius is big on solo travel, and that's why they're always imparting information that feels, quite literally, worldly.

And what about Capricorn?

Capricorns are big on a sense of propriety and practicality. They're disciplined and responsible, and one of the few zodiac signs that can always evolve into a better version of themselves when they make a mistake. Caps can be stubborn, but they usually get absolutely everything they want, thanks to that fierce determination.

If you're a Capricorn, it's likely that your work is gorgeous and meticulous, your home is minimalist perfection, and you're a role model to us all. According to Weiss, Caps are all about "carefully executed ambitions" and have "a five-year plan to rule the world."

So, what does it mean to be born on the Capricorn-Sagittarius cusp?

A sense of power and discipline is prominent: A Sag born in the late degrees of the season will know when and where to shout her beliefs. "She’ll do it with her whole heart, but she may know better than early or mid-season Sagittarians about how to do so without causing drama and chaos," Weiss says. "She'll tell you how the world works and what to believe in, but she’ll do it with a plan, likely because she knows she can change people’s minds."

So what about Capricorns born closer to the Sagittarius cusp? Well, they're freer in self-expression and have, according to Weiss, "a bit of fire in their hearts." They also go a bit easier on themselves, and are able to embrace a bit of fun when the moment calls for it.

"All Caps grow younger in spirit as they grow older in years, but cusp Caps have a bit of that adventurous youthfulness in them all through their life," Weiss says. "You can draw a Capricorn born close to the cusp into a spontaneously hatched plan with a bit of convincing, even if she planned to stay home and work. But your Capricorn friend born in January? Forget about it. If she said she’s staying in, she’s staying IN."

Each month with On the Cusp, we point our astrological magnifying glass on all the people born between two zodiac signs.

Because when your birthday falls at either the tail end or the very beginning of your sun sign’s season, your personality may be influenced by your cosmic neighbor.

Now it’s time to give those on the Capricorn Aquarius cusp the dedicated astrological spotlight they deserve, and Stefanie Iris Weiss, astrologer and co-author ofSurviving Saturn’s Return: Overcoming the Most Tumultuous Time of Your Life, is here to illuminate us. Below, Weiss (who is available for 2020 readings), explains what happens when practical, overachieving Capricorns (December 22 to January 19) mix traits with the free-minded, genius-leaning Aquarius babies (January 20 to February 18).

It is, legitimately, the dawning of the age of Aquarius. Or okay, not the age of Aquarius, but for sure Aquarius season, and that means it's a really fun time to let your hair down, so to speak. Aquarians have the energy of a nutty genius: Someone with out-of-the box ideas and a desire to explore the weirder paths that this world offers. That's why I'm curious about those born on the Capricorn Aquarius cusp, because despite being celestially close, conventional Capricorns seemingly couldn't be more different than their radical neighbor.

"When solid, hard-working Capricorn steps into the airy world of Aquarius…all the travails and accomplishments of Capricorn season give way to intellect and innovation." —astrologer Stefanie Iris Weiss

"When solid, hard-working Capricorn steps into the airy world of Aquarius, we stop climbing the proverbial mountain of the goat to take a deep breath and think about the future," says Weiss. "All the travails and accomplishments of Capricorn season give way to intellect and innovation." And so, this a cusp of contradictions—which, on the bright side, helps blur each sign's sharp edges. Let's unpack:

Just to backtrack, here are the common traits to Capricorns

The actual symbol of a Capricorn is a horned goat with a fish tail, which is actually the only directly bizarre feature of this all-business star sign. Capricorns are interested in world domination, but they're quite methodical about it. Because they're so disciplined and well-mannered, they reach their goals with measured, polite steps up a gilded staircase.

And Aquarius signs generally have these traits

While Caps are all business, water-bearing Aquarians are artistes. Not necessarily in the literal sense, but they do tend to have a profound and utterly unique sense of creative genius. An Aquarian may be a deep and sharp thinker who churns out ideas that are about 40 years ahead of everyone else. That being said, they likely have little patience for the somewhat mundane aspects of everyday life. Basically, they'll feel trapped if you try to take them out for a Bed Bath & Beyond run on a Sunday.

So, what does being on the Capricorn Aquarius cusp mean for your personality?

If you're a late-degree Capricorn, you're not as focused on propriety as your mid-season counterparts. That's because a late-degree Cap is less rigid and more open to ideas, even when those ideas skew more bonkers. "Capricorns born close to the cusp tend to be more willing to forgive themselves for perceived failures, as they recognize that the whole community is responsible for outcomes, and it’s not all on their own sturdy shoulders," says Weiss. "Capricorn natives born toward the very end of the sign tend to want to give the very best of themselves to efforts that can save the world—they’re less obsessed with status and more obsessed with revolution. "

Meanwhile, early-degree Aquarians are less spacey and detached than those born later in the sign. "With all that close-to-the-cusp Capricorn energy, they’re more grounded and slightly less rebellious than their late-degree Aquarius sisters," says Weiss. "These cusp-y water-bearers will spend less time contemplating a futuristic idea because they’ll want to dive into the nuts and bolts right away. The outcome is as important as the journey, and they have a bit of the 'must-go' energy of a Capricorn. Then tend to enjoy the good life, whereas later-degree Aquarians have a bit more [relaxed energy] in them."

Curious about the readings for other cold-weather cuspers? Here's how the energy of those on the Sagittarius Capricorn cusp looks, and here's what Thanksgiving-time Scorpio Sagittarius cusp babes contend with.

Discover the enlightenment of the Cusp of Prophecy

This article's content is based on The Secret Language of Birthdays book by Gary Goldschneider & Thomas Rezek.

If you were born on the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp, from December 18 to 24, you are a true visionary headed toward certain success! You were born on the Cusp of Prophecy, and your strong will and intense determination will get you anywhere you want to go.

Jupiter rules Sagittarius as the planet of expansion, and Saturn rules Capricorn as the planet of limits and lessons -- this means you get the best of both worlds! This combination of inspiration and sensibility blesses you with not only great visions, but also the practicality to turn them into something real.

You are fueled with the passion of a Fire sign (Sagittarius) and the determination of an Earth sign (Capricorn), pushing you forward with fierce tenacity! The Fire element helps you think positively and get excited about life, but Fire alone can die out quickly. Thankfully you are also influenced by the Earth element, which gives you an extra dose of stamina to take things to the finish line.

People born on the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp are social, caring, and loyal. You'll always be surrounded by people who love and admire you and are interested in what you have to say. Being as enlightened and reasonable as you are, others continually seek your advice. Just be gentle and understanding with those who come to you! Teaching others is a strong suit of yours, as long as you don't get aggressive or impatient with people who learn at a different pace.

The influence of the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp creates brave, hardworking individuals who are ready to thrive! You're motivated and eager to climb ladders and kick some workforce butt. But your intense focus and drive can create a wedge between you and your loved ones. You are independent and uncompromising, and while that attitude will have you changing the world, you might wind up a little lonely from time to time.

If you're born on this Cusp of Prophecy, you have all the potential you could ever imagine, right at your fingertips. Be thankful for the natural energy and determination that boils inside you, but make sure you use it for good. You can make a genuine difference, as long as you have a plan and know where you're going! If you can remember to care for others and have a good time on your way to the top, you'll be the teacher and leader you were born to be!

Responsible, outgoing, friendly, fair, loyal, humorous, successful

Your desire to expand your mind and experience all life has to offer -- coupled with your determination and drive -- can have you making a big, positive impact in your life and the lives of others. You're able to see and understand the issues at large, then be organized enough to take the slow and steady steps needed to reach your goals. You know how to problem solve strategically, without losing your optimistic attitude -- the makings of an incredible leader!

Moody, closed, intense, impatient, uncooperative, selfish

You can come across as quite isolated and intense when you're in the zone. You're influenced by that fiery Sagittarius energy, but your Capricorn side prefers to turn into ambition and success. With all this passion going into your work world, there's not a lot of time left for the people in your life. Though you're outgoing and loyal to those who make it into your circle, you might not offer them the emotional balance that a true friendship or romance deserves.

Belonging to the Cusp of Prophecy means leading, teaching, and often being occupied at work or with your talents and passions. To have a successful romantic relationship, you must partner with someone who's willing to listen and learn from you and understand your busy schedule. Fire signs will match your passion and encourage your hard work, but their go-go-go approach will test your patience. Earth signs will make you feel grounded, and they'll appreciate your reliability as much as you appreciate theirs.

Try not to cut yourself off from others so much. You're a great worker and have brilliant ideas that will push you up the professional ladder, but spending too much time at work or on personal projects can limit your growth. You need intelligent, fun, and philosophical conversation to keep you inspired -- which you can't always find at the office. So let your social butterfly loose! Put more time into making friends and enjoying your loved ones, and you'll feel much more fulfilled overall.

Read About Another Cusp:

According to astrology, people born on dates that fall within a zodiac cusp are in many ways like a Gemini, possessing the traits of two individual signs within your singular personality.

This is one of the reasons a person may feel like the usual descriptions they read about their zodiac Sun sign don't accurately describe them.

What are zodiac cusp signs?

This term refers to the Sun signs, and therefore the dominant nature, of a person whose birthday falls on the cusp — a point of transition between two states — about two or three days before and after the change between two zodiac signs. If you were born on a cusp, you may posses traits drawn from the energies of each zodiac sign your birthday rests between.

For example, if you were born on the Aquarius-Capricorn cusp, you may technically have an Aquarius Sun sign, yet possess several Capricorn personality traits.

RELATED: Your #1 Strongest Personality Trait, According To Your Zodiac Sign

Can you have two zodiac signs?

Not exactly. Rather than technically being born under two signs, people born on a zodiac cusp are unique individuals whose date of birth brings the energy and traits of two distinct signs together, creating a separate astrological personality with blended qualities.

There can only be a cusp if both signs overlapped during the day a person was born.

For example, the zodiac signs Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) and Pisces (February 19 - March 20) overlap from February 15 through the 21st, causing a cusp.

So, if the Sun was moving out of Aquarius into the 12th House where Pisces is located on your birthday, you were born on the Aquarius-Pisces cusp.

Why do some astrologers say there's no such thing as a zodiac cusp?

As astrologer Maryn Altman explains, "planets are either in one sign or in another sign. All a cusp is is a term to describe being at the very end or very beginning of a sign."

"There is no gradient, no blending, no mixing around the cusps," she continues. "With what understanding, it’s important to also note that you aren’t one sign — you’re an entire natal chart."

Zodiac cusps can be confusing, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Possessing the strengths and weaknesses of two signs can be a blessing and a burden. You not only inherit the positives of each, but the negatives, too. All of this opens a world of possibilities.

How do you know if you were born on a zodiac cusp, and if you were, what does it mean?
