How to connect your Xbox 360 controller to a PC

It wasn’t that long ago that trying to connect a controller to your PC was either impossible or you needed plenty of wires and cords to get it done. However, new technology has finally made it easier to connect your controller to your PC by using Bluetooth and similar methods.

Syncing your Xbox 360 Controller is not an exception, and even older models should connect to your laptop or desktop without too much trouble. Here is a basic rundown of how to connect an Xbox 360 controller to your PC.

Plug in your wireless receiver

This section only applies to those with wireless controllers. If you’ve got a wired Xbox 360 controller, skip straight to Install software.

For those of you that own wireless Xbox 360 controllers, connecting to a PC isn’t as straightforward as simply plugging in the device. First off, you’ll need to purchase a capable receiver, then run the proper setup wizard.

Xbox wireless receiver

If you don’t already have a receiver, they typically cost between $10 and $20. The official Microsoft version will cost a bit more than that, but there are many third-party versions available that work perfectly well.

After purchasing the wireless receiver, connect it to a compatible USB port on your computer (see Figure A below). Once plugged in, a green light will appear on the receiver indicating the device is working properly.

Install software

For the wireless gaming receiver and the wireless Xbox 360 controller to properly sync with one another, users must download the necessary software via Microsoft’s website, or the bundled installation disc packaged with their receiver.

If you have the aforementioned installation CD (probably not, but it’s possible), insert it into your PC’s main optical drive and follow the on-screen wizard. You may need to restart your computer. If not, you can download from theXbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows link; if wired, select Xbox 360 Controller for Windows instead. Choose which version of Microsoft Windows you’re using — the Windows 7 drivers will work for Windows 8 and Windows 10 — select the operating system language and click Download.

Once the download screen pops up, hitRun and allow the Xbox 360 Accessories Setup program to install the required files. Again, you may be required to restart your computer upon completion of the install.

Syncing the controller

If you’re using a wired controller, just plug it in. You’re good to go. Scroll down to Testing the Controller to make sure everything is working correctly.

If not, you’ll need to connect the wireless Xbox 360 controller with the receiver plugged into your computer. To do so, first turn on the controller by holding down the Xbox Guide button in the center of the controller, and wait for the green backlight to turn on. Afterward, press the connect button on top of the wireless receiver (Figure B) until it begins to flash green, then press the corresponding button on your controller (Figure C).

The pairing process should only take a few seconds, after which the light on the receiver will return to solid green and one of the four corners around the controller’s Guide button will light up (Figure D). If you’re still having issues, check Microsoft’s support page for more help.

Testing the controller

Once the necessary software is installed and the controller plugged in or synced, it’s time to test the connection. Open the Start menu on your PC, click the search menu, and look for “game controllers.” You should see an option that reads: Set up USB game controllers.

Xbox controller test

To ensure that your controller is functioning properly, test it by turning the joysticks, pulling on the triggers, and pressing all the buttons. If everything is working correctly, you’ll see the corresponding action highlighted in the app. Your system should reflect when every button is pushed. If it’s reflecting all of your actions, it doesn’t matter which area of the screen is lighting up.

If your app isn’t fully pairing with your controller and certain buttons aren’t lighting up the screen, you can check out Xbox’s support website for detailed troubleshooting tips.

Start Playing

To keep things convenient, the company labeled the Xbox 360 controller as the default setup for most new PC games. You likely won’t need to play around with settings or set up key bindings to start playing.

We recommend that you check that your controller is fully paired while you load your game because if the two devices aren’t connected, the game won’t recognize your controller. Some newer games support quick and convenient controller changes; Users can switch to 360 controllers, even if they’re in the middle of playing.

The wired Xbox 360 controller is USB, so using it for PC gaming is easy–but things get a bit more complex if you have a wireless controller. Let’s take a look at how you can enjoy wireless gameplay on your PC while minimizing the headaches.

The Three Prong Path to Wireless Freedom

When it comes to wireless Xbox 360 on Windows you have three options: the expensive and easy way, the cheap and somewhat frustrating way, and the grey market middle ground. If you’re sitting at your computer desk and not across the living room, for example–then you might just want to skip the whole hassle, just buy an official wired Xbox 360 controller for $27, and be done with it. A wired controller is pure plug and play with no hassle–but if you absolutely must have wireless play at your PC, you’ll need to buy a USB-to-wireless adapter.

That’s right, you can’t just connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to your PC using Bluetooth, or anything like that. Xbox 360 controllers use a propriety 2.4Ghz communication method that need a specific a USB adapter made for the Xbox 360 controller–no substitutes allowed.

RELATED:How to Use an Xbox 360 Controller On Your Windows PC

This is where the decision making process gets slightly complicated. Microsoft doesn’t sell the adapter by itself. They sell it in a bundle with a wireless controller–but if you already have a wireless controller, you probably don’t want to buy another one just to get the adapter.

If you want to buy the adapter separately, you can, but you’ll either be buying a Chinese knockoff product, or an official adapter that’s been separated from its kit by a third party. Picking from these potential options is the most important step in the project.

The Official Bundle: Expensive, But Headache-Free

If you don’t mind paying a premium (and potentially buying an extra controller you don’t need) then the most frustration-free and guaranteed-to-work method is to buy the official Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows bundle. Despite the Xbox 360 getting a little long in the tooth, you can still find official Xbox 360 “For Windows” controller packs both on the shelves at many electronics retailers, online, and directly from Microsoft. And hey, if you only need the USB receiver, you can always sell the controller on Craigslist and try to get your money back.

RELATED:I Got Scammed by a Counterfeiter on Amazon. Here's How You Can Avoid Them

The MSRP of the official bundle $59.95, and you’ll usually find it at close to that price at places like Best Buy. If you can find it cheaper from a reputable retailer, then by all means jump on it. If you must shop on Amazon, be sure you’re buying a product marked “fulfilled by Amazon” and be ready to return it if it ends up that the product is not an official model. (Remember, “fulfilled by Amazon does not guarantee a genuine product.)

The Dubious Aftermarket Clones: Cheap and Doable, but a Headache

On the opposite side of things, you’ll find piles upon piles of knockoff USB receivers sold separately all over Amazon, eBay, and other big online marketplaces. Typically, you’ll find them ranging in price from $7-15 and they’re either flawless clones that are indistinguishable from the official adapter dongle or they’re terrible knockoffs that will give you a headache setting them up.

The official Microsoft Xbox 360, seen above left, is always branded as “Microsoft” on the front and says “Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows” on the back. The knockoffs are almost always branded “X360”, seen above right, and usually say “PC Wireless Gaming Receiver” or a variation on the back. Note the purposeful omission of any copy or trademarked names like “Microsoft”, “Xbox 360”, or “Windows”.

In general, we don’t recommend buying these. But if you already have one, we’ve got your back–scroll down for detailed instructions on getting it up and running, even when Windows doesn’t want to place nice.

The Official Orphans: A (Nearly) Sure Bet, as Long as You Can Find One

In between the expense of buying an official Xbox 360 Windows controller bundle and cheap $7 eBay specials, you’ll find a sort of grey market happy medium if you’re willing to make a small gamble. If you look on Amazon and eBay, you’ll find hundreds of official Microsoft brand Xbox 360 PC dongles that have been separated from their controller mates.

Your best bet is to look for listings that include not just the dongle (with proper markings and tags, as we saw above) but also include an official driver CD and booklet. While you don’t need either of those things to use the controller (Windows will download the drivers automatically), it’s generally a good indicator that the listing is legitimate. It’s not really profitable (or legally wise) for companies to go to the extra hassle of creating fake Microsoft support materials.

Just remember that Microsoft does not officially sell these separately, so if you’re buying one separately, you are taking a bit of a gamble. While we recommend you carefully study each listing, read reviews, and make sure there is a good return policy for whatever online retailer you’re using, we can say that we’ve had great luck purchasing these official adapters for $15 a piece off Amazon (specifically fulfilled by RushHourWholesalers). Every one we’ve ordered has shipped with a driver disc, documentation, and is identical in terms of branding, construction, and labeling to those found in the official bundle.

How to Install an Official Microsoft Adapter

If you’ve purchased the official bundle, got your hands on an official adapter, or just happened to have purchased a knockoff adapter of exceptionally good quality, then the installation process is incredibly simple.

On Windows 8 and above, you can simply plug the adapter right into your PC. A few seconds later, it will be automatically detected and Windows will install the drivers. You can confirm this by opening up the Windows Device Manager–press the Start button and type “device manager” to access it. Look down at the bottom of the hardware list for the Xbox adapter entry:

On Windows 7 and earlier, you’ll be prompted by the “Add Hardware” wizard to add the USB adapter. You can select “Install the software automatically”, and if your version of Windows has the drivers the process will continue automatically. If you don’t have the drivers already on your PC, you can either use the included driver disc or download the appropriate drivers from the official website here.

Once the adapter is installed (and you’ve confirmed its presence on the Device Manger list) you can jump down the section “Pairing Your Controllers to Your PC”.

How to Install a Knockoff Adapter

If you’re stuck with one of the lower-quality knockoffs, we’re sorry–by comparison, it’s a huge pain. Fortunately for you, it’s not hard to get them up and running as long as you know the completely non-intuitive way to do it.

First, plug your device into your computer. We recommend plugging it directly into a port on the back. If you must plug it into a USB hub, make sure it’s a powered hub. We’d also recommend picking a port that you’ll be able to leave the device more or less permanently attached to. Whenever you unplug it, you’ll need to repeat the annoying steps we’re about to outline–so you’ll want to leave it plugged in at all times, if you can.

Let’s emphasize that last point again: with the majority of aftermarket adapters we’ve come across if you unplug the adapter you have to repeat the annoying multi-step installation process. In my experience, it was worth the extra money to buy another genuine adapter just to avoid this hassle.

With the adapter plugged in, navigate to the Windows Device Manager. Press the Start button and type “device manager” to access it. Look under “Other Devices” in the list of devices under the entry for your computer.

We know it’s quite nondescript, but unless you have multiple Unknown Devices on your PC, that little “Unknown device” entry is your knockoff Xbox 360 controller adapter. Right click it and select Properties.

Select the Driver tab in the Unknown device Properties box and then click Update Driver.

When prompted to select whether you want Windows to search automatically or for you to browse your computer for the drivers, select “Browse my computer for driver software”. Don’t worry, you don’t actually need any drivers, as they’re already included with Windows. (On the off chance that yours have gone missing, however, you can download the drivers here.)

You’ll be given the option to search for the drivers in a location you specify or you can pick from a list of device drivers already installed. We want the latter, so select “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.

Scroll down the list until you see “Xbox 360 Peripherals”. Double click on it.

Note: These screenshots are from the setup process on Windows 8 and 10; under Windows 7 it’s possible that you may need to look under “Microsoft Common Controller” instead of “Xbox 360 Peripherals”.

On the next screen, select “Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version 6.3.xxxx”. Click Next. When prompted by the driver update warning, click Yes. The hardware signature of the knockoff doesn’t, in fact, match the driver signature, but it will work fine just the same.

You’ll receive a confirmation that the device was installed properly.

If you get the error “Xbox 360 Controller for Windows / This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)”, then you’ve accidentally selected the drivers for the controller, not the receiver. You’ll need to go back into the device manager, delete the erroneous entry and repeat the tutorial from the start.

Back in the Device Manager, scroll down to the bottom and double check that there is now an entry for the Xbox receiver:

If you see that entry, you’re in business–it’s time to add your controllers to your PC.

How to Pair Your Controller(s) to Your PC

The only thing left to do at this point is to sync your controller to the new wireless receiver. If you’re an Xbox 360 user porting some or all of their old controllers to their PC, then this process will seem very familiar, as its only a hair different than the process of pairing controllers with the actual Xbox 360.

Press the button on the receiver (the light will blink) then, immediately after, press the connect button on your wireless controller (located at the top of the controller just above the battery pack).

The green ring of lights on the Xbox controller will rotate around and then the controller will signify which controller it is by lighting up the appropriate quadrant (the wireless receiver will support up to 4 controllers for those rare multiplayer PC games).

One final step you may wish to take, even though it’s not required to get the controllers to work, is to download the 360 for Windows controller software, it adds in a really convenient function: you can tap and hold the Xbox logo on the controller to get a battery status check.

That’s all there is to it! Before you dash off to play, however, we strongly recommend bookmarking, Evernote clipping, printing, or otherwise saving this tutorial if you have an aftermarket dongle. As we mentioned at the start, if you unplug the receiver you have to go back into the Device Manager and install the drivers again.

    Hello Thx for reply.

I've tried these instructions and went so far to add legacy peripherals and the xbox 360 driver isn't available.

All I see is model in the list and the option to select have disk; but I don't have the drivers I need on my PC or disk.

I need to get the device drivers so that they show up on the list to select.

    Can you provide a link?

I've tried searching Microsoft's website with no luck.

All I can find are third party driver sites which I can't trust.

    Thanks again for you help.

    It is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Brad;

I tried different USB ports and neither of them work.

My adapter doesn't light up and can't be recognized.

I know that it used to work with Windows 7; but never did get it to work with Windows 10.

I would hate to have to buy another adapter to find out that one won't work either.

Is there anyway I can manually install the drivers needed; so I can manually add the device?

As I have seen on various tutorials on You Tube.

i found this on another thread.... please try the following:

For a wireless adapter for your Xbox 360 controller, look under your device manager.
Then look under unknown peripherals or something that is unknown.
Click update driver / browse computer for driver software.
Select let me pick a list of available drivers.
Find Xbox 360 wireless receiver for windows (newest version).

That should get your controller to connect to the wireless adapter.

    360 wireless receiver xbox usb

Wireless Receiver for the Xbox 360 from China has arrived.

Wireless Receiver for my Xbox 360 controller (Sometimes referred to as a wireless dongle) from China is one of those tools that has become more and more relevant in the gaming industry with console ports and couch co-ops. Unlike other types of electronics from China; Where it was inferior or simply was nothing more than a piece of plastic or an identifier chip saying what it was but it did nothing at all. This adapter from china does work! But it needs the right drivers!

betamax video tape - S-Config.ComVideo tutorial fallback mirrors:

In case you have no-script enabled or for some reason cannot see the title video on this website. We have provided direct links for these videos. For more information about the standards we use on this site click here if you would like to know more.

Now for those who don’t know what this little guy does; It allows you to hook up ANY wireless Xbox 360 Controller which operates on a wireless 2.4ghz range to your PC (Up to four devices just like the original Xbox 360) which is useful for playing a lot of Steam games which are coming. Most of those games all about Couch-Action multiplayer action. This wireless receiver is a nice device to have considering Xbox One is released making the hardware of the 360 obsolete. And when hardware becomes obsolete it gets very cheap! We paid for 4 Xbox 360 controllers on eBay for around $55 with shipping included. Which isn’t bad at all!

Read on if you would like to know more about this little $8 unit!

Original wireless receiver versus the Chinese version.

This is a summary and differences between the two Xbox 360 receivers that you will find out on the internet.

This is the official Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver. Note the Microsoft Logo on the casing and the tab on Cable.

    Official Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver.

It should be noted it is next to impossible to find an OEM Microsoft 360 Wireless Receiver unless you are willing to fork out $50-60 for a controller and receiver pack. Used game stores such as GameStop will not keep these around and often will not even have a receiver. GameStop treats odd-ball hardware devices by only offering a few pennies to buy it off of someone. When official receivers show up on eBay. they are typically going anywhere from 15-20 US dollars because they are no longer in production thanks to the Xbox One. This can also be verified by checking the hardware ID in the device manager. USB hardware ID for the official receiver is: USB\VID_045E&PID_0719

This is the Chinese Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver which has no indication it came from Microsoft.

    China Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver

Chinese receivers will come in cheaper packing (if any at all) and will not say the word “Microsoft” anywhere on the unit or package. This allows them to sell these units in this country without them getting pulled for various intellectual property-related laws (And don’t think Microsoft won’t go after people for this! They still throw cease and desist letters to people giving out MS-DOS disks for god’s sake!) You’ll also get a CD and that’s about it! No real instructions in the packaging itself. This can be verified by checking the hardware ID in the device manager. USB hardware ID for the third party china receiver is USB\VID_045E&Pid_0291 for windows 7 or USB\VID_05C6&PID_9244 for windows 10.

Newer models of this knock-off receiver may also end up with an ID of USB\VID_045E&PID_02A9.

Where to purchase the China Wireless Xbox Receiver.
    • eBay – Ignore the Malaysian listings as it generally takes three times longer than China. The Malaysian sellers use dirty tactics to get the lowest price such as place a fish hooks at a penny to get top listings. Generally 8 to 10 dollars USD with shipping from China.
    • NewEgg – More for North American buyers who don’t want to mess with eBay. Prices are 9 to 13 USD plus possible shipping.
    • DX – A little more expensive than eBay in the 12 to 14 USD range. DX, however, may be more suitable for international buyers.
    • Alibaba – This auction site initially was not friendly to US buyers with Paypal. But they are about as good as eBay. I would only suggest this site for people that are looking for bulk purchases of the third-party receiver.

    Wireless receiver woes:

Let us go through some of the issues encountered with the Chinese Wireless receiver.

    Toss this CD, it’s pointless!

Fake Chineese Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver Driver CD

An issue with the Chinese receiver is that although it gives you a driver-CD. That CD is useless unless you have windows XP 32-bit you minus well just throw the thing away! So if you have a Windows 7 or Windows 8 box. The Screen Below is the typical screen you will get! Now for those who do not believe me or just want to see what china packed onto this CD. I have uploaded an archive of my disc which can be downloaded. Click here to access this file. NOTE: This was only uploaded for archival purposes and will not be used in any way during this tutorial. Also, as of 10/5/2017, this archive has been re-compressed to .7z A.K.A 7-zip for better compression. WinRAR can extract 7z files as well.

No driver update, can’t point to the CD because the OS supported is Windows XP. Crap!

Driver not found to the XBox 360 Wireless Controller

This is because the China Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver is emitting a different hardware ID than the Microsoft one. USB\VID_05C6&PID_9244 for Windows 10 to be exact. Because of this Windows has no clue what to do about this and Unlike a wired 360 controller or dance pad where it will simply pull its drivers off of Windows Update. It cannot do anything with our Chinese receiver.

So how do we work around this problem?

Simple, we force the Microsoft driver down its throat!!!

Acquire the software directly. OR NOT!!!

    Update 06/02/2020:

    Xbox redirected.

Apparently, my link to download the driver from Microsoft’s site is now getting redirected to their Xbox One accessories page. Completely obliterating one’s ability to find the Xbox 360 original drivers within their site. Lucky you that we host our own binaries huh?

Anyhow, here’s another link for the Xbox 360 drivers. Microsoft will probably move it again to convince you to buy an Xbox One controller. But at least I shall -try- to keep up with the links.

    Direct download:

This site prides itself on being the one-stop blog for everything you could need in a guide. However, as our usual disclaimer, you should always run a virus checker over any executable you get from a third-party site including my own. Do not trust anything unless it comes from the source manufacturer. We will keep things clean as long as the site owner is alive but you may never know! Also, note that to preserve file space and for simplicity’s sake, all versions have been compressed into a single solid 7-Zip file. You may use WinRAR or 7-Zip to extract the files in this archive: Download softwareThis archive which is approximately 8Mb in size contains both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Xbox 360 receiver driver. Click here to download the archive or click on the icon to the right of this paragraph to begin. Links will continue to be provided here in the event the company discontinues support.

    Extract files:

7-zip extraction and folders. The first thing you will want to do is get a copy of WinRAR or 7-Zip. Any package that is capable of extracting 7-zip files. In this tutorial, we shall extract it to C:\chinaxbox\ . You can extract it anywhere you like just keep a note as to where you extracted these files while reading this tutorial.

    Notes about the archive:

In the following example above we will be extracting everything in the C:\chinaxbox\ folder. This archive contains the following files:

    • Xbox360_32Eng – This is the 32-bit version of the Xbox Driver for those working with Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 8 32-bit, and finally Windows 10 32-bit.
    • Xbox360_64Eng – This is the 64-bit version of the Xbox Driver for those working with Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8 64-bit, and finally Windows 10 64-bit.
    • Xbox360_Mod_XP – This version is made specifically for Windows XP 32/64 bit and Windows 7 32/64. Windows XP Tutorial listed here.

The very first thing we will be doing is (with administrative rights of course) launch that installation file you have downloaded to begin installing the drivers into Windows 10. Check the box to “I accept this agreement” and click the Next button to continue.

Install .NET from microsoft. You may or may not see this window depending if there was another application on your computer that requires this dependency. In windows 10 the .NET Framework 3.5 can be automatically downloaded. If for some reason it does not automatically download for you you may click here to go to Microsoft’s website for .NET Framework 3.5. If you are working offsite for any reason you may wish to download the Offsite version of .NET Frame 3.5 by clicking here. Otherwise, you can let Windows 10 take care of it for you by simply selecting “Download and install this feature” and permit it to do so. The only reason why this program requires .NET Framework 3.5 as a dependency is due to the battery and player status tool that comes with this program which you shall see later in this blog.

Windows 10 Installing device.Upon plugging in your USB cabling Windows 10 will attempt to find the driver for these Chinese controllers. It, of course, will not find anything and label the device as “Unknown Device.”  If this were a true Microsoft OEM receiver it would have found your driver and installed it ending the tutorial for you. however, due to differences in product ID, we have to install this driver manually.

Note: Windows 10 by default will have the newer driver v10.0.10240. The software we just installed inserts into the list. Syncing the Xbox China receiver to the Xbox 360 controller.

The steps here will seem simple for people who have owned an Xbox 360.  When looking at a lot of forums this is also the most overlooked step. Resulting in people thinking that they got a bad receiver when in all reality it is perfectly fine!

Xbox 360 Wireless Pairing on PC.

    1. Turn on your Xbox 360 Wireless Controller. It should have all four corners of the controller flashing indicating that it’s on but it cannot find a device to connect to.
    2. Press the button on the wireless receiver and it will begin flashing.
    3. While the wireless receiver is flashing, press the “Sync” button on the front of your Xbox 360 Controller as shown in the picture above. You know it will begin to Pair the device if you see the green LEDs on the start button of your controller move in a Clock-Wise Fashion
    4. If you have a solid LED light in the upper left-hand corner indicating player 1. Congratulations! Your Xbox 360 controller is now paired up to your wireless receiver. If the LED’s spin in a clockwise circle but then returns to all lights flashing that means that it cannot find your Wireless receiver to pair up to.

Special notes about android devices: If you are hooking this up to an Android box. the controller will still flash but at a slower speed. This is because the Android OS has no official drivers for the Xbox 360 Wireless controllers as for the date of this publish your compatibility will vary from game to game under Android

In windows 10 we will first select the Devices tab. then we select Connected devices and finally select the devices and printers link to open up something that we are more familiar with in the older tutorial.   Let us see if windows can see and test the new joystick that we installed. More information about differing driver versions within Windows 10.

Wait a minute S, you’re telling users to install an older driver designed for windows 7 when windows 10 has it built right in. Why even install the files you provided for Windows 10?

Xbox receiver on Windows 10 - Driver Selection. Let’s assume that you did install the “latest and greatest” driver that came built right into Microsoft. Will it work? Yes, but you will be missing two things.

Xbox Receiver for Windows 10 - Generic Controller bugThe first thing that you’ll notice upon using the new wireless receiver driver is all of your Xbox 360 controllers are listed as generic HID-compliant game controllers. They are not listed as true Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers anymore. In about 80 to 90 percent of the games on the market, this will not affect a thing! There are however some games that are built around the Xbox 360 controller and will map all of the keys for you if it so happens to find a true controller that came from Microsoft. This bug in the new driver is an annoyance and not a deal-breaker.

    Battery gauge feature.

Xbox receiver - XboxStat.exeThe second bug deals with the functionality of the center Xbox button. Using the old driver when you download and install the software. Let it install Net 3.5. Normally it places a file known as XboxStat.exe as a startup program for Windows which will listen through the Chinese wireless receiver for any command from that button to give the user information such as what controller is connected, battery life, and more. This is a nice feature but once again it’s not a deal-breaker. The lights will flash on your controller when the battery is getting low. If you don’t care about this and you want to save about 3mb of memory by not installing the older driver. Then the new driver should suit you just fine.

    Summary of driver confusion:

As for exactly why Microsoft neglected to put these tools into their OS could end up with a lot of different answers. That they wanted to keep the drivers simple? That perhaps they didn’t bother to talk to the hardware development side of Microsoft before releasing their OS? Either way, it goes everyone thinks that a bigger version driver means better but you have to take into consideration that this is Microsoft the same company that skipped a version number in their OS because they didn’t like the way it sounded.

Version numbers no longer have the integrity they used to.

    Notes for critical errors.

On 02/01/16 – We had one of the Chinese wireless receivers die on us after years worth of service bouncing back and forth between devices. This can even happen to a Microsoft OEM Receiver as the only thing that is really inside your dongle is a microchip and that’s it. The Chinese versions don’t even have a fuse along the 5-volt power lines and in my case, the regulator that reduces the voltage from 5.0vdc to 3.3vdc for the chip to use was fried out.

Upon going into the device manager we found something similar to this showup.

Dead Xbox receiver in device managerWhen you try installing the drivers you may receive this description for your Chinese wireless receiver. This is not a good sign. What your system is telling you is that it cannot get a response from the micro-controller inside. You can try a different computer/USB port but if it keeps saying the same thing then it’s a sign of serious hardware failure of the receiver. Read onward to confirm this error.

    Check Hardware ID for troubleshooting.

Always verify vendor and Product ID for support reasons.Note: Always check the device ID of your hardware by right-clicking on the unknown device and clicking on properties. You can then click on the Details tab and then click the drop-down-box for hardware ID to view it. Microsoft products begin with USB/VID_045E . Please note that VID_045E is Microsoft and this value may differ when looking it up..

As mentioned earlier in this blog when we discussed the two different receivers out there on the market:

    • USB hardware ID for the official receiver is: USB\VID_045E&PID_0719
    • USB hardware ID for the Chinese receiver is USB\VID_045E&Pid_0291 or USB\VID_05C6&PID_9244 depending on your Windows OS build.

A dead giveaway that the receiver died is the Hardware ID in the device manager underneath the properties of the USB device and it will display USB\VID_0000&PID_0000 or USB\VID_???? depending on the operating system. This means your computer can’t even establish communication with the ID chip. Without an ID chip then the drivers will not install and you should begin the process of returning your defective dongle to the vendor for a refund/exchange. Although we hope that your adapter does not come to this death. We thought it would be important to document and troubleshoot this because the third-party china receiver has no 250mA breaker fuse and thus are more prone to possible DOA from USB power spike upon plugin.

    Windows release builds 2004 woes.

    Windows Build 2004 complete.

We have an update for you. As of 06/01/2020, Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows build 2004 out to random users throughout the world. Not everyone is getting the 2004 build.

    Unknown device hell.

For those who have not received the 2004 build; Consider yourselves lucky because not only did it mess up the Chinese Xbox Receivers out there but 1000’s of other pieces of hardware too! It basically marks your hardware as unknown even though it behaves like it installs the driver perfectly fine. We have built a separate blog dealing with this issue right here:

Windows 10 build 2004 vs. china xbox receiver.Windows 10 build 2004 vs. the Chinese Xbox receiver.

This article will go into detail on how to get your Chinese receiver back up and running. it essentially follows the same steps as our XBCD tutorial for getting Original Xbox controllers into windows 10 by disabling the TestSigning security feature. feel free to read more about it here. We’re probably not going to mainline this tutorial because of the great divide about windows 2004 and Microsoft has even acknowledged the issues that users are having and states that they are working on it. If it disappears after Microsoft is done then there’s no need to mainline this tutorial. But if Microsoft deems this driver as blacklisted then we will look into streamlining the tutorial in with this one.

    • OGV – Link – The fallback codec for older PCs and Linux USB stick OSs. 1st generation web video streaming based on Ogg-Vorbis encoding.

We noticed a lot of people were saving my tutorials onto the hard drive. Completely understandable. You may not trust this site being around in the next few months. Or perhaps you are going into a part of the world where the internet isn’t fantastic. Or perhaps you are a seller of these receivers and are looking for a document that you can print up and attach to your product. You can now download a PDF of this article for you to have, print, and read on your hard drive

    Final thoughts.

Besides the driver headaches explained above. And now the aforementioned 2004 build. It behaves just like the Microsoft OEM version. The receiver works across our house which is identical to my Xbox 360 console wireless length. So no real complaints about connectivity or lag issues. For $8(USD) it’s not a bad deal.

The great thing with having the wireless receiver is they give you a few feet of cable so you can place the wireless receiver anywhere giving you a possible better reception around the house than keeping it inside of the Xbox 360 console. We hope you find this article useful and hopefully it will keep a few Xbox 360 controllers in circulation. If you have any problems you may leave it in the comments below. Please include the OS and hardware ID of the controller you are using.

    Server protect you.

Xbox 360 controller offers you great convenience during gaming. Playing video games through the keyboard and mouse is annoying. Because you have to remember many keys and functions, the immediate response is not possible and finally, your hands remain busy and you feel uneasy. In such a situation, connecting an Xbox to your PC is a great option. But, it may be a costly option. Furthermore, it is a challenge to connect an Xbox 360 controller to a PC without the receiver.

You should remember that there is no way to directly connect the Xbox controller to your PC without a receiver. An adapter is needed to recognize the connection.

Moreover, you cannot pair it via Bluetooth. The reason is that the Xbox has a different frequency than Bluetooth on a PC.

Apparently, this connection is not feasible. But, do not worry we will tell you an alternate solution.

How To Connect Xbox 360 Controller To PC Without Receiver

There are three options that can be used to connect an Xbox 360 controller to your PC without a receiver.

    1. You can connect through wires

The wired option is the easiest way to connect your Xbox to your PC. The setup process is quite simple and hassle-free.

First of all, find the USB port on your PC. Next, insert the controller into the USB port.

The next process will be automatic. The controller will be automatically recognized by your PC and it will start downloading the relevant drivers. Your PC will indicate the success of the connection.

So, you can now play the games through your Xbox 360 controller.

    2. Purchase Microsoft Xbox Package

This process is a little bit complex and needs many accessories. Additionally, it is an expensive method. If you do not have an Xbox already then go for this option.

Purchase the Microsoft Xbox package for windows. It contains all the accessories and is compatible with each window version. Unlike traditional controllers, the Microsoft Xbox package does not pose any problem. You can connect it wirelessly to your PC.

So, all you have to do is to buy this bundle if you want a hassle-free setup.

However, if you already own an Xbox then you may hesitate to buy a new one. The solution is that you can sell your older Xbox.

    3. Purchase an adaptor

The third option is to purchase an adaptor/receiver to connect your wireless Xbox to your PC. The Microsoft adaptors come within the Microsoft Xbox package and are not available separately.

So, you have to buy from another party. But, do some research on quality. Because they are replicas of the original Microsoft adapters. The quality may not be that good but fine to use.

So, you have to be careful while purchasing an adapter from a third party. Another option is to buy an orphaned Microsoft Xbox adapter.

Connecting Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver to Your PC

Different windows versions require different steps to install Microsoft Xbox on PC. However, the overall process is simple and easy. In the next section, we will guide you about the installation process.

    1. Installing Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless receiver on windows 8 and 10

Windows 8 and 10 do not pose any difficulty in the installation process.

You just need to plug the Xbox receiver into your PC. It will immediately detect the device. You do not need to perform any function. Just sit back and wait.

Your PC will automatically start downloading the relevant drivers. Once the installation process is completed, you can start playing.

For further surety, you can confirm the successful connection by following some simple steps.

    • Go to the start menu
    • Type ‘Device Manager’in the search box
    • You will see ‘Xbox 360 wireless receiver for windows’

This is an indication that you have successfully installed the Microsoft Xbox receiver on your PC.

    1. First of all, you connect the adaptor to the gadget driver.
    2. Next, insert the USB drive.
    3. You will see a wizard on the screen. It will tell you to move into your operating system.
    4. If your windows already have relevant files, you need to click on the automatic installation. It will proceed further and the installation program will run successfully.
    5. In case, your windows do not possess the files then you need to follow some more steps.
    6. One easy option is the CD included in the Microsoft Xbox package. Insert the CD into CD ROM and download the drivers on your PC.
    7. The other option is to install the drivers directly from Microsoft. All you need to do is go to Microsoft’s official website and find the drivers for the Xbox receiver and start downloading.

You should confirm the success of the connection. The verification process is the same.

    • Go to ‘Device Manager’ on your PC and look for the drivers whether they are installed or not.
    • If they have been installed, you will see the command ‘pair controller to PC’.
    • Click on this and your Xbox controller will be connected to your PC.

Installing A Third-Party Xbox Receiver on Your PC

You need to follow some more steps for installing a third-party Xbox receiver. The process is complex because you are connecting a duplicate of the Microsoft Xbox receiver on your PC. But, it is compatible with your PC and works well.

The process is the same on all windows versions. Carefully follow the following steps.

    1. Install the Xbox drivers on your PC

The first thing is to install the necessary drivers on your PC. It includes the following steps:

    1. Locate the USB port on your PC and insert the adapter into the USB port
    2. Go to Windows search box and then to Device Manager
    3. Click on the sub-category “Other Devices”
    4. Choose the option “Unknown Device” and click on “Update Driver Software”
    5. This will lead you to a pop-up window that will say “Browse my Computer”, select it.
    6. Click on the option “Let me pick from a list of device drivers”.
    7. You will see a full list of devices. Choose “Xbox 360 peripherals”
    8. Another list will show you all the models, you should select the latest one and click on the “yes” button to start the installation process.

    2. Connect the Xbox controller to your PC

In this step, you synchronize the Xbox controller to your PC.

    1. First of all, click the “pair” button on the receiver and connect the button to the controller.
    2. Next, press the “guide button” present on your controller.
    3. If the backlight turns green, it means your controller is connected to your PC and is ready to play.

You can also verify the connection. Follow these simple guidelines:

    • Search the “game controller” on your PC.
    • Look for “Set up USB game controller”.
    • Check whether it is functioning or not. For this, you should play via triggers, pads, and sticks.
    • If each of your moves is detected then the connection is successful.
    • Your controller is ready to play games.

Attention:You should remember that unplugging the receiver will create a fuss. Because the second time connection will require following all the above-mentioned steps. So, be careful and do not unplug your device.

However, it may be disconnected automatically or accidentally. You should remember the above-mentioned steps as a precautionary measure.

Guide to Buying an Xbox Receiver

If you want to purchase an Xbox receiver, you can avail one of the following three options.

    The First Option

You can buy the original Microsoft Xbox package. It is available online and also in local electronic stores. The price goes up to $60. If you already possess an Xbox controller and just need the adapter or receiver, you can sell extra accessories online. This trick gives you a genuine adapter with no risk.

    The Second Option

The second option is to buy an orphaned Microsoft Xbox adapter. You can search on any online store or website. This adapter costs you just $15 to $20. But, one drawback is that you are not buying from a trusted seller. Moreover, it is not a sealed pack. So, you are not sure about its originality.

However, you should consider the following things to make your purchase risk-free.

    • Choose the adapter that comes with a driver disk and manual. Because there are almost zero chances of fake CDs and booklets. So, if it comes with a manual and driver disk then it is genuine.
    • Always go through the customers’ reviews. You will have an idea of whether the product is real or fake.
    •  Purchase from the seller which offers a refund or replacement policy.
    • Choose the one that is fulfilled by Amazon. This is not a surety of originality but you have the option to return the device if it is fake or faulty.
    •  Ask the seller for photos of the product. Compare the design and labeling to the original Microsoft adapter.
    • The back of the genuine Microsoft adapter reads “Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless for Windows”. While the front has the label “Microsoft”. It is a sign of an authentic product. If something is missing or extra, the product is fake.
    •  In this way, you can verify the originality of the product.

    The Last Option

If you are not willing to buy and sell then the last option is purchasing a duplicate adapter from a third party. Although, it is difficult to find a trusted dealer yet you can do it. They cost you less, usually 5 to 15 dollars. Duplicate adapters are available on electronic stores, Amazon, and other online stores.

One disadvantage is that they require a little more effort and time to connect with your PC. Look for the tag “X360 or PC wireless gaming receiver” on the synchronization button. The duplicate receivers usually have such labels
