I don't have my truck yet (on order soon), but I plan on adding a subwoofer under the rear seat. In my Wrangler, I added a Bazooka 6" DVC amped base cannon under the back seat because it is so slim. I cannot confirm it will fit under the RAM's yet but that is my plan, or maybe go with the 8" if possible. I ran the high inputs by splicing off the factory speaker wires. The unit comes with its own internal amplifier so is super compact and clean.
I really didn't have high expectations for it being a 6" and all, but it exceeded those hopes and then some. I have run a pair of 8" subs in a sealed box that didn't sound this good. Even with the Wrangler's top and doors off, it will thump strong enough to shake the mirrors.
These RAM's integrate so much of the truck's functions into the factory "radio" that unless you are really committed, you cannot swap it out with an aftermarket unit. You can, but it would be an interesting and costly road to travel.
Repeat Clayton Client Upgrades Ram 1500 Audio System
A repeat client from here in Clayton recently contacted Adrenaline Autosound for help in upgrading the audio system in his 2019 Ram 1500. The goal for the upgrade was to increase the system’s dynamic range, bass response and overall tonal accuracy. After inspecting the system, we realized it included an upmixer to drive the center channel. Armed with the tools and knowledge to handle systems like these, we set to work.
Factory Radio Integration
As we do with all car stereo systems with upmixers, we designed an upgrade path that would maintain the same number of channels as the factory system. To do this, we used a Wavetech Link8 active line converter to feed signals to a JL Audio TwK-88 digital signal processor. Once in the processor, we can change the equalization to suit the upgraded speakers we would install in the system.
Ram 1500 Audio System Amplifier and Speakers
The speaker upgrade process started with creating speaker mounting adapters with HDPE plastic. We mounted a set of Focal components from the client’s previous vehicle in the doors and added three Audiofrog GB25 2.5-inch midrange drivers to the left, center and right dash speaker locations. As always, the addition of foam coupling rings to the speakers ensures that their output is directed into the listening environment. We ran new 16awg JL audio speaker wire to each driver in the system, including the door speakers. It took some time and planning to get the wires through the rubber wire boot in the doors, but this level of detail is what our customers expect.
A four-channel Mosconi AS200.4 from the client’s previous system was assigned to powering the system subwoofer and the woofers in the doors. A Focal FDP6.900 powers the tweeters and the three Audiofrog midrange drivers. The Focal amp and the two signal processors are mounted to a panel that fits in place of the factory subwoofer on the rear wall of the truck. As you can see from the photos, we take great care in ensuring all the wiring for the system is routed cleanly. The equipment is mounted to the panel using spacers so all the wiring can be neatly concealed beneath each component. We use cloth or high-temperature automotive-grade tapes to bundle and secure the wiring in place as it runs through the vehicle. This process ensures that there won’t be any buzzes or rattles as the truck travels down the road.
We constructed an enclosure for a single JL Audio 13TW5 13.5-inch subwoofer that resides under the rear seat to deliver clean, clear bass for the system.
Audio System Tuning and Delivery
With all the equipment mounted, the last step was to work through our tuning process. We used our RTA and scope to set the system up to deliver a realistic and detailed soundstage across the windshield that sounds great from both front seats. The client was thrilled with the sound of the system and loved the way we integrated everything. If you are in the Raleigh area and are interested in upgrading the audio system in your car or truck, we invite you to visit Adrenaline Autosound in Clayton and meet with one of our Product Specialists. Midlothian Client Upgrades Ram 1500 Audio System
A client from Midlothian dropped into Extreme Audio to research his options for a 2013 Ram 1500 audio system upgrade. We let him have a listen to our Scion xB demo car and its Audiofrog GS speaker system. He loved the sound right away. Back in the store, we talked about the features and philosophy of the Alpine Restyle head unit replacement solutions. He liked that idea as well. With a plan in place, we scheduled an appointment to do the installation.
OEM Speaker Upgrades
The 2013 Ram is an excellent platform for a sound system upgrade. It has 6×9 speakers in the front and rear doors, and small midrange speakers in the corner of the dash. We removed all the factory speakers and installed a set of Audiofrog GS690 6×9-inch components in the front of the vehicle. The woofer bolted right into the door, and we used the multipurpose mounting adapter that comes with the kit to install the tweeter in the dash. A set of FastRings foam baffles sealed the speaker to the interior door panel to improve midbass performance and prevent buzzes and rattles.
We installed a set of Audiofrog GS693 three-way speakers in the rear door. The GS693 has a pair of fabric dome tweeters to provide smooth midrange and high-frequency performance. Again, the rear speakers bolted right up without any hassle. We used another set of FastRings on the rear speakers.
Alpine’s Type S subwoofer was a great fit for under the seat thanks to its shallow mounting depth.
The client wanted good, solid bass in the truck. With the large 6×9 speakers in the doors handling midbass so well, we knew we would need a robust solution for sub-bass. The client agreed to our suggestion of an Alpine SWS-10D4 Type-S Series subwoofer in an enclosure that fits under the left side of the rear bench seat. This full-size sub can handle up to 500 watts and sounds great. Once in place, the enclosure doesn’t take up any usable floor space in the truck and is nearly invisible.
The small size of the Alpine amplifier allowed it to easily fit under the seat.
We installed one of the new high-efficiency, ultra-compact Alpine X-A90V five-channel amplifiers under the driver’s seat to power the system. The amp will provide the front and rear speakers with up to 75 watts each, and a healthy 500 watts to the single subwoofer.
We ran Stinger power up to the battery and used Stinger interconnects to feed front, rear and subwoofer signals from the source unit to the amp.
Alpine Restyle Solution
Once you see one of the Alpine Restyle systems in a truck, you can’t un-see it. The large screen and perfect integration alone usually seal the deal. We showed the client the what the Alpine X009-RAM would look like once installed, talked about the mapping features and explained the easy-access controls. He loved it!
After the kit was installed in the truck, we confirmed that all of the factory steering wheel audio controls functioned perfectly and checked the vehicle integration menus. The iDatalink Maestro interface lets the client adjust the climate controls and monitor the factory safety systems that come with the truck.
Custom Rear Vision Camera
During our discussion of the Restyle features, we mentioned that it had an input for a rear camera. The client really liked this concept and started asking about camera options. We showed him the Alpine HCE-C305R Active View Camera system and explained how it recognizes people and objects moving behind the vehicle and highlights them with yellow and red boxes so he would know to be cautious. We mounted the camera in the tailgate handle and installed the control button on the dash. The button lets the client choose from four different camera views quickly and conveniently.
Ram 1500 Audio System Upgrade
After configuring the amp and testing everything, it was time to turn this Ram 1500 audio upgrade back over to the client. He was thrilled with the sound and loved the way the Restyle looked in the dash.
