The Austin Spurs have officially announced their schedule for the 2021-2022 season. And while San Antonio’s developmental affiliate will return to the familiar confines of the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park, the G League has introduced a brand new structure.

Rather than hopping right into the regular season, the G League will split every franchise into four regional pods for an expanded Showcase Cup, a 14-game tournament concluding with the annual Winter Showcase from December 19-22.

Each organization will play 12 games before the top team from each region alongside the four teams with the next-best records compete in the single-elimination Winter Showcase for a shot at the Showcase Cup. The remaining teams will play a pair of consolation games.

After the Showcase Cup, team records will reset, and a 36-game regular season will begin, ensuring each team has played exactly 50 games. Only the top six teams from each conference will qualify for a spot in the NBA G League Playoffs.

Although the G League Ignite and the recently announced Capitanes de la Ciudad de México will compete in the Showcase Cup, neither club will participate in the 36-game regular season. The Austin Spurs will play the Capitanes in back-to-back games on November 14 and 18.

Following the additions of the Capitanes, Birmingham Squadron, and the Motor City Cruise, the G League will officially expand to 30 teams during the 2021-2022 season. The Spurs will square off with the Squadron for the first time on January 23.

Austin kicks off their season on the road against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on November 5 at 7:30 PM CT. They will then play their home opener versus the Ciudad de México Capitanes on November 14 at 5 PM CT, their first home matchup since March 8, 2020.

And since Josh Primo and Joe Wieskamp will presumably spend most of their first go-round learning the tools of their trade in the G League, that should provide Austinites with an excellent opportunity to get a live look at San Antonio’s 2021 first and second-round picks.

San Antonio recently promoted head coach Matt Nielsen to an assistant role on Gregg Popovich’s bench, and they have yet to name a new head coach for their G Leauge program. And with less than two months before the season starts, we’ll likely get an announcement on that front soon.

The Spurs will announce their promotional and broadcast schedule at a later date. And while single-game tickets go on sale later this month, you can purchase ticket packages by visiting austin.gleague.nba.com/ticket-central or emailing [email protected]

Austin Spurs

H-E-B Center at Cedar Park is the home of the Austin Spurs, the NBA G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs. Since Austin’s inaugural season in 2005, the team has won two G League championships (2012, 2018) and advanced to the playoffs nine seasons.

The G League is the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory. A record 53 percent of players on NBA rosters at the end of the 2020-21 NBA season had played in the G League.

Austin has had 45 NBA Call-Ups in team history as of the end of the 2021 season. Two former Austin head coaches are currently NBA head coaches (Quin Snyder – Utah Jazz, Taylor Jenkins – Memphis Grizzlies).

Austin Spurs games offer affordable, fun family entertainment and the chance to see current and future NBA players develop their skills. For more information or to inquire about tickets, please visit austinspurs.com.
