Snapper Inc.

American manufacturing company of lawn-care and snow-removal equipment

Snapper, Inc. was an American company, formerly based in McDonough, Georgia, that manufactured residential and professional lawn-care and snow-removal equipment. Snapper was known for its high-quality red "rear-engine" riding lawnmowers that are capable of standing on-end for storage or repairs, and for its invention of the first self-propelled rotary lawn mower.

Currently Snapper produces two lines, their main line Hi-Vac and Ninja models sold at dealerships, as well as a different line of re-badged mowers branded Snapper sold at department stores. The latter share nothing in common with dealership sold models.

History[edit]

The company began in 1894 as Southern Saw Works. Later, in the 1940s, as the McDonough Power Company, it was acquired by William Raymond Smith, who changed the company's direction when the lumber industry declined. Smith recognized a need for lawn mowers and patented a mowing blade.[1] With this, he created the "Snappin' Turtle," named so for the way it snapped the grass and for its turtle figurine on the top front of the first model. While mostly known for their lawnmowers, Snapper also built tillers and snow blowers.

Brought under the umbrella of Fuqua Industries in 1967, sales grew from $10 million in 1967 to $260 million in 1987.[2]

In 1976 McDonough Power Equipment registered the trademark Snapper,[3] and adopted that name as its identity. Producing an assortment of yard-care tools, Snapper had facilities in McDonough, Georgia, Beatrice, Nebraska, and Fort Worth, Texas.

In 1991, Snapper announced the closing of the Texas and Nebraska factories; the Georgia factory was expanded to absorb the production. Fuqua President Lawrence Klamon explained the closures and consolidation by saying that most of the production from Fort Worth was going East of the Mississippi River.[citation needed]

In 2002 Snapper was acquired by Simplicity Manufacturing,[4] which was then acquired by Briggs & Stratton in 2004. Since then the Snapper brand name has been added to products such as weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, among others.

In 2014 Briggs & Stratton announced the plan to close the Snapper plant in McDonough, Georgia and move production to Briggs & Stratton's factory in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, saying it made sense to fold the Georgia plant's Snapper operations into the Wauwatosa factory near the company's headquarters where engineering, product research and other departments support manufacturing.[citation needed]

In 2019 Briggs and Stratton announced a plan to restructure the company. This included divesting the final product divisions and concentrating on providing engines and stationary generators. The plan includes selling the Snapper and Snapper Pro lines along with the other brands Ferris, Simplicity, Billy Goat, and the pressure washer and portable generator business, with these sales expected to be complete by the end of 2020.[5]

Briggs exited bankruptcy by selling all assets to KPS Capital Partners. As a result, they did not sell off[clarification needed] the brands including Snapper.[6]

Belt Sizes for Snapper Lawn Mowers

By Diana K. Williams

A mower won't function properly if the wrong belt is installed.

Whether you’re looking for the belt size for a Snapper riding mower or a self-propelled walking model, you first have to know the type of belt you need. Some Snapper models have drive belts that propel the mower the forward, while others are only equipped with a deck belt to turn the blades. Knowing your mower’s belt length is important, but when you order, you’ll need the belt’s part number to ensure you’re getting the right one for your mower.

Rear Engine Deck Belt

When the cutting deck belt on your your mower has become frayed, it’s time to replace it. Snapper’s 73 1/2-inch belt fits rear engine riding models with decks 25 to 30 inches wide in its series 7 through series 14 mowers, equipped with steering wheels. This belt also fits walk-behind models in the 0 through 6 series, equipped with handle bars and a 33-inch deck. This double V-style belt is 1/2 inch wide, and Snapper carries it under part number 7022252. Local automotive parts dealers carry this belt under a different part number, but can cross-reference it to ensure you get the right one.

Hydrostatic Drive Belt

Snapper’s LT100 series of hydrostatic drive mowers are equipped with a belt that transfers power to the transmission, making the tractor go. The belt for LT100 mowers, including models CLT23460, LT24520 and SLT24520, is 85.4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Snapper carries it under part number 7035500. This belt is the same size for mowers with 46-, 50- and 52-inch decks -- it runs from a pulley on the transmission, at the rear of the tractor, to a pulley near the front of the tractor, rather than the width of the deck.

Zero-Turn Deck Belt

Zero-turn mowers have large decks and require longer deck drive belts than standard riding mowers with decks of the same width. Snapper models 355Z, 360Z and 400Z take a deck drive belt 151 1/4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide on both 44- and 50-inch decks. Snapper carries this belt under part number 5023256. When you remove this belt, use the lever on the idler pulley to release the tension. This allows the belt to slip off the pulleys.

Self-Propelled Drive Belt

Snapper self-propelled mowers have a V-style belt to transfer power from the transmission to the wheels so the mower does most of the work. When this belt becomes worn, the mower no longer propels itself forward. The drive belt for model SP105 is 31 1/4 inches long and carries Snapper part number 703374. The SP105 has an adjustment feature in the drive-control housing for tightening tension on the belt. If your mower isn’t propelling properly, try adjusting the tension before replacing the belt.

Old School Snapper Rear Engine Riding Mowers

6 hours ago The first riding lawn mower I ever used was one of those Snapper rear engine riding mowers. These rear engine riding mowers were some of the most popular back when I was growing up and mowing my family’s lawn. These were old school machines that were much better than the push type that made for a long day mowing. Trust me, I have used both.
