How to Change the Oil on a Ariens 6.5 Hp Lawn Mower

By Turner Anderson

Change the oil at the beginning of every mowing season.

Changing the oil on a Ariens 6.5 hp lawn mower ensures the internal engine parts are properly lubricated during operation. Oil degrades over time, which can lead to premature engine wear if not changed at the recommended intervals. Ariens 6.5 hp mowers use a Briggs and Stratton Quantum series engine. Briggs recommends changing the oil after the first five hours of use, and then every 50 hours after that. Used SAE30 oil under normal operating conditions during the mowing season.

Start the lawn mower to run the remaining gas out of the fuel tank. Draining the gas will prevent fuel leakage when you tip the mower on its side. Turn off the mower and disconnect the spark plug by pulling off the spark plug boot. The spark plug and boot are located at the front of the engine. Disconnecting the spark plug will prevent the mower from accidentally starting while you change the oil.

Tip the mower on its side, so the air filter and carburetor side is facing up. The air filter assembly is located on the right side of the lawn mower engine, if standing behind the mower. The oil drain tube will be facing downward. Place the oil drain pan underneath the oil drain tube.

Remove the oil dipstick from the oil tube. Oil will begin to drain out of the tube into the pan. Once all of the used oil has drained, use shop towels to wipe up any excess oil around the oil tube or on the ground.

Tip the mower upright and insert the funnel into the oil fill/drain tube. Pour SAE 30 oil into the tube. Periodically measure the oil level with the dipstick until the oil reaches the full mark indicator on the dipstick. Once the oil has reached that level, remove the funnel and reinstall the dipstick. Again, wipe up any excess oil around the fill tube.

Tips

  • Check the oil level in your mower before and after every use to ensure there are no leaks.

Warnings

  • Always make sure the gas has been completely drained before changing the oil. If the gas is not drained, it may leak out onto the ground and possibly start a fire.

Correspondingly, what kind of oil does a lawn mower take?

SAE 30- Warmer temperatures, most common oil for small engines. SAE 10W-30- Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold-weather starting, but may increase oil consumption. Synthetic SAE 5W-30- Best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.

Likewise, how much oil goes in a Ariens lawn tractor? Ariens SAE 30 Engine Oil - 20 oz.

Consequently, can you use regular motor oil in a lawn mower?

SAE 30 motor oil is commonly recommended for use in a lawn mower engine, but the safest best is to use the type of oil your lawn mower manufacturer recommends. Often 10W-30 or 10W-40, the same motor oil types that are used in vehicles, can also be used in a lawn mower.

Can I use 10w30 instead of SAE 30 in my lawn mower?

Yes; you can make use of it. But there are other factors you need to consider. These include temperature and the engine. Older engines can use the SAE30, while the 10W30 is for modern engines.
