Fidelity OTC’s manager has settled in well, leading to an upgrade in its Morningstar Analyst Rating to Bronze from Neutral across share classes.

This strategy is well-suited for three-year manager Chris Lin. The portfolio invests at least 80% of its assets in stocks trading on the Nasdaq exchange, meaning it leans heavily towards technology and healthcare companies, sectors where Lin made previous stops as an analyst. Before this charge, he produced strong results at Fidelity Select Computers and Fidelity Select Semiconductors and also served as the team’s technology sector lead, giving him a front-row seat to companies that play a big role here. Fidelity’s tech and healthcare teams, which Lin uses heavily for company-specific insights, remain industry-leading and well-positioned for success.

Lin has played to his strengths. Technology stock-picks have driven Nasdaq Composite benchmark-beating results during his tenure. In a market where the tech sector has thrived, the portfolio has benefited from Lin’s focus on durable growers and hasn’t relied too much on momentum to get ahead. Lin plies a more risk-conscious approach than his predecessor, with firmer position size guardrails in place and caution regarding some of the market’s highest fliers. It was encouraging to see the strategy hold up a tad better than the benchmark in early ’s pandemic-induced downturn.

The makeup of the portfolio no longer looks quite as risky as it once was. At points during the past decade, the portfolio held as much as 30 percentage points more in the tech sector than the category benchmark, the Russell Growth Index, making it vulnerable in a tech sell-off. Today’s leading tech companies span the tech, communications services, and consumer discretionary sectors, across which the fund held only 10 percentage points more than the category benchmark as of September While Lin has demonstrated an edge in picking winning tech-related companies, seeing consistent success across a wider range will help engender more confidence in it.
