Turn Your Phone Into a Radio Scanner

Radio scanners serve a handful of niche audiences. You may have had people tell you about some of the crazy or interesting things they've heard on their scanner, and it sounds like it might be fun to have one in your car. However, you could upgrade your head unit or install a couple of premium speakers for the same price.

If the cost of buying a police scanner is a big stumbling block, you'll be happy to hear you have a more affordable door into the world of radio scanners right in your pocket. It's your smartphone. In between sending texts and checking Facebook, you can use your phone to listen in on a variety of radio scanner streams.

But Phones Aren't Radios

Phones aren't radios. Not even smartphones are radios. Some smartphones include secret built-in FM radios, but if you're interested in listening in on police and emergency services broadcasts, that won't do.

Other components in your phone can be referred to as radios, at least technically, like a cellular radio or a Bluetooth radio, but that still isn't what you're looking for. These components can only send and receive information in the specific bandwidths allocated to cellular communications or used by Bluetooth devices.

You can no more receive a police dispatch transmission with your phone than you can tune in to an FM radio broadcast, even if you happen to have a phone with a built-in FM receiver.

How to Turn a Phone Into a Radio Scanner

To turn your smartphone into a radio scanner, you need an app and either a mobile data plan or access to a Wi-Fi signal.

Since your phone can't receive over-the-air (OTA) transmissions from sources like police radios, you'll rely on radio buffs to receive and then stream transmissions.

Apps are available for each major mobile operating system (OS), and they all work in the same basic manner. Instead of tuning a scanner to a local broadcast that interests you, you choose from streams available in apps that you download to your phone.

Among the many free and subscription-based scanner apps for iOS phones are Police Scanner +, 5-0 Radio Police Scanner, and Police Stream. If your phone is an Android device, check out the Police Scanner X, Scanner 911, and Broadcastify Police Scanner apps at Google Play.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to tap into local streams or choose to listen in on streams from far distant places.

How Scanner Apps Work

Radio scanner apps, which are also referred to as police scanner apps and phone frequency scanners, rely on networks of radio enthusiasts to provide thousands upon thousands of audio streams.

These enthusiasts have actual, physical radio scanners that they use to pick up local, non-encrypted radio transmissions. They also have the necessary equipment to stream audio sources over the internet and create online radio scanner streams. They do all the heavy lifting so that you can tap the touchscreen on your phone a few times and pull up about any kind of local radio transmission you want.

Although these programs are often referred to as police scanner apps, they usually aren't that limited in operation.

One of the main uses of these apps is to listen in on local, non-encrypted police and other emergency services communications. These apps provide access to emergency services communications, police dispatches, railway transmissions, other transit communications, and a whole world of other short-range radio transmissions.

Are Radio Scanner Apps Legal?

Legality is a sticky point because police scanners are legal in some places and illegal in others. It's important to check the laws in your jurisdiction before installing one of these apps. You may be charged with a crime if you're arrested and the police find a radio scanner app on your phone. A Google search can turn up your state's laws regarding scanner apps.

If you're brazen enough to use one of these apps in the commission of a crime, the consequences may be even more severe. For example, in Florida, intercepting police communications to assist in a crime or escape automatically escalates the severity of the crime.

As with many other things, the use of radio scanner apps is one of personal responsibility. If they're illegal where you live, you can choose to use one anyway. There's no way to track your usage, so you'll be fine as long as you don't get caught. However, if you are caught, and they are illegal, you'll find out quickly that ignorance of the law isn't an acceptable defense.

On the other hand, if scanner apps are legal where you live, you might have found yourself a new hobby.

nextradio-3

Your phone has been holding out on you.

Believe it or not, your model might have a built-in FM radio receiver. And you don't need to do any jailbreaking or violate any terms of service to use it. You just need the right app.

FM WTF?

Before we dive into the specifics, let me answer your inevitable questions: Why would phone manufacturers include an FM tuner and not tell users about it, and why bother with an FM tuner when countless apps can stream FM stations from all over the world?

The latter is easy: Streaming consumes data while a tuner does not. (Or, at least, not much -- see below.) Streaming also requires considerably more power than a tuner, meaning your battery will die more quickly.

Additionally, I've found that apps like TuneIn and iHeartRadio don't always have all my local stations. With a real tuner, I can pick up anything that's in range -- and enjoy compression-free audio to boot.

As for why phones have FM tuners at all, my guess is that Google's Android hardware specs include the feature, even if the OS itself doesn't offer any way to access it. And phone manufacturers probably don't see it as a big value-add, so they don't bother to develop or include a compatible app. Thus, the FM receiver remains deactivated.

Tune in radio

nextradio-2

Fortunately, there's a free app that can activate it for you: NextRadio. Before you install it, check the list of supported devices, which includes phones from LG, Motorola and Samsung, to name just a few. (Make sure to note the carrier as well. Although my Samsung Galaxy S6 ($86 at Amazon) is on the list, it's a Verizon model, and therefore not compatible.)

If your phone isn't on the list, there's no harm in trying the app. (If it doesn't detect an FM chip, it'll offer to let you stream stations instead.)

Assuming it detects the chip, there's only one other thing you'll need: an antenna, which can take the form of any wired earphones (or a stereo cable -- basically anything that plugs in and has a wire).

Fortunately, you don't have to restrict yourself to listening through headphones. The app lets you toggle the output to your phone's speaker. Alas, output can't be directed to a Bluetooth speaker.

NextRadio does consume a small amount of data because it retrieves station logos, album artwork and the like. If you want to operate it totally data-free, tap the Menu icon, then Settings > Interface > Switch to Tuner Only Mode.

Although NextRadio is free, it's ad-supported -- and there's currently no option to eliminate the ads. That small gripe aside, what could be better than unlocking a cool new feature you didn't know your phone had?

10 best radio apps for Android

There are a virtually endless number of ways to listen to music these days. You can stream them, listen to the radio, watch music videos, and the old methods (like vinyl) are still humming along as they ever were. Sometimes, though, people like to just hit play and let it go without having to manage every little thing like playlists, play order, or anything like that. Radio isn’t as popular as it used to be. However, it’s still a great way to discover new music and just chill out. Here are the best radio apps for Android right now.

AccuRadio

Price: Free (with ads)

AccuRadio is not as well-known as other radio apps. However, it happens to be good. It boasts over 1000 radio channels to tune into. Each channel is customizable by the listener. There are unlimited skips, a rating system, and you can ban artists and songs from your station. The result is a music station that eventually only plays stuff that you like. There are some downsides. There isn’t Chromecast support at the time of this writing. The servers also occasionally have some issues. However, aside from that, it’s a good experience.

iHeartRadio

It’s completely free to use (supported by in-streaming ads) which is another good bonus. For those who want it, iHeartRadio also comes with Chromecast and Android Wear support. You can get a slightly better experience for $5.99 per month. You can go All Access for $12.99 per month for even more additional features, including on-demand song playing.

Pandora Radio

Price: Free / $4.99-$9.99 per month

The venerable Pandora Radio is probably the most popular of all radio apps. The app made streaming random music mainstream and has enjoyed quite a bit of success over the years. Instead of focusing on specific stations, Pandora lets users create their own stations. You can make them around your favorite artist, music genre, or even song. Pandora does offer playlists to stream, but most people just create their own. You can also get a premium subscription to remove ads for $4.99 per month. You can also go for the full $9.99 per month for Pandora Premium and get on-demand song plays along with other features.

Radio Online

Price: Free / $4.99 per year

Radio Online is one of the more traditional radio apps. The app features hundreds of radio stations that cover all kinds of content that are ready for streaming when you want them. It includes both Internet-hosted radio as well as some FM stations that support online streaming. If you go pro, you can get some additional features, including live radio recording, a sleep timer, and more. It’s an efficient solution that does what it says it does. It’s also a good option for those who want something really simple without a bunch of extra stuff.

SiriusXM

Price: Free app / $10.99-$19.99 per month

SiriusXM satellite radio was one of the first really big pushes away from the standard AM and FM radio services. It features over 150 channels, including music channels, sports channels, and the venerable Howard Stern show. There are also three subscription models to choose from based on what kind of content you want to listen to. The app is slowly getting better and seems to be stable enough now to be enjoyable. It still has problems, so don’t expect a perfect experience on the app yet. It’s also cross-platform with many cars that have SiriusXM built-in. That means you don’t need Bluetooth or any other connection to use it in many modern cars.

Spotify

Price: Free / $9.99-$14.99 per month

Spotify is another music streaming app that has put a larger focus on radio-style streaming over the last couple of years. On top of having genre, mood, and artist-specific stations, Spotify also curates unique lists like “Worldwide top 50” and playlists with new music you specifically haven’t heard yet. The free version gets you pretty much all of the radio features with the $9.99 subscription cost removing advertising and giving you additional features. It’s one of the best out there. Apple Music actually has a compelling streaming radio service as well that honestly isn’t half bad. The service is also ramping up its podcast platform in a huge way so it’s good for talk radio these days as well.

TuneIn Radio

Price: Free / $9.99 per month

TuneIn Radio contains a more varied supply of radio stations that includes music of all kinds, sports, comedy, talk radio, news, and many other types of media. The free version comes with over 100,000 stations in total along with several million podcasts. If you go for the premium version, you can also get live NFL, MLB, and Barclays Premiere League games, audiobooks, and the removal of advertising. The price changes based on what region you live in, but it’s an overall fantastic radio service. It’s not great for music, but it’s one of the great radio apps for other interests.

XiliaLive Internet Radio

Price: Free

XiiaLive Internet Radio is not as popular as other radio apps. However, it’s still full of features. On its own, it contains 50,000 live radio stations which should be more than enough for most people. There are also organizational features that let you save your favorite stations. It also includes themes, data management features, and some more power user features like adding your own radio station URL link, an equalizer, and Bluetooth options. The app comes free or paid, but the service is free to use overall.

Local radio apps

Price: Free with ads (usually)

A lot of AM and FM radio stations have gone to the Internet and broadcast both over the radio waves and over the Internet waves. Many of those radio stations have dedicated apps where you can stream their stuff 24/7 and also engage with the radio station in other ways, including social media, giveaway info, podcasts, and whatever other promotions that station may be running. To be perfectly honest, most individual station apps aren’t overly great, but they have been improving over the years. They are worth a look if you only listen to one radio station.

The ability to utilize FM radio is awesome thank you for bringing crystal clear sound on my iPhone I would recommend this app to folks that also may listen to On line Listening

Amazing 😘

I downloaded five radio apps to try out and keep just one. This was the first one i tried out and was amazed how easy it is to use, how great it works and mostly how clear it sounds. I love that it has a real radio dial and how quick it moves. You are the best. Ps after trying this one i didn't have to try the other four and quickly deleted them ❤️❤️😘😘

Amazing, but there are a couple problems

The app is perfect accept I can’t change the temperature to farenheight and some stations don’t load at all.
