How to Change a Faucet Handle

By Cecilia Harsch

Change your faucet handles for something more modern and appealing.

A broken faucet handle on a bathroom or kitchen sink can make it difficult to turn the water on and off. When an acrylic decorative handle breaks, the sharp edges could cut your hand. A broken handle on a single-handle faucet makes it difficult to use. Fortunately, there are both universal and manufacture-specific parts available to change your faucet handles. You can even change the style to match the decor of your bathroom or kitchen.

Look for the water shutoff valves beneath the sink. Turn the valve handles clockwise until tight. If you cannot access the shutoff beneath the sink, turn off the main water supply where it enters your home or at the meter.

Pop the decorative cap off the handle on a two-handle faucet. Some single-handle vanity faucets also include this decorative cap. Look for a small slot along the edge of the cap and insert a small flat-head screwdriver. Lift off the cap to expose the handle screw.

Remove the screw holding the handle to the faucet stem. Remove the small setscrew from the base of a single-handle faucet. Lift off the handle.

Install any adapters supplied with your replacement faucet handle. Depending on the style, you may need to place an adapter over the faucet stem before affixing the new handle. Adapters attach with setscrews.

Place the new handle onto the faucet stem and secure it with the supplied screw. For a single-handle faucet, secure it with the setscrew.

Snap the decorative cover onto the top of your replacement handle, if applicable, and restore the water supply.

How to Replace a Tub or Shower Cartridge to Fix Your Faulty Faucet

Troubles with your tub and shower faucet can be surprisingly easy to fix. If you struggle to turn the faucet on and off or control the temperature, it's likely that your shower faucet cartridge needs to be repaired or replaced. Once you shut off the water and remove the handle and escutcheon, you can quickly determine whether the cartridge for your single-handle tub and shower faucet is a cartridge, ball, or disk type. Before you replace your shower cartridge, note that mineral deposits from hard water could be the cause of your faucet issues. If you see deposits when you disassemble the faucet, soak the cartridge in vinegar to clean it before reattaching. Otherwise, a damaged cartridge might require you to repair or replace a certain part. Manufacturers make cartridges of varying designs, so take the cartridge with you when you shop for replacement parts. If the damage is more serious, you might need to replace the entire cartridge. Follow our steps below to learn how to replace a shower or tub cartridge to keep your faucet running smoothly.

A universal faucet handle is another option if the store doesn't sell your particular brand. Shower knobs are made from many different materials, and you should try to find some that match your other fittings in your bathroom, such as the showerhead and taps. Brass, plastic, and chrome are common materials.

Besides, are shower valves universal?

They are all universal and all Delta Shower Trim Kits will fit every single one of these valves.

Also, are shower handles interchangeable? First, you absolutely CANNOT mix manufacturers on trim and rough-in valves. In fact, even within one manufacturer, they have many valves and the trims are not interchangeable. Shower sets are not always sold as separate trim and rough.

Then, what are shower knobs called?

Showerhead — An output devise that delivers water to the shower. The valve controls the flow. Single Hole Faucet — As the name implies, these faucets require a single hole for installation.

Do I need a new shower valve?

Don't assume you can simply install a new tub/shower faucet over an existing valve. So if you're replacing your shower and tub faucets, some planning is required. However, it's not too complicated once you know the basics: Most trim kits require a specific model valve from the manufacturer who makes the kit.
