Vans such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offer greater payload capability, and the Transit has a steeper base price than some rivals. Overall, though, this Ford shines as a top choice in its segment.

What's New for ?

The Ford Transit gets a host of upgrades for the model year. All-wheel drive is now available, and passenger and cargo vans get exterior updates such as a new power-sliding door. The van gets a new and improved powertrain lineup, and it also adds standard driver-assistance features such as forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. The Transit also benefits from interior updates such as new grab handles and vents. Finally, a crew van joins the Ford Transit lineup. It can carry five people in two rows of seating, and it's built for owners who want to move larger crews and their gear to a job site.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The base-model Ford Transit cargo van T comes with a generous selection of standard features, and we think it will be a great fit for many buyers. This van rides on inch steel wheels, and it comes with exterior features such as power-adjustable sideview mirrors and a split swing-out rear door for easy cargo access. A four-way adjustable driver's seat and a manually adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering column are on hand to help you get comfy behind the wheel. The list of standard equipment includes amenities such as Bluetooth connectivity, dual USB ports, and air conditioning. Additionally, all Ford Transit vans come with driver-assistance features such as lane-keeping assistance and lane-departure warning. We'd include the optional blind-spot monitoring ($) for safer lane changes. That addition brings the total cost of the Transit cargo van T to $36,

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Ford's Transit is offered with two powertrains. The base engine is a naturally aspirated liter V-6 that provides horsepower and lb-ft of torque. There's also a turbocharged liter V-6 available; it's the only engine to carry over from the model, and it generates horsepower and lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired with a speed automatic transmission, and buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The Transit is capable of towing up to pounds, and it can accommodate a payload of up to pounds. The Mercedes Sprinter offers more robust payload capabilities. In our testing, a Transit with the turbocharged V-6 made it from zero to 60 mph in seconds. That makes it quicker than a Nissan NV that we tested; that van completed the sprint in seconds. The Transit's suspension is tuned to deliver a forgiving ride quality that you'll appreciate during daily commutes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Full-size vans such as the Transit are exempt from federal fuel-economy standards. As a result, this van hasn't been tested by the Environmental Protection Agency. As is the case with many full-size vans, the Transit isn't exactly a leader in fuel efficiency. In our time with this Ford hauler, we logged 17 mpg on our mile highway test route with the turbocharged V

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Ford offers the Transit with a variety of roof heights and wheelbase lengths, and this allows you to tailor the cabin size to fit your needs. The Transit passenger wagon seats up to 15 passengers. The van's cabin design is slick and contemporary, taking cues from the Ford Explorer. The Transit's interior is quiet at highway speeds, shielding passengers from road noise.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The base Transit is equipped with features such as a four-speaker sound system, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, and a inch multi-function display. All models come with a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows your passengers to enjoy easy connectivity. The options list includes an inch display screen, integrated navigation, Sirius XM satellite radio, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Ford Transit hasn't received an overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, Ford has equipped this van with driver-assistance features that can help to prevent accidents. Key safety features include:

Ford Transit

It isn’t hard to see why the Transit is America’s most popular full-size cargo van. Having replaced the long-running Ford F,   E-series for the model year, the Transit offers a modern design with great technology and a surprising array of safety features. While it still uses a rear-wheel drive (RWD) platform, the Transit offers a more refined driving experience than the old E-series, but still offers the same degree of utility.

Several different variations of the Transit are available. There are two different wheelbases, three roof heights and three different lengths. There’s also a new crew van configuration for , which combines attributes of a cargo van and passenger van thanks to a second row of seating. The Transit also gets a new base engine for , and a new diesel. There’s also a new all-wheel drive (AWD) variant available. While it won’t quite turn the Transit into an off-roader, it will offer added confidence in wintry conditions, making it appealing for buyers in snowy climates.

The range-topping engine is Ford’s liter twin-turbo V6, which offers impressive horsepower and torque figures, allowing you to tow up to 7, pounds and haul up to 4, pounds. Pricing for the Transit starts at under $34,

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Generally thought of as a manufacturer of luxury vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has just as much credibility in the commercial vehicle world as it does in the passenger car world. While it’s been offered under both the Freightliner and Dodge brands here in the U.S., the full-size Sprinter sold here today is offered only as a Mercedes. And while you might be inclined to assume the Sprinter is a pseudo-luxury van, it’s actually quite mainstream, with a starting price of around $34, — right in line with that of the Transit.

The Sprinter was all-new for and is available in three different lengths, two wheelbases and two roof heights. A 4-cylinder gas engine and a 6-cylinder diesel are both offered. The diesel is available with AWD — otherwise the Sprinter we get here in the U.S. uses RWD.

Like the updated Transit, the Sprinter offers a healthy array of active safety and driver assistance features, plus an available in touch screen infotainment system. Altogether, the Sprinter and Transit are the two leading full-size vans on sale in the U.S. today. 

Ram ProMaster

The ProMaster is a little different than the other full-size cargo vans sold in the U.S. today. Based on the European-market Fiat Ducato, the ProMaster uses front-wheel drive (FWD), which gives it better traction in snowy conditions and a more carlike driving experience than competitors from Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan NSANY,  . Ram is also quick to point out that given the ProMaster’s fewer moving parts (due to its drivetrain layout), total cost of ownership is lower overall.

Thanks to its FWD layout, the ProMaster offers a best-in-class turning radius, which makes it easier to maneuver in tight urban environments. The ProMaster also has a strong value proposition, with a starting price of about $30, that undercuts the competition by a few thousand dollars.

Under the hood of every ProMaster is a liter V6 that offers a maximum payload of 4, pounds and a towing capacity of up to 5, pounds. The ProMaster comes in three wheelbases, four lengths and two roof heights, which makes it even more configurable than the Transit and Sprinter, although no AWD option is available.

Nissan NV

The NV is the most old-school of the four full-size work vans on our list. Sharing a lot of its components with the Titan pickup, the NV comes with either a V-6 or a V-8 engine. Two roof heights are offered, but only one wheelbase. The NV comes with a segment-leading 5-year/, mile warranty—two years or 64, miles better than that offered by its competitors from Ford, Mercedes and Ram. The NV is available in , and grades. Its standard V-6 makes hp and lb-ft of torque, while the V-8 offered in heavier-duty models puts out hp and lb-ft. Payload comes in at a maximum of 2, to 3, pounds, depending on configuration. Altogether, the NV is a value-oriented alternative to the three other full-size options. 

Ford Transit Connect

Now in its second generation here in the U.S., the Transit Connect is a smaller alternative to the full-size Transit. The Transit Connect got an update for the model year. While a diesel engine was previously announced, Ford changed its plans before the oil-burner went on sale, and a liter gas-powered 4-cylinder remains the only powertrain option. The engine puts out hp and lb-ft of torque, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Transit Connect offers standard precollision assist with pedestrian detection, wind stabilization, a (federally mandated) backup camera and built-in 4G LTE connectivity that can be used to create a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot, allowing you to use your laptop from the driver’s seat while outside of a job site (this technology is becoming ubiquitous and is also offered on the full-size Transit).

The Transit Connect Cargo Van starts at under $25,

Mercedes-Benz Metris

Despite being built for work duty, the midsize Metris looks a lot like a traditional minivan. Some cool features are available, like a driver attention monitor and crosswind assist. The Metris comes with one engine: a liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that powers the rear wheels and makes hp and lb-ft of torque. This means the Metris is a little more powerful than the FWD Transit Connect, but isn’t quite as fuel efficient. The Metris offers a maximum payload capacity of 2, pounds and a maximum tow rating of 5, pounds.

Pricing for the Metris starts at around $27,, which approaches full-size van territory. Still, if you’re after a reasonably sized cargo van with some full-size van attributes, the Metris might be the van for you.

Ram ProMaster City

Just like the full-size ProMaster is based on a European Fiat cargo van, the ProMaster City is sold overseas as the Fiat Doblo. As a result, this van wears quirky European styling. While it isn’t as efficient or as capable as the Transit Connect with which it competes, the ProMaster City hangs its hat on offering a good value proposition. It isn’t loaded with the latest technology and features, but the ProMaster City comes with a liter 4-cylinder engine making hp and lb-ft of torque. And with a starting MSRP of around $24,, the ProMaster City is pretty competitive when it comes to price.

Nissan NV

The most value-oriented cargo van offered in the U.S. today is the Nissan NV The NV shares its platform with the compact Nissan Sentra sedan, and therefore offers FWD, efficiency and carlike driving dynamics. Pricing is a big selling point for the NV, as it starts at just under $24, and tops out at right around $26, Suffice to say, there aren’t many options offered on this small van. Like the bigger NV, the NV comes with an impressive 5-year/,mile warranty, which beats the competition by two years and 64, miles — especially enticing if you plan to put a lot of miles on your van in a short amount of time. Under the hood is a basic liter 4-cylinder engine. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard for , and could come in handy by allowing drivers to use their favorite mapping apps when making deliveries. Altogether, while it doesn’t offer many best-in-class features, the NV is a simple, efficient cargo van that can be had for a reasonable price.

As a dominant force in the full-size commercial van market, the Ford Transit is back and better than ever for its model. The Ford Transit has undergone several positive changes that increase its overall power and functionality, maintaining its status as a top player among full-size cargo vans.

Although the exact cargo specifications have yet to be announced, it’s possible that the Ford Transit may follow suit similar to its previous model. The Transit model is capable of a maximum payload capacity of 3, pounds and maximum cargo volume of cubic feet behind the first row. The model also consists of a maximum wheelbase of inches and a GVWR of 10, pounds with dual rear wheel.

The Ford Transit now comes equipped with a liter PFDI V6 engine, replacing the liter V6. No horsepower or torque numbers have been announced yet, but Ford says the new engine will see increases over the previous engine’s power. Another new option is a liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, which is expected to be more powerful and quieter than the liter turbo-diesel inline-five available in previous models. The liter twin-turbo V6 is still an option consisting of horsepower and pound-feet of torque, along with start-stop technology for improved fuel efficiency. The Transit’s engines are enhanced with a speed automatic transmission instead of a six-speed. The new transmission has a wider gear ratio range, which improves both acceleration and fuel efficiency.

All-wheel drive has been a highly requested feature from customers, and that wish has finally come true. Following in the footsteps of the 4&#;4 Sprinter van, the Transit now offers an all-wheel drive option. Depending on your needs on the road, the Transit’s all-wheel drive with selectable driving modes for a variety of muddy, rutty, and slippery conditions. The downside is that all-wheel drive will only be available on gasoline-powered Transit vans. Power-sliding doors are also available, which can be helpful when utilized as a shuttle van where the doors are opened hundreds of times a day.

The Ford Transit hosts an array of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, Lane-Keeping System, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert and Trailer Coverage, and automatic high-beams. 

Interior design is slick, with an optional 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a 4G LTE modem that provides Wi-Fi hotspot, with USB charging ports attached in every row of seats.

The Ford Transit goes on sale during the fall, so expect its release very soon. No official pricing information has been given out yet, but the model currently starts at an MSRP of $33,

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Mercedes-Benz has a renowned history of producing top-of-the-line vehicles, and it continues that tradition through its release of the Sprinter cargo van. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a full-size juggernaut that makes it one of the best cargo vans on the market, even without many changes to its newest lineup.

If the new Sprinter follows in its previous model’s footsteps, this full-size cargo van is a great choice for an array of heavy-duty demands, including furniture delivery, small moves, and junk hauling. Although no numbers have been revealed yet, the Sprinter has a maximum cargo volume of cubic feet on certain models. Additionally, the old Sprinter is capable of hauling up to 3, pounds of payload and towing up to 5, pounds.

Although General Motors decided to put an end to their compact cargo van lineup, the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana are back with improvements for their full-size cargo van models. Despite minimal updates, the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana are solid choices as long-standing, reliable workhorses that get the job done.

The Express and Savana vans provide a maximum payload rating of 4, pounds with an available maximum GVWR of 9, pounds. When equipped with the liter engine, the Express and Savana hold a maximum towing capacity of up to 7, pounds. Contractor, electrician, and plumber upfit designs are available choices for your storage needs. 

New power additions include an eight-speed automatic transmission for the liter inline-four LWN turbo-diesel Duramax engine, which offers horsepower and pound-feet of torque. Three other engine options are available, consisting of a liter V6,  liter Vortec V8, and liter CNG/LPG capable V8. The liter V6 engine gives out horsepower and pound-feet of torque, while the liter engines produce horsepower and pound-feet of torque.

Storage isn’t an issue with the NV Cargo, holding cargo space of up to cubic feet with a standard roof, or up to cubic feet with a high roof. The NV’s towing capacity maxes out to an impressive 9, pounds, which is more than enough muscle to deal with tough jobs. 

The new Nissan NV is built with a liter V8 engine that consists of Best-in-Class horsepower, pound-feet of torque, and paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The alternative is a fuel-efficient liter V6 that generates horsepower with five-speed automatic transmission. The NV is geared with heavy-duty suspension and the largest-in-class brakes for ensuring a safe and smooth ride.

Ford Transit review: A likable high-roof hauler

Ford offers a dizzying array of variants in this Kansas City, Missouri-built vehicle, from cargo- and passenger-specific models, to chassis cab and cutaway variants. Giving customers even more choice, it's also available with three different roof heights and in a trio of lengths. The Transit pretty much covers the market, meeting the needs of everyone from HVAC service technicians to adventure seekers who want to upfit their Transit to be the ultimate overlanding machine.

My tester is Ford's new-for crew-van model, which has both a large cargo area and seating for five people. This van also features a regular-length body and medium-height roof, but trust me, even though it's the "midsize" offering of the family, it's plenty big. I can stand up in it without clocking my head on the ceiling, and an air mattress should fit without issue if you dream of owning a s-style custom van. Sure, it's a bit of a step up to get into this vehicle, but it's not that bad.

Another welcome addition to the Transit for is available all-wheel drive, which affects neither the floor nor seat height. The system can send up to % of available torque to the front wheels as needed, giving this commercial-grade vehicle plenty of capability. Ford even offers a couple driver-selectable modes, one for mud and ruts as well as another for slippery conditions. Predictably, there's no sport mode, which is a bummer because I wanted to autocross this Transit. Not only would it turn a few heads snaking around those cones, it might turn in some pretty impressive lap times. Seriously, this van drives that well.

For , the Transit's base engine is a liter gas V6 that delivers horsepower and pound-feet of torque, pretty feeble figures on paper but that engine moves the Transit with shocking ease, at least when unladen. The new speed automatic transmission and limited-slip rear end make the most of every available pony. Quick to rev and unexpectedly smooth, it gives this van plenty of scoot off the line and at highway speeds. The gearbox is plenty responsive, quickly upshifting as you accelerate and easily dropping gears when it's time to boogie, but I wish it were a touch smoother. Ford's speed auto-box isn't always the most refined transmission. For customers who need even more performance, a twin-turbocharged liter EcoBoost V6 is also offered. It delivers hp and an even lb-ft of torque. Models equipped with that turbocharged engine feature a different grille design for enhanced cooling. The five-cylinder diesel option in previous model years is no longer offered.

As for dynamics, this house-size van is rather enjoyable to pilot, with unexpectedly crisp steering. In fact, for my money, it drives better and feels smaller than the Ford Ranger. Yeah, I couldn't believe it either, but this vehicle feels more buttoned down, responsive and enjoyable than the Blue Oval's own midsize truck, which can be pretty sloppy and disconnected. Empty, the Transit's ride quality is also amazingly good, firm and a tiny bit bouncy at times, but nowhere near as harsh as you might expect for something with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 9, pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3, pounds. Swing for the fences, and you can get a Transit with a GVWR of 10, pounds and with a max payload rating of 4, pounds. Interior noise levels are, as expected, somewhat elevated since it's basically just a giant uninsulated box on wheels. Load this baby up with freight and it should quiet down appreciably. 

Like other vehicles with a GVWR exceeding 8, pounds, this van is exempt from government fuel-economy ratings. In testing around town and on the highway, I averaged about 16 mpg empty, which is better than I expected. Of course, if you're hauling anywhere near this van's limits, expect a lot less.

Perched atop the Transit's elevated driver's seat, which is passenger-car comfortable and trimmed in a rugged-feeling fabric, this Ford gives you picture-window forward visibility. The expansive windshield and relatively thin roof pillars make it easy to see where you're going. Of course, a towering ride height doesn't hurt, either, allowing you to look down the road over the rooftops of practically every other motorist except long-haul truckers. When it's time to back this beast up, the sharp reversing camera and large outside mirrors with convex reflectors are surprisingly helpful. A degree camera is not offered.

Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff for those superb sight lines. The Transit's driving position is as awkward as a middle-school dance though not as cumbersome as the Ram ProMaster's seat, which is much more bus-like. Sitting so far forward means your left foot essentially rests above the wheel. This van's front footwells are quite narrow as a consequence, and the brake pedal is on a plane far above the accelerator's, which makes it ankle-twisting to operate. At least the brakes are beautifully weighted, with a nice, firm feel and no grabbiness at all.

As far as storage, let's just say the Transit has cubbies and cupholders and bins galore. Its interior has no shortage of places to stash things, with large pockets on top of the dashboard and additional nooks down low. There are huge bins above the front seats and more junk-carrying receptacles on the door panels. If you run out of spots to put things in this van, you're probably an undiagnosed hoarder. The rest of this van's interior is decidedly workaday, constructed of coarsely grained hard plastic. Easy to clean and surely hard-wearing, but luxurious it is not. Making this blue-collar vehicle a little more refined, the Transit can be had with a power-sliding side door and even swivel seats, more new equipment for Ford also offers some fresh exterior colors and a gallon fuel tank. 

My test Transit arrived fitted with Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system with navigation and an 8-inch touchscreen, an $ option. This is one of my preferred multimedia arrays, as it's easy to navigate, plenty snappy and supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and even Waze. A multifunction display with a 4-inch screen is standard if you don't feel like shelling out extra cash.

For , a range of new advanced safety features are standard. Every Transit now comes with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, automatic high beams and even lane-keeping assist. This van doesn't really wander (at least when there aren't stiff crosswinds), but that last item is still helpful, gently nudging the Transit toward the center of its lane should you drift too close to one of the lines. Other models come with blind-spot monitoring including trailer coverage and cross-traffic alert. Additional available features include enhanced active park assist, high-intensity discharge headlamps and even adaptive cruise control, which is smooth and attentive even if it doesn't work in stop-and-go traffic. As for protection, the Transit comes with your standard, three-year/36,mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The powertrain and safety systems are covered for five years or 60, miles, plus you get roadside assistance for the same amount of miles and time. This coverage is exactly the same as you get with a Ram ProMaster, and very similar to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, though it comes with a five-year/,mile powertrain warranty.

The Transit seen here stickers for $51, That price includes a smattering of useful options and a whopping $1, in destination fees. Is this high-riding van for everyone? Of course not. But drivers in need of a rig that can haul vast amounts of cargo or a Sunday school's worth of kiddies would be wise to consider one. This big boy is comfortable, drives well and is super versatile, especially now that all-wheel drive is available. When it comes to hauling, the Ford Transit is tough to top.
