Benefits Data Trust Employee Reviews

Average Call Center that claims it's not your "average call center"

Benefits Outreach Specialist (Current Employee) - Philadelphia, PA - December 1,

This is a well intentioned nonprofit organization that seeks to provide benefits application support for those in need and the elderly. I can't say that there weren't times that you felt some kind of fulfillment from helping others. However, these sentiments are overshadowed by a very poor pay, lacking benefits, and the work culture.

There are three main departments that the employees are split into: the tech people, the donor management people, and the lowest of them all, the benefits outreach specialists. The hourly pay for the BOS have gone up from $ to $, a laughable standard to from an economic perspective for someone working in the city. This raise was put into place after the organization received $ million from the Rockefeller foundation. I am in awe of the generosity provided by the upper management in throwing the scraps to the BOS. You are given 30 minutes of paid break and 45 mins of unpaid lunch hours. You are not working a full 40 hours, you are working hours weekly. There are monthly morning meetings that boast on how much funding the organization is receiving yet the median household employees that work here are highly likely to receive public benefits themselves due to the low salary.

BDT is the most corporate non-profit, as well as a walking contradiction. They provide distractions from tangible pros that can be offered to its employees such as higher salary, paid lunch hours, better health insurance, etc. by promoting pot lucks, employment resource groups (a camaraderie as well as an excuse to be off the phones due to shared misery), -

Outreach Specialist yearly salaries in the United States at Benefits Data Trust

Pretty decent place to work, with some downfalls.

Benefits Outreach Specialist (Current Employee) - Philadelphia, PA - September 9,

Benefits Data Trust is overall a great place to work. In terms of company culture, everyone is extremely supportive and encouraging. The fact that it is a non-profit and not a random sales job definitely has a positive impact to the job. You really do feel like you're helping people some days. The worst parts of the job as a BOS are the fact that you're constantly being monitored at every moment (likeseriously. You need to be really good at time management to succeed and pretty much be a robot). Even if you have a really upsetting client, you still have only like 5 minutes to recover and you're just supposed to jump back in. Also, the days can be pretty repetitive and monotonous. You're expected to take back-to-back calls. This job definitely isn't for everyone and you kind of have to be a tough cookie. That being said, there seems to be a lot of potential for upward growth at BDT (although maybe less now that they're expanding so rapidly). A lot of people in upper management started out as BOS, which is pretty cool. Working from home is also pretty great. I would say in general, the pay is all right. For the amount of emotional turmoil and stress that BOS go through, they should definitely be paid more because they are the backbone of the organization. Overall, I would give BDT a 4 out of 5. It is a pretty decent place to work compared to many jobs that I've had and I would recommend working here, with the knowledge that being a BOS definitely isn't for everyone and has little flexibility.

Pros

Work from home, benefits, management is generally very supportive and encouraging

Cons

Constantly monitored as a BOS, barely any break between calls, pay could be much better, clients can be very rude
