Red Dead Redemption 2: What Actually Happened In Blackwater
Although Red Dead Redemption begins after the events of the Blackwater Massacre, the heist-gone-wrong plays an important role in setting up the story.
Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2introduces the Van der Linde gang after a heist-gone-wrong. Even though the events of the failed Blackwater heist are never shown on camera, it plays an important role in setting up RDR2's story while also providing context into the strained relationship between gang members.
Red Dead Redemption 2 acts as a prequel to ’s equally-popular Red Dead Redemption. Rather than immediately stepping into the shoes of the first game’s main protagonist, John Marston, players first have the opportunity to experience the Western Frontier as Arthur Morgan. Similar to John, Morgan was adopted into the gang at a young age, with Dutch Van der Linde playing a fatherly role to both men.

By the time the original Red Dead Redemption takes place, the Van der Linde gang has long disbanded, leaving John to track down some of his former comrades. While the first game provides few details into the dissolution of the gang, RDR2 helps fill in the gaps, showcasing Dutch’s increasingly erratic behavior as the game progresses. This provides players insight into why the gang fell apart before Red Dead Redemption, and perhaps the initial turning point that indicated things were going sour was the gang’s failed ferry heist, which took place in Blackwater.
The Truth Behind RDR2’s Blackwater Massacre
Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplaybegins in , shortly after the Blackwater Massacre has already taken place. As players begin the main story, they learn that the Van der Linde gang had to recently leave Blackwater after the authorities chased them out of town. The gang manages to set up camp in Colter, an old mining town, before Arthur, Micah, and Dutch find a homestead - specifically, they run some O’Driscolls off the property and find the newly-widowed Sadie Adler, who becomes a major part of the gang from there on out.
As the story progresses, more details became available about the Blackwater heist, including the impact it had in intensifying tensions between Red Dead Redemption 2's characters. The Van der Linde gang learned a ferry would be making its way through the town carrying $, in bank money, and it was that money they were attempting to rob. While the heist seemed to be going to plan at first, it wasn’t long before the Pinkertons found the Van der Lindes, leading to a shoot-out.
Several of the Van der Linde members were injured in the fight, and both Jenny Kirk and Davey Callander succumbed to their injuries. Sean MacGuire was also captured, requiring the gang to rescue him later in RDR2's story. A young girl, Heidi McCourt, was also killed during the gunfight. The gang quickly realized they had to leave town if they wanted to evade the law, leading them to brave the snowy mountains of Ambarino before making it to Colter. Players can find various references made to the Blackwater Massacre throughout Red Dead Redemption 2 that sheds light on the ill-fated heist, but they never actually see the events play out on screen.

Red Dead Redemption 2: 15 Worst Things Arthur Morgan Has The Chance To Do, Ranked
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the ultimate cowboy fantasy, and as such, there is an incredibly dynamic honor system within the game. Players can make protagonist Arthur Morgan act in whatever manner they choose, either making him an honorable rogue or a villainous jerk-wad.
RELATED: Red Dead Redemption: Hilarious Arthur Morgan Quotes
Either way, the story is absolutely fantastic and handles Arthur's story with a deft touch. If you want to play Arthur as more of a villain than a hero, there are prime opportunities throughout the game to make him behave in the worst ways possible. Read on if you want to know how you can make Arthur out to be an abysmal person.
Updated September 4, by Amanda Hurych: Arthur Morgan's journey through Red Dead Redemption 2 is still timeless, years after the game's release. It is such a treat to revisit the engaging open world and live through the tragic adventure once again. And if you're still looking for ways to make Arthur an abominable protagonist, we've included a handful of dishonorable choices you can make when running into a few random encounters.
15 Loot Poor, Unlucky Individuals
During the course of Arthur's story, he'll come across poor, unfortunate souls whose only purpose in life is apparently to keel over when they're right in front of Arthur. From a man who stumbles out of the woods with grievous injuries to another who just wanted to clean his horse's hooves, several random encounters will present Arthur with a chance to loot the body of a freshly dead person. While it might seem like the logical thing to do, both the honor system and your conscience will think otherwise.
14 Ride Past The Woman Who Lost Her Horse
A woman whose horse died on the road will ask Arthur for a ride back to Emerald Ranch. Depending on where you encounter her, this can put you quite out of your way. However, ignoring her is definitely not the decent thing to do. Sure she's an utter stranger, but she is relying on Arthur for his kindness, and dropping her off not only gives you some honor, it also gives you an opportunity to hear some gossip on the secrets of Emerald Ranch.
13 Ignore The Man Who Got Bit By A Snake
Getting bitten by a snake can be a downright terrifying experience, as the howling, fearful cries of this stranger prove. Arthur can choose to pass this poor fellow by, dooming him to a potential death via snake venom.
Related: Red Dead Online Complete Guide And Walkthrough
On the other hand, Arthur can also offer to suck the venom out of the bite wound. Not only does this save the man's life, it also ensures you a free treat at a town's store. In a show of gratitude, the man you saved will offer to pay for anything you so choose.
12 Don't Assist The Woman Who Has Been Captured
While riding along the road, you may hear cries for help from a woman who has been tied up and placed on the back of a man's horse. Make saving her Arthur's business by racing after the horse, lasso-ing the culprit off of it, and then freeing the woman. It's the right thing to do, and leaving the woman behind is such a cold act on Arthur's part. Ignoring her pleas seems anithetical to the kind of thieves honor that Arthur naturally possesses.
11 Leave The Man Being Attacked By A Cougar
The growls of a cougar and yelps for help will alert Arthur to one man's precarious predicament. This stranger has found himself trapped in a tree as a cougar tries to claw at him from below. Leaving the man to his fate ensures him a painful death. And it costs practically nothing but a few arrows and bullets to save him. Plus, not only will Arthur have saved a life, he will have gained a cougar pelt as well.
10 Refuse To Help Captain Monroe
Arthur Morgan first meets Captain Monroe when he tries assisting Rains Fall and his people. While at the Native Americans' camp, Monroe asks Arthur to help him with a matter he's dealing with. As the player in charge of Arthur's actions, you can refuse to assist Monroe at all. Of course, if you do this, you're leaving Monroe to the mercies of his less-than-sympathetic fellow soldiers who want nothing more than to kick the Native Americans off their land. Captain Monroe clearly has a heart, and if you don't help him, you're proving Arthur Morgan doesn't.
9 Kill That First O'Driscoll
In the very first mission of Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur and his friends run into some of those O'Driscoll boys. One of them gets the jump on Arthur, but Arthur quickly takes the upper hand in the fight. Once it's over, Arthur has the choice to either send the man running or to outright kill him. Clearly, players who elect to have Morgan kill the O'Driscoll are aiming to have their Arthur be a tad on the evil side. However, this action is somewhat understandable given how deeply entrenched Arthur is in the outlaw life at this point.
8 Refuse To Help Rains Fall
Rains Fall is one of the most noble characters in Red Dead Redemption 2. He forms a kind of friendship with Arthur Morgan, but players who decide to ignore his pleas for help won't get the full benefit of their relationship. Rains Fall is a good man suffering through terrible times.
RELATED: Red Dead Redemption 2: Ways It Will Be Better On PC (And A Few Ways It Will Be Worse)
Helping him serves as part of Arthur's redemption arc. If you refuse to assist Rains Fall, you're essentially closing off a hefty portion of Arthur's story. Not only that, but it just feels wrong to leave Rains Fall hanging. It's not the worst thing Arthur could do, but it's clearly not the best.
7 Kill The Witness
A man recognizes Arthur Morgan while he and the gang are roosting near Valentine. He obviously knows of Arthur's criminal activities in Blackwater, and he runs off on his horse to report him. Players can catch up to this witness, and they are then presented with the choice of sparing the witness (while ominously threatening him) or killing him. The threat is sufficient to quiet the man, so killing him is quite literal overkill. This encounter could very well determine what kind of man the player wants Arthur Morgan to be for the rest of the game.
6 Kill The Guards During The Train Robbery
A successful though risky train robbery punctuates the monotony of Red Dead Redemption 2's prologue. After robbing the train, Dutch leaves Arthur to decide the fate of the hapless guards who were supposed to protect the train and its belongings. These men are unarmed and were only doing their job. There is an honorable way to deal with them by just packing them back on the train and sending them on their way. The dishonorable method of dealing with them is to shoot them in cold blood. It feels worse than dealing with the O'Driscoll in the same manner.
5 Refuse To Help Sadie
Arthur Morgan has the chance to help out his friends at various points in the game, but one of the most important times to be a good pal is when Sadie asks for Arthur's assistance in dealing with the O'Driscolls. Sadie ends up being one of Arthur's allies, even more so than Dutch, the man who Arthur gave all his loyalty to. By refusing to help her, Arthur is denying aid to a person who stands by him at the very end. Not only will players be ensuring that Arthur is a bad person, but they will also miss out on Sadie's tale of revenge against the O'Driscolls.
4 Do Not Assist Mary Both Times
True, many players feel like Mary is not deserving of Arthur's help. Mary Linton, Arthur's old flame, comes to Arthur for assistance twice in the course of the game, even though she rejected his romantic advances because he was an outlaw.
RELATED: Red Dead Redemption: Quotes From The Games That Will Stick With Us Forever
But she is clearly in desperate need of Arthur's help, and if Arthur chooses to ignore her, his callousness and cruelty are blatantly apparent. By going on the missions meant to help Mary, you learn about the depth of emotion both Arthur and Mary share for each other even though they never ended up together.
3 Shoot Animals
As typical of Rockstar Games' usual gameplay, players have the opportunity to be as low-down and dishonorable as they choose to be. As a matter of fact, along with the option to pet every animal you see in the sprawling open world, players can choose to shoot every animal. This action, rightly so, decreases Arthur's honor. If a gamer wants to make Arthur Morgan the worst person on the planet, all they need to do is act like a monster and shoot all friendly domesticated animals. Be warned though. Animal cruelty is a crime, and the law will be on you faster than a guilty conscience.
2 Go For The Money Instead Of Helping John
The last choice Arthur Morgan can make is to help John Marston get to safety and his family or to go back for the gang's money. Helping John is clearly the best way to end Arthur's story as it neatly ties into the first Red Dead Redemption. However, if a player wants to make the worst choice, they can return to the gang's loot pile to try and get some money. Not only is abandoning John antithetical to Arthur's previous ideology of loyalty, it also makes no sense since Arthur is shortly to die of tuberculosis and won't be able to use the gang's loot stash.
1 Be An All-Around Jerk
Since Red Dead Redemption 2 is a vibrant and living open-world game, there are countless mini-opportunities for Arthur Morgan to be a bad person. If a player so chooses, they can start a shoot-out in every town, eliminate every NPC they find on the road, and be a jerk to anybody who asks Arthur for help. Red Dead Redemption 2 is such an impressive game when it comes to player choice, that the chances for a player to be bad are almost infinite. Outside of the game's story, Arthur can do some pretty terrible things to place his honor down into the red, including a murder spree

If you want to spare him, youll get his eternal gratitude. On the more tangible side, youll get some honor points and the man will give you a pen. You can sell the gift off for a quick profit, but it might be worth hanging onto.
Theres no telling whether you could use it later on, maybe to prove to somebody that youre the one who saved the man from Blackwater. It might actually be more valuable than it looks, so if youre going this route, you may want to think about holding onto it. It probably wont make a difference in the end, but playing the bad guy doesnt really pay in RDR2.

Red Dead Redemption: Everything You Need To Know About West Elizabeth
There are many reasons why players love Red Dead Redemption 2. From the masterfully written redemption story of Arthur Morgan, the open-world crafted with attention to every little detail, all the way to the lush and realistic wildlife that populates the game's wilderness and lives its own life according to the specific rules of its ecosystem. RDR2's regions are what make Rockstar's Wild West so varied and worthy of exploration.

West Elizabeth, where places like Blackwater, Beecher's Hope, and Strawberry are located, is one of those regions. As opposed to the swampland of Leymone, or the unforgiving winter climate of the Grizzlies, West Elizabeth is mostly green, with beautifully realized forests, and grasslands, but also a complex and interesting history.
9 It's One Of The Most Modern & Industrialized Areas In The West
Although at the beginning of the game West Elizabeth is not as "civilized" and well-developed as Leymone and the city of Saint-Denis, it did show promise of future industrialization and modernization, even back in
As the story of Red Dead Redemption 2 moved forward, and players found themselves exploring the game's world eight years later, in Unlocking access to Blackwater will reveal that the town has paved roads, uniformed police, and is well on its way to becoming the bustling port town known from the first game.
8 Blackwater Is The State Capital Of West Elizabeth
West Elizabeth is one of the only two states in the entire Red Dead franchise to have a confirmed state capital. The other one is, of course, Leymone, with Saint-Denis. This may not seem as important from the modern perspective, but back in the days of the dying Wild West, it was kind of a big deal.
RELATED: 10 Continuity Errors & Dropped Storylines In Red Dead Redemption 2
This is because state capitals and things like a uniformed police force symbolized the relentless march of the government's influence on the "free" territories, something that Dutch's gang and many other characters inRDR deeply feared and resented.
7 The Great Plains Is Based On The Real-Life Central US
Probably one of the most empty regions in the entire game (albeit still with quite a lot of secrets and things to do), the Great Plains is actually based on the real-life Great Plains, located in the central United States.
Just like their video game counterpart, the Great Plains is, well, quite plain. One significant difference is the fact that the real-life Great Plains is much bigger than those found in the game, as it stretches from Texas all the way to Western Canada.
6 Players Are Locked Out Of Parts Of West Elizabeth
West Elizabeth plays a crucial role in the plots of both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. In the first game, it is the first state the players see as John Marston embarks upon his journey, but they are locked out of it right until the final parts of the story.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, on the other hand, Arthur Morgan and the rest of Dutch's gang are allowed to roam West Elizabeth, but can't enter Blackwater under any circumstances, as they are wanted dead or alive there for a ferry robbery gone awry.
5 There Is No Gunsmith Or Fence
Players will not find any establishment that will allow them to buy or sell guns in West Elizabeth. The same thing goes for fences, who buy up just about anything that outlaws may have in their inventory, and also sell contraband items.
RELATED: 10 Weirdest Encounters In The Red Dead Redemption Series
This may not carry too much meaning at all, but some fans theorize that the lack of gunsmith and fences is actually a commentary on how the West Elizabeth authorities are transforming the region into a government-controlled territory that limits its citizens' freedoms one step at a time.
4 It Has Three Trapper Locations
The Trapper is one of the many minor characters found in Red Dead Redemption 2. He will buy pelts, furs, meat, and all sorts of other animal-derived produce. He will also sell unique items that the players obtain by completing various hunting challenges in the game.
West Elizabeth has three locations where the Trapper can be found: Riggs Station, west of the Black Bone Forest, and the Tall Trees, just west of Bear Claw. No other state in the game has this many Trapper locations.
3 Big Valley Is Based On Yosemite Valley
The Big Valley from RDR2 is one of the most beautiful places the players can travel through in the game. With magnificent natural rock formations, lush plant life, and a wide variety of animals, it feels almost like traversing across a national park.
This is because it is based on an actual national park – Yosemite. All of Big Valley's environmental beauty is directly inspired by the Yosemite Valley in California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
2 Strawberry Is A Real Settlement
As opposed to the majority of towns and settlements in Rockstar's titles, which are based upon real-life locations but with changed names and landmarks, Strawberry is actually a real settlement that existed in the 19th century. It can still be found on the map of the United States today.
RELATED: 10 Open-World Games To Play If You Loved Red Dead
In fact, there are quite a few towns that go by that name in America, but the one that RDR2's Strawberry is likely based on is located in El Dorado County, California. It served as a resort in the second half of the 19th century.
1 West Elizabeth Is The Smallest Of Red Dead Redemption'sTerritories
Compared to New Hanover and Leymone, West Elizabeth is actually quite a small state, although that doesn't mean that there is nothing to do there. In fact, it is packed with various activities and side missions, not to mention its relevance to the main plot of the game.
Square mileage-wise, it is the smallest state in Red Dead Redemption 2, but West Elizabeth more than makes up for it by its verticality, with Mount Shann and Big Valley heights being open to exploration.

As with all of these race challenges get yourself a fast horse breed. Don't waste time with war horses that might be slow, you want something with a bit of zip. You are also going to need stamina and ideally, this challenge is attempted with a horse you have a strong bond with for best results.
Feed the horse first and make sure all the cores are full. Have some extra food on you in case you need to refuel on the way as well and make sure they're clean for your top speed.
The hardest part about this run is that you can touch water, so starting from the signpost in Van Horn, head west along the road. This is so you can cross the river in between the E and the R on your map.
Stick now stick to the path all the way to Emerald Station (it may be worth setting a waypoint at now to show you the way). Once you're at Emerald station we're going to change to using train tracks for this portion of the journey.
It may seem counter-intuitive but follow the track north for a bit - you want to follow it to Valentine and then down to Riggs Station.
Here we transfer back to the path and ride south so we can cross this river safely, then head further out west and out past Strawberry to cross at Owanjila Damn.
From here you can set your waypoint on BlackWater and ride it on in but if you still have a high bounty you could easily run into bandit trouble so be careful.
