Siberian Cats of Svetdanhaus

During the 1980’s, along the river Neva, just south of Saint Petersburg, Russia, the non native Siamese cat breed was imported to Russia and allowed to interbreed with the natural native cat, the Siberian. This is where and how the colorpoint Siberians began. Some cat registries will allow this cross breed too be registered as a Siberian Cat; but other, more prestigious registries such as FiFe, The International Feline Federation, consider these colorpoints to be a subspecies of the Siberian Cat and are registered as “Nevas or Neva Masquerades”. Nevas are not the Traditional Siberian breed and it is important for the reader to understand these differences. Nevas are a combination of Siamese genes and Siberians genes and should be considered as a diluted or crossbred version of the Traditional Siberian Cat. Because of the new pointed color patterns, these cats became interesting and popular. This accidental or intentional cross breeding of the Siberian occurred prior to the full understanding of all the wonderful characteristic of the Natural Traditional Siberian Cats, such as itʼs being hypoallergenic.

I do not understand why breeders would want to experiment with such a perfect gift of Mother Nature that took over 1000 years of refinement, but there its is, man applying eugenics ignorantly. Breeders continuing to promote this cross bred version or Neva Masquerade, do this at the risk of loosing the Traditional Siberian Cat breed forever. The only advantage is to produce a new color pattern not native to the Siberian, but at the risk of genetic dilution. This genetic dilution is by a very high (FEL D1) antigen producing cat. Siamese cats are not hypoallergenic, so why would anyone want to dilute the Natural Siberian genes with those of a Siamese. If you need to provide the most hypoallergenic cat for your family, the Traditional Siberian Cat should be your first choice.

Traditional Siberian Cat breeders are dedicated to preserving the natural Siberian Cat, sometimes referred to as the Siberian Forest Cat, just as Mother Nature intended. This breed does not need to be improved, rather it should be respected, perpetuated, and cherished. The dog like characteristics, desire to please its two legged friend, is astonishing to me. The focus and depth of understanding across species lines (human- Feline) is simply amazing. Some refer to it as telepathic, psychic, or just simply magical. I hope everyone takes the time to research their breed, to open their minds to all the wonders of nature, especially those that we share our homes and lives with. Those that greet us at the door each day with unconditional love, those that wake us in the mornings because they canʼt bare another minute without you, and those that politely remind you its dinner time. They are our best friends, loyal confidents, and the best stress relievers know to man. What is there not to love about a Siberian Cat.

Neva & Siberian – Full List of the Different Colors

The first kittens appeared in a natural way, one could say, even accidentally – a Siamese cat from one of the feline exhibition organizers entered a random union with a Siberian cat. Following such an interesting crossing, a kitten was born, which drew the best qualities of the two breeds of his father and mother:

  1. Powerful exterior, which allowed to bring the race in the category of big domestic cats.
  2. An unusual color is both the beige color of a fur coat and striped curls of different intensity, characteristic of a tiger color of Siberian cats.
  3. Sky blue eye color, characteristic of Siamese representatives.

There are two ‘types’ of Siberian cat, the ‘classic’ and the ‘Neva Masquerade’. Their morphologies are identical but they are distinguished at the level of the fur (colors and patterns) and the color of the eyes (necessarily blue for the neva).

Here is a little overview of the different colors of the Neva Masquerade cat. I hope this will give you a bit more insight into what the Neva Masquerade looks like and the different colors allowed by the breed standard.

FIFe’s official documentation on the Neva Masquerade and Siberian Cat

The fur of neva masquerade cats

The color point has blue eyes and a more marked color at the ends. This color can be brown (seal), red (red), blue (a bluish gray)

What does “tabby” mean?

The color at the ends may be plain or have patterns. The addition of the word “tabby” simply indicates a striped pattern on the dress (fur).

Some females can be tortie, i.e. have red in addition to another color. This red can be so discreet that it cannot be guessed even as for Flanelle.

Silver or smoke

In addition to all these elements, a cat can have the gene silver or smoke. In this case, again, this is more or less visible. The result is silvery reflections that darken or lighten the dress. To be silver, one of the parents must be silver.

A fur that can evolve.

The fur is genetically programmed, but our Siberians are full of surprises. From one year to another, they can manifest more intensely certain characteristics. Flannel, a year old, had a very clear back; the year after, very dark; the year after with red. And the year after? still a very clear back. Others may be more constant.

What color will the kitten be?

At birth, neva masquerade kittens are born white. The fur is drawn gradually. It is difficult to guess even if genetics gives us some leads. The first clues appear on the ears.

Some dresses (fur) evolve more gradually than others. Red Tabby Point kittens stay longer white and the marks can grow stronger over the years! Silver or smoke can be guessed, diminish, strengthen. However, we declare a loof dress but some very discreet characters can go unnoticed as silver or smoke.

Between one and two months, we are fixed on the main characters. We can then distinguish the seal point, the seal tabby, the blue or the red tabby!

What types of errors are unacceptable for the Neva Masquerade breed?

  • Chocolate lilac color.
  • Excessive darkening of the mantle.
  • Disproportionate disproportion of the body.
  • Eyes small and distant.
  • Eyes of different colors (for example, blue and yellow).
  • Ears short and rounded.
  • Care of the eye color on the green or yellow side.

Dresses for the Classical Siberian

In the Siberian we can have all the dresses and patterns. Like all cats, the Siberian born with little color but dark with age, especially during the winter period when the boss takes shape. In the Siberian breeders prefer that there is a good contrast between dark points and points of light.

The eyes can be all colors except the blue reserved only for Siberians Neva Masquerade. The fur is dense and bushy, consisting of 3 layers of lush hair (guard, jar and undercoat). In the summer, this fur falls is becoming much shorter and classic.

The ears, tail, legs and face are more colorful depending on the color, while the body is much brighter. The eyes are always and necessarily blue

All colors are allowed for Neva Masquerade, the primary colors in combination. The coloring can at the same time lead to wild colors, tiger cats, etc.

Note: Following many crossbreeding by some breeders, Siberians with dresses not authorized by the standards appeared: Chocolate, Lila, and Cinnamon.

Let us look at a more detailed description of the Neva Masquerade breed:

  1. The head. The classic representatives of the Neva race have a large trapezoidal head. The standard has a broad rounded front, moving gently towards the back of the nose. Chin wide and powerful, not exceptional. Cheeks are tight.
  2. The earsare of medium size, acute angular shape, widely spaced, and the distance between the two shells is larger than the dimensions of the shells themselves. In the breed, the benefits of getting outside kittens, for example, with brushes on the ears.
  3. The eyeballshave a rounded shape, the eyes are set to a medium width, slightly inclined due to the rounded shape of the upper eyelid. The lower eyelid has a classic rounded shape. The color of the iris is usually sky blue. But this can vary from blue gray to deep blue. There are shades of lavender, blueberry, sapphire. This is due to the genetics of the Siamese progenitor.

The outside of the body of the Neva Masquerade is due to its unusual combination of statistics and muscular strength directly transmitted to Russian and Oriental ancestors. The large bone system, the long legs were presented to them by the Siamese predecessors and they owe their long physique and their good muscular component to the domestic serpents of Siberia.

Directly involved in strengthening the qualities of the breed. The body of the Neva Masquerade can be described with an almost perfect rectangle. Their strong legs are proportionally combined with a perfectly curved spine and maintain a harmoniously distributed load. The legs themselves at the ends may be lighter or darker than the usual coat tone. Between the fingers, as a rule, the hair grows.

  1. The tailis enlarged at the base, and as it grows, it has the same thickness and the tip is usually rounded. It has a soft, generally feather-like shape.
  2. The massof an adult male can reach 7 to 9 kilograms, the females are a little smaller and their average weight is 5 to 6 kilograms.

This is a great resource for understanding how to identify a Siberian Cat

Wool plays almost the main role in the appearance of the breed but, besides its visual characteristics, it also has invaluable practical qualities. The hair of small kittens is little polluted, slightly wet and does not go astray in the mats.

In an adult cat, coat length varies according to the season and climate in which the animals live. Thus, women with four fingers in the south have a shorter wool hair length than their counterparts in the more northern regions. In addition, the length of the hair varies throughout the body: the longest hairs grow shoulder blades and up to the base of the front legs, and the shortest hairs of the muzzle. The structure of the lateral layer is generally a little softer than that of the back and legs.

The variety of Siberian colored dots has an unusually luxurious undercoat in the pants and collar area, which is virtually lost during the offseason molt.

The sebaceous glands of the Neva masquerade cats secrete virtually no secretion, so this cat is considered one of the most hypoallergenic varieties.

Wool color coat

At first glance, the color of the Neva Masquerade may seem “mundane”, given the external characteristics of the progenitors, however, there is a wide variety of color combinations:

  1. The silver color or “seal color”is characterized by shades of beige or gray-beige wool, with easy and progressive maintenance at a smoky or brown tip on the legs.
  2. A red dotis a combination of beige wool on the main body with a transition to a bright red or a fawn on the paws and muzzle.
  3. A bluish point– implies a gradual shift of beige or gray-beige accents to smoky tones.
  4. Tortoise Point– involves a fragmented cocktail of multiple colors and is genetically inherently only to the females of the breed.

Most often, there are Neva masquerades with a hint of silver or a hue of silver to all other shades of wool.

If there are socks or white boots on the legs, there is usually a grain or “asterisk” of the same color on the face.

The Neva Masquerade

Quite distinguished from the traditional Siberian cat is the Neva Masquerade, which is typically all white except for several “points” of black, grey or brown on its paws, face and ears. This type of coloring is referred to as “colorpoint” in the cat world. Its blue eyes are also a distinguishing characteristic as most traditional Siberians have green or yellow eyes.

Where did the Neva Masquerade Come From?

Neva Masquerades were the result of cross breeding between Siamese and Siberians in Russia in the 80s. Their name comes from the fact that they were bred along the Neva river near St. Petersburg, which was where a lot of masquerade parties took place. The black/grey coloring on the Neva Masquerade’s face resembles the mask worn by attendees of masquerade parties (think of The Phantom of the Opera).

Some sources claim other breeds such as Birman, Himalayan and Balinese were bred into the Neva Masquerade as well, but that remains unclear.

The Beauty of the Neva Masquerade

Indeed the Neva Masquerade is a gorgeous cat, and some breeders will exclusively breed this cat due to the high demand for its unique appearance. Perhaps the initial crossbreeding with Siamese by the Russians held this same intention; to capture the fine coat and physique of the Siberian and the blue eyes and colorpoint of the Siamese.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev owned a well-known Neva Masquerade named Dorofei, who was crowned the title of “First Pet” in 2008.

Neva Masquerades have even been given as diplomatic gifts by Russian officials. Vladamir Putin was reported gifting one to a Japanese governor, and Dmitry Medvedev giving one to the former Finnish President.

Unique in Appearance

Although the Neva Masquerade shares most of the characteristics of a traditional Siberian (including physique and personality), they have a few distinct attributes that make them special.

They lack the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for production of the pigment melanin, resulting in their white body.

While some have black, grey or brown paws as part of their colorpoint, others may have white paws in spite of their dark face and ears.

Controversy About the Breed

Because Neva Masquerades are a cross-breed there is some dissension as to whether they are true Siberian cats or their own breed. Some of the largest cat shows present them as a color variety of Siberians, while other organizations claim they’re a separate breed and even a threat to the purity of the Siberian breed.

This argument stems from the fact that colorpoint is not present in the oldest and purest Siberian lines, which were free from human manipulation and observed in wild Siberians just a few decades ago.

Are Neva Masquerades Bred with Traditional Siberians?

Some breeders insist on only mating Neva Masquerades together to retain their distinguishing colorpoint, while others will breed one with a traditional Siberian to create more unique patterning and coloring.

Are They Still Hypoallergenic?

In short, yes. Siberians as a whole will differ in their Fel-d1 levels (the protein that’s responsible for allergies in humans), and the Neva Masquerade is no exception. While it’s logical to think that the breed would have higher allergens due to being a crossbreed, this isn’t always the case. Some Neva Masquerades that have been tested have shown extremely low levels of Fel-d1, while other have shown high levels. Again, it depends on the cat.

Types of Coloring

  • Seal Point & Seal Lynx Point: A cream/white body with dark brown or black points and can have white paws.
  • Silver Blue Lynx Point: Off-white/white body with blueish/grey points with stripes and can have white paws.
  • Blue Point & Blue Lynx Point: Cream body with blueish/grey points and can have white paws.
  • Seal Tabby Golden Shaded: Cream/apricot body with beige/brown points.

Kittens colorpoint siberian

Welcome to Kriska Siberians, a small TICA registered home cattery located in Northeast Ohio. Beautiful blue-eyed colorpoint Siberian cats and gorgeous traditional Siberians with long and soft flowing coats are our specialty. We breed for show/breeder quality kittens that are also ideal loving family pets. Our champion Russian pedigreed Siberians freely roam our house with our young children, and our Labrador Retrievers. They follow us all over from breakfast in the morning to putting the kids to bed at night. They seem to actually prefer the company of children, enjoy teasing the dogs, and constantly look for ways to get affection.

Hypoallergenic Fur

Siberians are one of a few select breeds of cat that are considered  hypoallergenic. It is theorized that Siberians have genetically lower levels than other cats of a protein called Fel d1 in their saliva that many humans are allergic to. For this reason, these cats are becoming especially popular with allergy sufferers. Please visit our Links page for further information on cats and allergies. Since some Siberians may not be hypoallergenic, you should always visit with a potential kitten or test hair samples from the parents before purchasing.

About the Breed

The Siberian breed is the native forest cat of Russia. Their medium length triple coat of fur, complete with a dense undercoat, helped them survive and thrive through the harsh winters in northern Russia. Siberians are a medium to large sized cat with round faces and powerful bodies. The colorpoint variety is thought to have originated near the Neva River in St. Petersburg, possibly from intermixing with other pointed breeds such as the Himalayan or Siamese. They were named the Neva Masquerade after the gorgeous points on their faces and limbs. Colorpoints are still somewhat rare in the United States.
